That poll, by the way, indicated conclusively that a very large majority of naho members consider the Yearbook a very useful service of the Association. Although they were issued first, the Selected Proceedings of the Sixth Annual Meeting in many respects are a supplement to the Yearbook. In future years the corresponding reports from the Annual Meetings probably will be included in the Yearbook. For various reasons this was not practicable this year. The Selected Proceedings contain the official reports from the eight round tables held at the Annual Meeting, the address of Charles P. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Housing Yearbook 1940 A conservative estimate shows that over two hundred persons not on NAHO's staff contributed to the 1940 Housing Yearbook. Most of them are local officials still performing their responsible duties under considerable pressure and with inadequate staffs. To them go the heartiest thanks of NAHO's officers and staff members and, I am sure, also those of hundreds of NAHO members who see the importance of building up authentic records of the needs, methods, and accomplishments of new enterprises and professions. Several members of NAHO's staff, particularly Edmond H. Hoben, Assistant Director, and Mrs. Alice MacDonald, special editorial assistant, did much more toward the final result than did the Yearbooks nominal editor. Composition and production were again under the capable supervision of the Publications Division of the Public Administration Service, of which Farrell Symons is Chief. The 1940 Yearbook follows very closely the basic outline of last year. Again the special articles have been omitted and the accounts of state and local activity and the directory featured. Even with the wholehearted cooperation of many of our members, which has characterized other NAHO undertakings as well, publishing the Housing Yearbook has been a major undertaking for our relatively limited staff and resources. We are very eager to have, therefore, all comments and criticisms that might enable us to increase the usefulness of these volumes to the Associations members and to others who may consult them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm-Housing Survey: March 1939 If accidental selection operated in connection with the choice of areas to be studied and the enumeration of those areas, it probably tended to limit the sample to farms accessible to urban influence. Condition of structural parts was determined by local people whose standards were those of their own region. The data on conveniences and equipment are positive - things that the farmhouses actually had. The average of farm housing in America is probably not so good as it is shown for the farms included in the survey. How much worse it is we do not know. County and State figures are based on straight sum. Maries. For the divisional and national figures State summaries for all items have been weighted in propor tion to the number of occupied farm dwellings reported in the 1935 Census of Agriculture. Figures for the United States do not include the Middle Atlantic divi sion. That is, the national summary is a summary of weighted State summaries, excluding New Jersey. The sample obtained in New Jersey, which was the only State of the Middle Atlantic division entered by the survey, cannot be considered representative of conditions in the whole division. The index of condition (table 3) is an average of the number of cases reporting good condition for any one of seven structural items, expressed as a percentage of the total number of cases in each geographical unit. The seven items are foundations, exterior walls, roofs, chimneys, doors and windows, interior walls and ceil ings, and floors.
