Book excerpt: A young girl's guide to overcome being bullied through her own experiences. Join Makayla as she narrates her journey and what it is like growing up as a typical high school student but with abnormally large sized feet. Being a teenager isn't always the easiest and Makayla recalls how she navigated through multiple moves, new schools, several hospital stays due to her little sister's serious medical condition and the raging hormones that come with going from a teenage girl to becoming a woman. One might think you can ski through life, especially with the built in skis Makayla was blessed with, but occasionally there are some hills that are just more like a devils plunge than a bunny slope. Throw in a little humor, catty backstabbing high schoolers and a determination to be something more and you have a recipe for one intriguing memoir.

My Drill Sergeant, when I was in the Army, said that it looked like I woke up in a new world everyday. Thats probably when I wouldve started referring to seek out the dictionarys answer at that time. By not having a handle on a reasonable definition to such a simple word is the best indicator of just how turbulent my life was, at that time. One of my earliest memories was the ending of Camelot with the assassination of President Kennedy. I was not aware of how this tragedy would impact the nation and the world, I couldnt even grasp the complexities of how my own life was unfolding around me the way it was. The 60s roller coaster left me starting the 70s in the house of mirrors, with no exit in sight. Ive always been aware that we all have problems that each of us have to deal with, but mine seemed to be strictly unique to me, or maybe it was the way I perceived them. Ive learned (much later in life) that we are all in this together.

Book excerpt: A gorgeously rendered graphic novel of Daniel Alarcón’s story City of Clowns. From the author of The King Is Always Above the People, which was longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction. Oscar “Chino” Uribe is a young Peruvian journalist for a local tabloid paper. After the recent death of his philandering father, he must confront the idea of his father’s other family, and how much of his own identity has been shaped by his father’s murky morals. At the same time, he begins to chronicle the life of street clowns, sad characters who populate the violent and corrupt city streets of Lima, and is drawn into their haunting, fantastical world. This remarkably affecting story by Daniel Alarcón was included in his acclaimed first book, War by Candlelight, and now, in collaboration with artist Sheila Alvarado, it takes on a new, thrilling form. This graphic novel, with its short punches of action and images, its stark contrasts between light and dark, truth and fiction, perfectly corresponds to the tone of Chino’s story. With the city of Lima as a character, and the bold visual language from the story, City of Clowns is moving, menacing, and brilliantly vivid.

Book excerpt: Becky Kueker thought she had it all, publishing a new book, Hiding in My Pajamas, three years ago, and launching a national speaking career traveling the country at 75. What more could you ask coming off a two year low after she retired struggling with the emotional stereotypes that deal with retirement and aging. It was not until a complicated surgery requiring six months in a wheelchair and endless rehab, turned her life in a new direction she could never have expected. Fighting fear, depression and the realization that she would once again have to start over, Becky shares her journey facing a new beginning discovering that it’s laughter that changes everything. Meeting passionate people who inspired her, chapters are filled with poignant stories from women and men who have proven that aging does not have to define you and new beginnings are possible. Their stories are powerful and highlight the determination it takes to live your best life and what the passage of time means to how capable we are of embracing change. Not being financially prepared for retirement has become a national epidemic. Her chapter, Learning to Live After Retirement, features stories from those who were unaware that not planning was just speculating and rolling the dice on what might be. The shock that their savings will not be sufficient to retain the lifestyle they lived before offers a glimpse of a generation not prepared. Interviewing her husband and other men about retirement and aging highlights the unexpected marital turbulence that finds its way into very personal struggles that no one saw coming. “At last!A realistic and insightful book that reveals what really happens when you retire. Filled with humor and honesty this inspirational story is sometimes painful, often funny, always practical and thoroughly captivating.” —Rose Castillo Guilbault, author of Farmworker’s Daughter: Growing up Mexican in America and The Latina’s Guide to Success in the Workplace

Then disaster struck. Unprecedented wildfires swept through the area, killing 102 people. Zoe and Brian fled their villa, chased by the flames, running for their lives. Ultimately Zoe was one of the few survivors from the area, having been miraculously rescued from the boot of a burning car just seconds from death. She suffered severe burns all over her face and body, and her beloved husband Brian lost his life before her eyes. In this remarkable story Zoe reveals the emotional journey of grappling with the loss of her true love and partner, as well as her own incredible fight for survival, learning how to walk, talk and use her limbs again, and a future facing PTSD and a heavily scarred body. As the Smoke Clears is a deeply personal journey through a life-altering year which, at its heart, teaches us to seek hope and happiness in even the most tragic of circumstances, and to find comfort in the enduring kindness of our fellow human beings.

