Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rev. Dr. Christopher Newman Hall LLB (22 May 1816 – 18 February 1902), born at Maidstone and known in later life as a 'Dissenter's Bishop', was one of the most celebrated nineteenth century English Nonconformist divines. He was active in social causes; supporting Abraham Lincoln and abolition of slavery during the American Civil War, the Chartist cause, and arranging for influential Nonconformists to meet Gladstone. Come to Jesus, first published in 1848 also contributed to his becoming a household name throughout Britain, the USA and further afield - by the end of the century the book had been translated into about forty languages and sold four million copies worldwide. Christopher Newman Hall's father was John Vine Hall (1774–1860), proprietor and printer of the Maidstone Journal, and the author of a popular evangelical work called The Sinner's Friend. Christopher's first university degree was a London University BA in theology obtained at Highbury College, Middlesex in 1841. The following year he began his pastoral work at a Congregational chapel, the Albion Chapel, Albion Street, Hull. In 1843 he travelled through Scotland with a companion, where he found himself debating slavery with two American ladies who were slave owners themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penetrating look at human relatedness by one of the field's most innovative thinkers. "When two personalities meet, an emotional storm is created." This provocative quote by renowned psychoanalyst W.R. Bion is the point of departure for Eigen's new work. In the tradition of Martin Buber, Eigen explores the broad spectrum of emotions we experience in our relatedness to others, from feelings of longing, plenitude, and fulfillment to starvation, suffocation, and blind rage. Unlike authors of "easy" self-help books, Eigen embraces the storms of life as a critical aspect of our human bond. For Eigen, the emotional storm is not pathological, but rather integral to our humanity and instrumental to our growth and development. For this reason, he looks critically at our attempts to blunt our emotional response to the world around us. Like Eigen's other work, Emotional Storm weaves case studies, literary references, and psychoanalytic theory into an integrated, complex understanding.

Have you ever had to reassess whether you unequivocally believe the truths you have fervently proclaimed throughout your life? Praise Him Anyway: The Blessing Is the Storm chronicles the whirlwind of emotions we often experience as we face life’s most challenging moments. Reflecting on some of life’s biggest storms, this book offers insight into Stephanie Bernard’s journey towards a greater understanding of the purpose behind life’s difficulties, the lessons we can learn from them, and the power we have through God to overcome. In highlighting the experiences of men and women in the Bible, truths are revealed about the way God uses our trials to move us to a stronger, more lasting faith through a deeper relationship with him. Through examining the ways biblical characters tackle their struggles, we can gain insight into how we should operate when dealing with our own challenges. Praise Him Anyway: The Blessing Is the Storm provides ten lessons learned in the storms to offer comfort, peace, and a declaration of God’s unlimited power to carry us through any circumstance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church is heading into a “perfect storm” of cultural forces. Will you sink beneath the waves, or ride the winds of the Spirit? An array of cultural forces is coming together to present the church with unprecedented challenge and unequaled opportunity. Such “category 5" realities as postmodernism, postChristendom attacks on belief in God, and the threat of global warming have coalesced to make a “perfect storm” that will leave people uncertain of their place in the world, and all they have previously believed in. Like the disciples when Jesus calmed the storm, the church can cower and cry out for relief. Or, when everything is spinning and whirling in the wind, the church can go out to meet the storm, embrace the gale, . . . and pass out kites. From the Circuit Rider review: "Like other books Sweet has written and compiled, The Church of the Perfect Storm is thought-provoking and compelling. The material flows in such a way that allows readers to grasp the gravity of the situation. However, as with most futuristic material, there is also a sense in which readers may want to know: 'Okay, now what? Where do we need to steer this ship? Are mainline and evangelical churches so off-course as to fail to weather the rising tides that are here and soon coming?' Readers of this volume may enjoy the description of a post-Christendom world, but they may also want to know more about the prescription for the days ahead. (Click here to read the entire review.)

Book excerpt: Because of this lack of basic data, theoretical research has been largely restricted to calculations based on unverified postulates concerning the phenomena involved and on attempts to evaluate them by the available empirical data. Although studies of this kind have led to a better understanding of the phenomena, they have not led to the development of any outstandingly successful prediction systems.
