Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of listening to text prior to reading would increase the reading fluency rates of Third Grade students. Subjects listened to their assigned text in small groups prior to reading five days a week for a nine-week period. The text was at an average third grade reading level. Subjects were divided in two groups: the treatment group, which consisted of six Third Grade students and the comparison group, which consisted of four Third Grade students. The treatment group received the reading intervention and the comparison group did not receive the intervention.Subjects were given two reading fluency tests as pre test and posttest. The posttest scores of treatment group were compared to the posttest scores of a comparison group. Bi-monthly running records provided fluency scores as the treatment was being administered. The assessments were triangulated by the sue of an anecdotal log. The results of this study indicated a steady increase in students reading fluency growth during the treatment period.

There were four students who participated in the study. Two were girls and two were boys who were eight or nine years old. Prior to beginning the Read Naturally program, the students were identified after taking the DORF probe and BRI. When using the Read Naturally program, data was gathered in a pre and posttest format. The students would do "cold" readings of the passages. Next students would repeat the readings at least three times and then complete "hot" readings. Both readings were timed for one minute ans the students recorded their scores on a graph. The DORF probe and BRI were given once again to the students after the eight-week period of using the Read Naturally program. All students showed significant gains in their oral fluency rates at the end of the study.

After attending a training session with the researcher at Taylor Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, six third graders and their parents were asked to implement the paired reading strategy at home for at least fifteen minutes four days a week for six weeks during the Fall trimester of the 2007-2008 school year. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Assessment (DIBELS), DIBELS Probes, and the Basic Reading Inventory were used as pretests and posttests. Students and parents were given surveys at the beginning and the end of the treatment period to measure changes in perceptions and attitudes. Findings indicated participation in paired reading at home improved student achievement in reading fluency and various aspects of perception and attitude toward reading in both parents and students.

Data were collected from a random sample of third grade students in 2007-2008 to be compared to a random sample of third grade students in 2008-2009. The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of the core reading program in third grade DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency scores. Students in 2007-2008 were instructed using the Open Court Reading program and students in 2008-2009 were instructed using the Reading Street Reading Program. As required by the ARFI and ARI guidelines, both programs were scientific researched based programs. These programs included explicit and systematic instruction and provided small group interventions for struggling readers. The study evaluated the results of these core reading programs by showing there was not a statistical difference in the oral reading fluency mean scores on the DIBELS assessment in the years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 of third grade students. A t-test was used to compare the means of two independent samples. There was not a statistically significant difference between the oral reading fluency mean scores on DIBELS supported the null hypothesis. Therefore, the researcher concluded that there is no statistical difference in the outcomes of the ORF scores for third grade students who were taught using Open Court Program in 2007-2008 and the third grade students who were taught using the Reading Street program in 2008-2009.