She’s half lamia and half shifter and she thought she would never find anyone like herself. That all changed when Prince Gedniah was drawn to her world. He doesn’t have a fully human form, but he and his clan are eerily similar to lamias. A month has passed since the snake-people arrived and now the prince has asked to see her. Brynn is cautious and is aware that he cast a mysterious spell on her when they first met. Despite her trepidation, she agrees to see him. She’s never met anyone like him before and feels irresistibly drawn to him. Gedniah’s people are in trouble and he needs her help to save them. Brynn is torn when she finds out exactly what he wants from her. She’s the only one who can prevent his clan from dying, but agreeing to his plan could cost her more than she’s willing to give up. Mystical Schemes: With so many strong personalities living in one building, tensions are bound to flare up sometimes. When Sydney pushes Crowmon too far, they learn that it’s a very bad idea to mock a god. Their trivial arguments turn nasty and he casts a spell that will result in more than just bruised egos. During one of their missions, the squad faces a target that’s far too strong and well-armored for them to take down. They will need to rely on Alex to raise something strong enough to defeat it. Agent Steel and his wife have temporarily joined the team during this job. As tests go, this one is a doozy. Alex comes face to face with Irene Dawson again and an unexpected ally comes to her aid. Everyone has a breaking point and each new trauma is pushing Alex closer to hers. Seeing her friends finding their mates and being so happy can only add to her growing misery. Twins’ Bond: Nick has always been in his big brother’s shadow and never quite felt like he measured up to Liam. When their little sister comes home traumatized from her latest abduction, Nick takes matters into his own hands. He decides to go on a hunt alone to ensure Alex won’t have to face fear like that again. Liam has always been the dominant twin and the leader of the younger generation of the Shifter Squad. His shoulders are weighed down by the responsibility Agent Steel has given him. Even with all of his skills and training, he can’t always keep his team safe. Sometimes, he feels like a failure and that he’ll never be good enough. Both twins go off alone during their short break from missions, but their vacations are anything but peaceful. They’ll be forced to confront their own issues that neither of them wanted dragged out into the light. It will either break them, or make them strong enough to face the ordeal they sense is coming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austin Miles has been a well-known circus ringmaster for most of his adult life. It was, he found, good preparation for his experiences with PTL and the Assemblies of God churches. Miles is the first ordained Assembly of God minister to leave the movement and write an in-depth book revealing the inner workings of this sect. This is not rumor, not innuendo. It is fact, seen first-hand, and fully described for the first time. Don''t Call Me Brother is not a book written by an outside observer - Austin Miles was an active participant in the evolution of the PTL Club. - Austin Miles was on intimate terms with the entire cast of PTL''s characters and the high-tech world of Christian movers and shakers: Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye Bakker, Pat Robertson, Charles and Frances Hunter, Richard Dortch, John Wesley Fletcher, Christian celebreties such as Pat Boone and Ephram Zimbalist, Jr., and many others. - Austin Miles opened the door on the steam room where Jim Bakker was cavorting - in the nude - with three other men. - Austin Miles was there when televangelism hatched its super-successful fund-raising schemes, and he participated in the staged "financial crisis" telethon, during which millions of dollars poured into the coffers of the PTL Club. - Austin Miles watched the development of Jim Bakker''s violent mood swings and saw the chilling possibility that Jim Bakker could have become another Jim Jones. - Austin Miles was there when Jim Bakker started a fist fight with his producer over the favors of the current Miss America. Austin Miles had fame, wealth, and a wonderful family. But by the time he finally broke free of the fanatic world of the religious right, he had lost everything. Don''t Call Me Brother is his story. A poignant, outrageous, sometimes hilarious drama peopled with colorful real-life characters. Building to a climax with a surprise double-twist ending, this story is tough but fair, a must-read for those who want to know what really happens in the world of America''s media-glitzed charismatic religions.

Book excerpt: From Printz medalist Marcus Sedgwick, a gripping novel about health—our own and our planet’s—and the stigma of illness. Ash boards a Greyhound bus heading to the place where Bly was last seen: Snowflake, Arizona. Six thousand feet up in the wide red desert, Ash meets Mona, her dog, her goat, and her neighbors, and finds stepbrother Bly, too. In their ramshackle homes, the walls lined with tinfoil, almost all the residents of Snowflake are sick. But this isn’t any ordinary sickness: the chemicals and technologies of modern life are poisoning them. They call themselves canaries, living warning signs that humans have pushed the environment too far, except no one seems to be taking their warnings seriously. The healthy “normies” of Snowflake have written them off as a bunch of eccentrics, and when Ash too falls ill, the doctor’s response is “It’s all in your mind.” Snowflake, AZ contemplates illness and health—both our own and our planet’s. As Ash lives through a cycle of illness and recovery and loss, the world beyond is succumbing to its own affliction: a breakdown of civilization only distantly perceived by Ash and the isolated residents of Snowflake, from which there may or may not be a chance for recovery. This provocative novel by one of our most admired storytellers explores the resilience of love and community in the face of crisis.

With no recollection of events and all seeming to have a motive or opportunity to kill the clown, they wonder how things can get any worse until there's a knock on their door and they are interrupted by a concerned neighbour, who happens to be an elderly retired detective walking his ex-cadaver dog. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author David Levithan takes young readers on twisting journey through truth, reality, and fantasy and belief. Aidan disappeared for six days. Six agonizing days of searches and police and questions and constant vigils. Then, just as suddenly as he vanished, Aidan reappears. Where has he been? The story he tells is simply. . . impossible. But it's the story Aidan is sticking to. His brother, Lucas, wants to believe him. But Lucas is aware of what other people, including their parents, are saying: that Aidan is making it all up to disguise the fact that he ran away. When the kids in school hear Aidan's story, they taunt him. But still Aidan clings to his story. And as he becomes more of an outcast, Lucas becomes more and more concerned. Being on Aidan's side would mean believing in the impossible. But how can you believe in the impossible when everything and everybody is telling you not to?
