Book Synopsis Rental Housing by : Ira Gary Peppercorn
Download or read book Rental Housing written by Ira Gary Peppercorn and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion of where people live and how people pay for their housing has undergone a significant shift. Until the mortgage crisis erupted in 2008, the housing policy of most nations focused on increasing home ownership. There had been very little discussion about rental housing, less about social housing, and virtually none about public housing. The mortgage crisis showed the challenges inherent in pushing for home ownership for all. With homes going into foreclosure and with credit tightening in many countries, the need for rental housing increased dramatically. However, most countries are only beginning to consider supporting rental housing as a shelter option. This book is an effort to bring rental housing to the forefront of the housing agenda and to provide general guidance to policy makers. The information it provides can assist key players in housing markets--government officials, private rental property owners, financiers, and nongovernmental organizations--in including rental housing as a critical housing option and in having an informed discussion on how best to stimulate this sector.
Book Synopsis WHO Housing and Health Guidelines by :
Download or read book WHO Housing and Health Guidelines written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, and help mitigate climate change. Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

Book excerpt: For eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an audience with a gypsy fortune-teller at the Bishop's Lacey village fete is just a bit of fun. Until the old woman sees (or claims to see) a vision of Flavia's mother, Harriet, who died on a mountain side in Tibet when Flavia was a baby. 'She is trying to come home,' the old woman intones, chilling them both. With only her faithful bicycle, Gladys, and her precocious powers of deduction to help her, Flavia starts down a dark and twisting road to the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of consolidated and up-to-date literature dealing with various aspects of current urban problems and their implications for policy decision making has been acting as a lacuna for a long time. For urgent removal of this lacuna, a comprehensive fund of knowledge and understanding of an inter-disciplinary approach toward urban problems was desired to be developed. The present volume is the consequence of a collective attempt to unfold before the discerning reader thought provoking ideas derived from empirical studies, often breaking new grounds in respect of planning directives and policy guidelines. The contents of the book deal with a broad spectrum of subjects besides attempting in-depth analysis of manifold facets of emerging urban problems to focus attention on the need to adopt comprehensive policy framework in regard to urban land, housing, transportation and balanced urban and regional development with a perspective of tomorrow. It is hoped that this book would provide fresh approach to enable planners and others to effectively diagnose problems, assess their impact and prescribe appropriate solutions. The eminent personalities, contributing to this book, like Dr. Asok Mitra, Mr. Jagmohan, Mr. Sayed S. Shari, Dr. B.D. Nag Chaudhuri, Mr. H.U. Bijlani, Professor Rashmi Mayur, Mr. Alfred De Souza, Dr. P.G. Patankar, Mr. Ardhendu Bhattacharya etc. etc., are well known for their contributions in the field of Urban Planning and Development.

Book Synopsis Housing and Finance in Developing Countries by : Kavita Datta
Download or read book Housing and Finance in Developing Countries written by Kavita Datta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the linkages between formal and informal housing finance drawing upon the lessons of NGO and micro-finance practices. Both public and private formal finance institutions have experienced great difficulty in lending below a middle-income client group, and are often reluctant to lend for the purpose of housing at all. This failure of formal finance to filter down to low-income households, and in particular to women, has led various NGOs and community groups to create and adopt innovative finance programmes, such as informal savings banks and credit rotating schemes. The authors critically assess the impact of theses schemes, and evaluate links between gender, housing and finance.
