Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1870s to the 1960s, circuses crisscrossed the nation providing entertainment. A unique workforce of human and animal laborers from around the world put on the show. They also formed the backbone of a tented entertainment industry that raised new questions about what constituted work and who counted as a worker. Andrea Ringer examines the industry-wide circus world--the collection of shows that traveled by rail, wagon, steamboat, and car--and the traditional and nontraditional laborers who created it. Performers and their onstage labor played an integral part in the popularity of the circus. But behind the scenes, other laborers performed the endless menial tasks that kept the show on the road. Circus operators regulated employee behavior both inside and outside the tent even as the employees themselves blurred the line between leisure and labor until, in all parts of the show, the workers could not escape their work. Illuminating and vivid, Circus World delves into the gender, class, and even species concerns within an extinct way of life.

Many skills have been passed down from penguin to penguin. However, Poppy soon decides that performing in the family circus is not for her, as she prefers to feel calm and in control. But the hardest thing is not juggling, or riding a unicycle--it's telling her mum that she doesn't want to perform any more. Her bravery is worth it when Poppy discovers a better role--organizing and coordinating the whole show. And what a show it turns out to be! This tale of overcoming shyness and lack of confidence is both a funny and sensitive parody of the record-breaking movie The Greatest Showman, and a celebration of girl power!

Book excerpt: Maps and Mapping in Children’s Literature is the first comprehensive study that investigates the representation of maps in children’s books as well as the impact of mapping on the depiction of landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes in children’s literature. The chapters in this volume pursue a comparative approach as they represent a wide spectrum of diverse genres and national children’s literatures by examining a wealth of children’s books from Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the USA. The theoretical and methodological approaches range from literary studies, developmental psychology, maps and geography literacy, ecocriticism, historical contextualization with both new historicist and political-historical leanings, and intermediality to materialist cartographies, cultural studies, island studies, and genre studies. By this, this volume aims at embedding children’s literature in a broader field of literary and cultural studies, thus situating children’s literature research within a general context of literary theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many readers of this book may feel at a loss to feel the real people and how they felt. That is the purpose of telling it the way it was. No fakery, no embellishments, just the raw straight-from-the-hip truth. This is not fiction, this is fact. No deep seated love or caring, except for my grandmas and the Shermans, (may their goodness last for eternity) no affection, no deep looking into their souls for a little lost child nothing. These foster parents were paid and it was a job, just like any other job, thats all it was for them. I have no love or hate for these people, it was something that just happened. Nothing can change the past, it is long gone, one can only look back at it and try to remember the good times, and forget sorrowful and hurting times. This manuscript was submitted to a literary agent who liked it. There was just one problem, she wanted to change it, give it more impact, more pizzazz, make it stand out even if it meant putting in fiction. I didnt and wouldnt go for that. If I wanted this manuscript to be fiction with all its embellishments, Id write it as such.. what you will be reading is my life through my eyes as a child, with all its warts, cuts, bruises and ugliness. Its not perfect, its life.

Book excerpt: "Incorrigibles and Innocents: Constructions of Childhood and Citizenship in Progressive Era Comic Strips addresses this gap in scholarship, serving as the first sustained examination of the ways childhood was depicted and theorized in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century comic strips. By drawing from and building on histories and theories of childhood, comics and Progressive Era conceptualizations of citizenship and nationhood, Lara Saguisag demonstrates that child characters in comic strips reinforced and complicated notions of who could claim membership in a modernizing, expanding nation"--
