Book Synopsis Housing Estates in the Baltic Countries by : Daniel Baldwin Hess
Download or read book Housing Estates in the Baltic Countries written by Daniel Baldwin Hess and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the formation and later socio-spatial trajectories of large housing estates in the Baltic countries—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. It also explores claims that a distinctly “westward-looking orientation” in their design produced housing estates that were superior in design to those produced elsewhere in the Soviet Union (between 1944 and 1991, Estonia was a member republic of the USSR). The first two parts of the book provide contextual material to help readers understand the vision behind housing estates in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. These sections present the background of housing estates in the Baltic Republics as well as challenges and debates concerning their formation, evolution, and present condition and importance. Subsequent parts of the book consist of: demographic analyses of the socioeconomic characteristics and ethnicity of housing estate residents (past and present) in the three Baltic capital cities, case studies of people and places related to housing estates in the Baltic countries, and chapters exploring relevant special topics and themes. This book will be of interest to students, scholars, and advocates interested in understanding the past, present, and future importance of housing estates in the Baltic countries.
Book Synopsis Housing Estates in Europe by : Daniel Baldwin Hess
Download or read book Housing Estates in Europe written by Daniel Baldwin Hess and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the formation and socio-spatial trajectories of large housing estates in Europe. Are these estates clustered or scattered? Which social groups originally had access to residential space in housing estates? What is the size, scale and geography of housing estates, their architectural and built environment composition, services and neighbourhood amenities, and metropolitan connectivity? How do housing estates contribute to the urban mosaic of neighborhoods by ethnic and socio-economic status? What types of policies and planning initiatives have been implemented in order to prevent the social downgrading of housing estates? The collection of chapters in this book addresses these questions from a new perspective previously unexplored in scholarly literature. The social aspects of housing estates are thoroughly investigated (including socio-demographic and economic characteristics of current and past inhabitants; ethnicity and segregation patterns; population dynamics; etc.), and the physical composition of housing estates is described in significant detail (including building materials; building form; architectural and landscape design; built environment characteristics; etc.). This book is timely because the recent global economic crisis and Europe’s immigration crisis demand a thorough investigation of the role large housing estates play in poverty and ethnic concentration. Through case studies of housing estates in 14 European centers, the book also identifies policy measures that have been used to address challenges in housing estates throughout Europe.

Book Synopsis Migration and Transformation: by : Pirkko Pitkänen
Download or read book Migration and Transformation: written by Pirkko Pitkänen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People’s transnational ties and activities are acquiring ever greater importance and topicality in today’s world. The focus of this book lies in the complex and multi-level processes of migrant transnationalism in four transnational spaces: India-UK, Morocco-France and Turkey-Germany and Estonia-Finland. The main question is, how people’s activities across national borders emerge, function, and change, and how are they related to the processes of governance in increasingly complex and interconnected world? The book is based on the findings of a three-year research project TRANS-NET which brough together internationally acknowledged experts from Europe, Asia and Africa. As no single discipline could investigate all the components of the topic in question, the project adopted a multi-disciplinary approach: among the contributors, there are sociologists, policy analysts, political scientists, social and cultural anthropologists, educational scientists, and economists. The chapters show that people’s transnational linkages and migration across national boundaries entail manifold political, economic, social, cultural and educational implications. Although political-social-economic-educational transformations fostered by migrant transnationalism constitute the main topic of the book, the starting assumption is that the large-scale institutional and actor-centred patterns of transformation come about through a constellation of parallel processes.
Book Synopsis Housing Price, Credit, and Output Cycles: How Domestic and External Shocks Impact Lithuania's Credit by : Iacovos Ioannou
Download or read book Housing Price, Credit, and Output Cycles: How Domestic and External Shocks Impact Lithuania's Credit written by Iacovos Ioannou and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithuania’s current credit cycle highlights the strong link between housing prices and credit. We explore this relationship in more detail by analyzing the main features of credit, housing price, and output cycles in Baltic and Nordic countries during1995-2017. We find a high degree of synchronization between Lithuania’s credit and housing price cycles. Panel regressions show a strong correlation between a credit upturn and housing price upturn. Moreover, panel VAR suggests that shocks in housing prices, credit, and output within and outside Lithuania strongly impact Lithuania’s credit.

Download or read book Global Housing Cycles written by Ms.Deniz Igan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing cycles and their impact on the financial system and the macroeconomy have become the center of attention following the global financial crisis. This paper documents the characteristics of housing cycles in a large set of countries, and examines the determinants of house price movements. Empirical analysis shows that house price dynamics are mostly driven by income and demographics but fluctuations in these fundamentals and credit conditions can create deviations from the implied equilibrium path. We conclude with a discussion of the macroeconomic implications of house price corrections.
Download or read book The housing debate written by Stuart Lowe and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of Britain as a fully fledged home-owning society at the end of the 20th century has major implications for how houses are used not just as a home but as an asset. The key debate in this important and timely book is whether social policy and people's homes should be so closely connected, especially when housing markets are so volatile. It will be essential reading for all students and practitioners of housing and those concerned with how social and public policy is being shaped in the 21st century.

Book Synopsis Housing Finance and Real-Estate Booms by : Mr.Eugenio Cerutti
Download or read book Housing Finance and Real-Estate Booms written by Mr.Eugenio Cerutti and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent global crisis highlighted the risks stemming from real estate booms. This has generated a growing literature trying to better understand the sources and the risks associated with housing and credit booms. This paper complements and supplements the previous work by (i) exploiting more disaggregated data on credit allowing us to dissociate between firm-credit and household (and in some cases mortgage) credit, and (ii) by taking into account the characteristics of the mortgage market, including institutional as well as other factors that vary across countries. This detailed cross-country analysis offers new valuable insights.
