Book excerpt: 'Buying a Horse' is an essay sharing several anecdotes on buying horses by William Dean Howells. He begins by saying that if one has enough money, there seems no reason why one should not go and buy such a horse as he wants. A friend of his proceeded to do so: He was about removing from Charlesbridge, where he had lived many happy years without a horse, farther into the country, where there were charming drives and inconvenient distances, and where a horse would be very desirable, if not quite necessary. But as a horse seemed at first an extravagant if not sinful desire, he began by talking vaguely round, and rather hinting than declaring that he thought somewhat of buying. The professor to whom he first intimated his purpose flung himself from his horse's back to the grassy border of the sidewalk where my friend stood, and said he would give him a few points. "In the first place don't buy a horse that shows much daylight under him, unless you buy a horse-doctor with him; get a short-legged horse; and he ought to be short and thick in the barrel,"—or words to that effect. "Don't get a horse with a narrow forehead: there are horse-fools as well as the other kind, and you want a horse with room for brains. And look out that he's all right forward."

Public sales are conducted by auctioneers and dealers; private sales by private owners and dealers. Sales, whether public or private, are usually followed as soon as possible by a transference of the horse to the buyer, who is allowed two days in which to give the horse fair examination and trial, at the end of which time, if the horse is not returned the sale is considered complete. Two days is the rule most strictly abided by, but under certain conditions this may be extended to ten days or even two weeks. Letters or evidence bearing upon a contract may complete it in law so that when horses are bought by correspondence the letters and documents act as a part of the contract. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Hay and grain have always been so abundant in America that every farmer could afford to keep at least one horse, however small his holding. The business of all except the older great cities is still largely carried on by men who were reared on the farm and who love the horse. This fact, coupled with cheap maintenance and abundant traffic, has-filled the cities as well as the country districts with horses. Unfortunately, until the twelfth Census was taken, we have had no means of knowing the exact number. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Race Horse: How to Buy, Train, and Run Him As to the knowledge requisite, the apprenticeship which qualifies an uneducated lad to undertake, at a later period, the charge of a racing stable, would, of course, qualify one superior to him in this respect for the same task. This is an ordeal to which few gentle men will submit. In place thereof they can learn the art of training from observation, from experience, and from oral or written instruction. The last I have in the ensuing pages endeavoured, and, I h0pe, with some suc cess, to impart, success which I believe will attend the efforts of those who deem this little work worthy of their perusal and attention, and who intelligently inter pret the precepts and practice therein enjoined. These have been derived from actual experience of training in New Zealand, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, and from observa tion of the methods employed by the best and the worst trainers, and the success or failure attending their efforts, as well as from the Opinion of those whose reputation is deservedly high, and therefore worthy of consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Book of the Horse The Arab, it may not be generally known, has stood still in his own country through out the long period of time during which anything definite has been known about him. He has undoubtedly the same elegant outline, the same beautiful appearance, and the same wonderful stamina for which he has always been noted. But in his native state he is no bigger or heavier than he was when he was first introduced into this country some thing like 300 years ago, and this is probably due to the fact that he is bred in countries which do not possess such land as is to be found in many parts of the United Kingdom. It may be urged that the Arab in his own country does not require the luxuriant grasses upon which English horses are reared, and to some extent that is true; but it may be pointed out that when Arabs, Barbs, and other Eastern sires were brought to this country with a view to improving our native breed, the size quickly increased, even in horses whose blood was almost entirely Eastern. The fact is that England, Ireland, and even parts of Scotland, are eminently suitable for horse - breeding, as are the blue grass plains of Ken tucky, the Percheron district of France, certain parts also of the Northern Coast of France, and many districts of Australia and New Zealand. Twelve months ago I made application to Mr. Druce, the Secretary of this Club, to make this address, but was unfortunately too late, all arrangements for 1884 having been then made. Very many causes have been assigned for the decline of horse-breeding. It will be noticed that I accept one more particularly, to wit, the failure in per severing to raise animals of size, quality, and value. The principal Object which I have in View, therefore, is to make our shortcomings in this respect more gene rally known, and to offer suggestions for breeding horses of greater size, as they will always command a ready sale at prices remunerative to the breeder. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic.
