Download or read book How Enzymes Work written by Haruo Suzuki and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book covered the basic treatment of the enzyme reaction using the overall reaction kinetics and stopped-flow method, the general properties of protein and cofactors, the control of enzyme reaction, and the preparation of enzyme protein. These topics are the basis of enzyme research and thus suitable for the beginner in the field. The second edition presents the cofactors produced via the post-translational modification of the enzyme’s active site. These cofactors expand the function of enzymes and open a new research field. The carbonyl reagent phenylhydrazine and related compounds have been useful in finding some of the newly discovered cofactors and thus have been discussed in this edition. The topic of the control of enzyme activity through the channel of substrates and products in polyfunctional enzymes has also been expanded in this book.

Book Synopsis Enzymes: A Very Short Introduction by : Paul Engel
Download or read book Enzymes: A Very Short Introduction written by Paul Engel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enzymes are the astonishing, tiny molecular machines that make life possible. Each one of these small proteins speeds up a single chemical reaction inside a living organism many millionfold. Working together, teams of enzymes carry out all the processes that collectively we recognise as life, from making DNA to digesting food. This Very Short Introduction explains the why and the how of speeding up these reactions - catalysis - before going on to reveal how we have evolved these catalysts of such extraordinary power and exquisite selectivity. Paul Engel shows how X-ray crystallography has revealed the complex molecular shapes that allow enzymes to function at an extraordinarily sophisticated level. He also examines medical aspects of enzymes, both in the way faulty enzymes cause disease and in the way enzymes can be used for diagnosis and therapy. Finally, he looks at the many varied ways in which individual enzymes, taken out of their biological context, are used nowadays as tools - in washing powders, food production, waste treatment, and chemical synthesis. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Synopsis The Exocrine Pancreas by : Stephen Pandol
Download or read book The Exocrine Pancreas written by Stephen Pandol and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.
Download or read book Enzymes written by J. B. S. Haldane and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1965 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J.B.S. Haldane will be long remembered for his many contributions to man's knowledge of his world and of himself. Some of the most valuable of these contributions are contained in this classic work on the chemistry of enzymes, originally published in 1930. The book sheds new light on research possibilities that have heightened relevance today. In the preface to this edition, written just a few months before his death, the author has pointed out the importance of the modern enzymologist's awareness of what was known about his subject in the recent past. He describes briefly the major advances in enzymology in the last thirty years and has urged continued and intensified research in specific areas. The result is a fascinating historical work by a great scientist with specific relevance for those in the field today.
