Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saguaro, with its great size and characteristic shape—its arms stretching heavenward, its silhouette often resembling a human—has become the emblem of the Sonoran Desert of southwestern Arizona and northwestern Mexico. The largest and tallest cactus in the United States, it is both familiar and an object of fascination and curiosity. This book offers a complete natural history of this enduring and iconic desert plant. Gathering everything from the saguaro’s role in Sonoran Desert ecology to its adaptations to the desert climate and its sacred place in Indigenous culture, this book shares precolonial through current scientific findings. The saguaro is charismatic and readily accessible but also decidedly different from other desert flora. The essays in this book bear witness to our ongoing fascination with the great cactus and the plant’s unusual characteristics, covering the saguaro’s: history of discovery, place in the cactus family, ecology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, and ethnobotany. The Saguaro Cactus offers testimony to the cactus’s prominence as a symbol, the perceptions it inspires, its role in human society, and its importance in desert ecology.

Sunlight Hibernation for Cactus Protecting Your Cactus in the Winter Planting Your Cactus Offsets How to grow Cacti from Cuttings Cactus as Food Diseases and pests Appendix Cactus clubs Author Bio Introduction For all those people who have confronted a prickly pear, at least once in their lives, cacti are boring spiny plants. Also, cactus plants have long been the subject of a superstition that any house, which has cactus growing in it is going to be filled up with strife and trouble and arguments. That is because of the spines of the cactus which are known as spikes promote ill feeling. There is something so odd about a cactus plant that it is often difficult until you grow them yourself to believe that these really belong to the plant kingdom. Historically, how many pioneer explorers of the desert areas in America saw them in the twilight and thought stories of monsters with their arms outstretched, and no heads, who turned into plants in the desert in the morning. No wonder, these giants which can grow up to 63 feet have always been the subject for legends. Even today, most of us are told tales about the cactus, which many of us half believe. Some of us have heard that cacti are poisonous. Other people are going to tell us that cacti flower only once in 100 years, and only when the area is subjected to rain. The first tale is totally and true. The second tale is also untrue because certain species of cacti will flower, almost every year, if given proper cultivation and care. Cactuses, also known as cacti belong to the family Opuntiaceae. Many of these plant varieties have lost true leaves, but they still have fluted and ribbed stems. The stems store water, and many of the desert varieties have very short growing time periods. Their periods of dormancy may be long, because many times, they have to go without water and rainfall for years, especially when they are growing in the Atacama Desert. Cactus originally are natives of the Americas, except for some species, which grow in Africa.

Book excerpt: Part of the regionalist movement that included Grant Wood, Paul Engle, Hamlin Garland, and Jay G. Sigmund, James Hearst helped create what Iowa novelist Ruth Suckow called a poetry of place. A lifelong Iowa farner, Hearst began writing poetry at age nineteen and eventually wrote thirteen books of poems, a novel, short stories, cantatas, and essays, which gained him a devoted following Many of his poems were published in the regionalist periodicals of the time, including the Midland, and by the great regional presses, including Carroll Coleman's Prairie Press. Drawing on his experiences as a farmer, Hearst wrote with a distinct voice of rural life and its joys and conflicts, of his own battles with physical and emotional pain (he was partially paralyzed in a farm accident), and of his own place in the world. His clear eye offered a vision of the midwestern agrarian life that was sympathetic but not sentimental - a people and an art rooted in place.

Book excerpt: Why is God silent in my illness? Living with a chronic illness is tough enough on its own, but it can become an overwhelming burden when we believe widespread myths about chronic illness. Without a strategy to overcome these lies, we can descend into a listless existence, even as people of faith. In Perfectly Abnormal, Chris Morris tears down the erroneous and misinformed beliefs surrounding chronic illness. From the unique standpoint of being both a parent of a special needs daughter and having a seizure disorder himself, Chris guides readers through difficult terrain as he shreds the eight most common myths the chronic illness community faces. Then he begins the conversation of developing a better theology of illness, with the intent of bringing his readers to a place of intentional excellence in spite of their conditions. Advance Praise for Perfectly Abnormal: "I so appreciated Chris Morris' wise theology of suffering and his keen insight into those who don't fit the straightjacket of what society calls normal. An excellent book, well written." -- Mary DeMuth Author of Jesus Every Day: Prayers to Awaken Your Soul "I highly recommend this book to any person or family trying to deal with a chronic illness. In its pages you will find practical help to move forward, and hope to experience a life worth living." -- Marty Kaiser Senior Pastor, Reveal - A Jesus Centered Community
