Knowing that each day could, and in all probability, will be his last, the soldier's thought process becomes distorted and his animalistic instincts take over and allow for total abandonment of inhibitions. These soldiers answered the nation's call and they paid the price for the freedoms we as a nation hold dear. They are also the ones who continue to pay the price for the combat experience and that part of us that died in country. These men suffer from PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and this is their story.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the wonderful and exhilarating world of Vietnam! This book is a celebration of the delightful cultures and rich tapestries of life throughout the country, as seen through the eyes and experiences of an acclaimed travel photographer and Vietnam War veteran. Author John Powers begins with a glimpse up north, sharing images from the Lao Cai region, Hanoi, and then on to Ha Long Bay, where numerous ethnic backgrounds converge and there are still pockets that western cultural influences have barely touched. Moving to the central and southern regions of Vietnam, he provides delightful and moving glimpses into the lifestyles and people of Vietnam’s more industrialized and westernized regions. Throughout the engaging images and text, you’ll be treated to a tantalizing glimpse into this often misunderstood part of the world.

Vietnam allows the reader a grunt's-eye-view of the conflict – from the steaming rice paddies and swamps of the Mekong Delta, to the triple-canopy rainforest of the Central Highlands and the forlorn Marine bases that dotted the DMZ. It is the definitive oral history of the Vietnam War told in the uncompromising, no-holds barred language of the soldiers themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Cannot Forget Vietnam is a tale of how difficult it is to forget all that has happened to me. The cost of one year in Vietnam--all that happened is a result of being there. This is my account of how I was affected. Vietnam was a stark difference to being in the USA. I was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Western Florida. Then I received my orders for Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. The difference was, in comparison, like night versus day. Cam Ranh Bay had revetments and sandbags covering anything that may be hit by rockets. The control tower was where I worked half of the time. It stood out like a sore thumb because of its height. This was what I put in for by joining the military. I had to go in the Air Force. Anywhere in Vietnam was more than I expected. Vietnam was a war zone. Anything could happen, including the loss of one's life.

Book excerpt: Through 67 interviews and 59 colour photographs, It's a Living reveals the energy and struggle of the world of work in Vietnam today. A goldfish peddler installing aquariums, a business school graduate selling shoes on the sidewalk, a college student running an extensive multi-level sales network, and a girl doing promotions but intent on moving into management, are just a few of the people profiled. Based on frank and freewheeling interviews conducted by students, the book engages a broad range of Vietnamese, both living in Vietnam and abroad, on their feelings about work, life and getting ahead. By providing a ground-level view of the texture of daily working life in the midst of rapid and unsettling change, the book reveals Vietnam today as a place where ordinary people are leveraging whatever assets they have, not just to survive, but to make a better life for themselves, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author decided over a forty-year period to write about his experiences in South Vietnam with the Fourth Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry. His parents had managed to save every letter he had sent home during that time. What Mike decided to do with the help of his oldest granddaughter, Sierra, was to reproduce the letters in chronological order, with all the grammatical errors, misspellings, and fractured sentences as is. The letters were often written in harsh jungle conditions, under duress with pencil and often wet paper. He felt it would help convey, somewhat, the terrible conditions he and his fellow members of the "herd" were constantly under. Under each reproduced letter, he then wrote of happenings during that time, a diary of sorts. He also concluded he would not spend much time with the blood and guts but devote the majority of the work to the everyday goings-on, both funny and serious! The book begins with time spent in West Germany before moving on to South Vietnam. During the height of the war, more and more paratroopers were needed to fill the ranks of the fallen and discharged, so the Army started a second jump school, the original being at Fort Benning, Georgia, at Weisbaden Airforce Base, West Germany. He was then sent halfway around the world to South Vietnam, and the rest is history!
