Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Train the Speaking Voice It is not the author's desire to under value the literature Of the subject, but rather, acknowledging to the full its un doubted excellence, to endeavour to sup plement it by attempting to meet a demand which has been repeatedly made to him for a work which would be at once brief, com prehensive, and practical - a work which would rigorously omit what might prove burdensome or bewildering to the average reader; while, at the same time, it should give, in a simple and readable way, practical. This book offers a method of voice training which is the result of a deliberate effort to simplify and condense, for general use, the principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Speak: Exercises in Voice Culture and Articulation Most of the excellent books on Voice Culture which have been published deal with the subject from the viewpoint of the singer. Our aim is to improve the speaking voice; therefore the emphasis is put on that side of the matter. In all the discussions and exercises relating to articulation work, the necessity for the right mental attitude of the speaker toward his audience has been stressed. The obligation to make himself heard, and a real sympathy with the audience, should be felt by everyone, whether he is speaking hi a large hall, a schoolroom or a drawing-room; and the majority of teachers recognize the importance of combining this feeling of responsibility with the mechanical drills. The foundation for the work outlined here is built, mainly, upon the technical courses at Emerson College of Oratory in Boston; and the writers experience in platform reading and teaching in grade work, as well as in teachers college classes, has proved the value of the practice involved. This book has been written in response to the request of many teachers in the public schools for a definite outline of work to develop the correct use of the voice and distinct articulation. It shows the logical order of the drills used every day in the Public Speaking classroom at the Rhode Island College of Education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Speaking Voice: A Collection of Vocal Exercises There is much discussion as to the relative merits of technical and expressional exercises for vocal development. It is only the extremist that decrys either form of exercise; as both are essential, - the expressional generally accompanying and always supplementing the technical. Part I of this book is devoted strictly to technical exercises, Part III to expressional exercises, while both forms are included among the Exercises of Precision in Part II. The exercises of one part of this book should never be used exclusively; but exercises from all parts of the book should be used simultaneously, No attempt is made herein at an exhaustive treatise of the Speaking Voice or a theoretical discussion of Vocal Problems, - such treatment must be deferred for a later volume. The author herein presents a series of practical exercises which he has found, through a teaching experience of many years, to be helpful and developing. This volume is planned for use in the class-room, the private studio, and by the individual as a means of self-culture. The author wishes to gratefully acknowledge permission from J. B. Lippineott Company to print excerpts from the poem by T. B. Reed entitled "Drifting." Poems by H. W. Longfellow and 0. W. Holmes are also used by permission of, and special arrangement with, Houghton Mifflin Company, the authorized publishers. By special permission, several of the exercises of this volume are taken from Clara Kathleen Rogers' excellent book entitled "English Diction." Dr. Frederick Martin, director of Speech Improvement in New York City Schools, has also kindly granted the use of several exercises found in his "Manual of Speech Training." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of the Speaking Voice The Cultivation of the Speaking Voice IS the subject of two articles which, under that title, appeared in 77 Contemporary Review for March and July, 1869. It was suggested to the writer that, with some alterations and additions - especially more precise directions for carrying his theories into practice - they would form a Manual likely to be useful to many, and not unfit for admission into the Art Series of 27149 Clarendon Press. By the kind permission of Messrs. Strahan, these articles have become a book, which is now laid before the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Diction, Vol. 1: The Voice in Speech, a Practical System for the Improvement of Defective Voices, and the Attainment of Perfect Diction in Both Speech and Song My first book on this subject, entitled "English Diction in Song and Speech," published in 1912, was written originally for my classes in the New England Conservatory of Music, and, therefore, the greater proportion of illustrations and exercises contained therein are vocal. Since then I have found it advisable to deal with the two subjects of the speaking voice and the singing voice separately, as, in schools, the study of diction relates to speech only, and usually stops there. For the convenience, therefore, of Primary, Normal, and other Schools, I am offering in the present book a complete course of training for the speaking voice in a compact form, - based on the same principles as given in my first book, but developed more fully. Another reason for making a study of the language itself apart from singing is that the average student knows so little, at the start, of the correct sound of vowels, - of the right actions of the different articulation, - or of the need of flexibility of the speech organs, that only very slow progress in the training of the singing voice is possible in consequence of this lack of a proper foundation to build on. The present book, therefore, is intended also as a basic training for singers, to antedate that of my original textbook, "English Diction in Song and Speech." Let me add, that all that is theory, argument, and exposition of principles in this treatise on the speaking voice is addressed particularly to teachers and advanced students and not to the young people in Primary Schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Speak: Exercises in Voice Culture and Articulation Because the low tones are less conspicuous than the high ones, the public tolerates a quality in the speaker's voice that they could not endure in a singer's; but unpleasant voices in the school and in the home wear upon the nerves of listeners, whether they are aware of it or not. Many mothers and teachers who wonder at the restlessness of children near the close of the day might find the explana tion in the quality of their own voices. Foreigners often remark upon this, criticizing the American voice as high-pitched and rasping, nasal and etri dent, croaking and thick.
