Download or read book Foreign policy aspects of the detention of naval personnel by the Islamic Republic of Iran written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-07-22 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines the UK Government's diplomatic handling of the seizure of eight Royal Navy sailors and seven Royal Marines by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Shatt al-Arab waterway in March 2007. Issues discussed include: Iran's objectives and strategy during this incident, the Government's diplomatic strategy, the role of regional states and the United States, the sale of stories by captured personnel to the media, and the value of diplomacy to resolve such incidents. Amongst its findings, the report condemns the treatment of the British personnel by Iranian authorities as unacceptable, particularly the use of public confessions and its refusal to grant consular access to detainees. It broadly supports the Government's dual-track diplomatic approach against Iran but criticises the Government's failure to engage with the appropriate interlocutors within the Iranian regime at a sufficiently early stage. The Committee also finds that the MoD's decision to allow returning detainees to sell their stories to the media displayed a disturbing lack of judgement and calls on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to state in its response to the report who took the decision to give authorisation. Overall, the Committee supports the FCO's overall approach during the crisis, despite some tactical mistakes, and argues that the incident shows the value of diplomacy to resolve a crisis peacefully.

Book Synopsis Legal Accountability and Britain's Wars 2000-2015 by : Peter Rowe
Download or read book Legal Accountability and Britain's Wars 2000-2015 written by Peter Rowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the manner in which Britain’s wars, which took place between 2000 and 2015, have interacted with the relevant principles of international law and English law for the purpose, primarily, of considering legal accountability. During a debate in the House of Lords in 2005 a former Chief of the Defence Staff commented that ‘the Armed Forces are under legal siege.’ The book will discuss the major legal issues which have arisen, ranging from the various votes in Parliament to go to war, the constitutional relationship between ministers and senior commanders, the right under international law to use force, the influence of human rights law, the role of the courts in England (including the coroners’ courts), to the legal regime applying to the conduct of UK military operations. It will assess critically whether the armed forces will now have to accept that operations conducted outside the UK are subject to greater legal scrutiny than previously and whether, if this is the case, it is likely to hinder their future military activities. This book will be of great interest to scholars of international law, the law of armed conflict, military studies and international relations, as well as to those with a professional or other interest in the subject matter.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Aid in Palestine by : Sahar Taghdisi-Rad
Download or read book The Political Economy of Aid in Palestine written by Sahar Taghdisi-Rad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite for many years receiving the highest per capita aid worldwide, the economies of the West Bank and Gaza Strip have failed to achieve any lasting developmental outcomes and suffer from major weaknesses which undermine their very survival. This book argues that the dominant, mainstream approach to the study of aid and aid effectiveness is theoretically and empirically inadequate for a comprehensive understanding and analysis of the workings of aid in developing countries, particularly those undergoing conflict. This book examines the nature of donor operations in Palestine, highlighting the political and ideological determinants of aid allocation and effectiveness, and focussing on the role of trade-related donor assistance in Palestine, more commonly known as Aid for Trade. It discusses how such trade-related assistance is only another instance of donors working ‘around’ the conflict, as opposed to taking it into account; and how aid to Palestine cannot bring about significant improvement as long as the Palestinian economy is fundamentally affected by Israeli occupation, settlements and blockade. It argues that unless restructured and more carefully targeted, aid can only act as a temporary relief mechanism. Furthermore, the book sheds light on critical areas within Palestinian territories that are in need of development and require significant and immediate attention at both national and international level.

Book Synopsis UK-Turkey relations and Turkey's regional role by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee
Download or read book UK-Turkey relations and Turkey's regional role written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concludes that the Government is right to continue to support Turkey's accession to the European Union, as long as Ankara meets the accession criteria, and subject to the Government imposing restrictions on the right to free movement from Turkey after it joins. However, at the moment, shortcomings in Turkey's justice system are leading to human rights abuses, including as regards freedom of expression and the media, and making it harder to advocate Turkey's EU membership. Turkey's EU accession process is in any case stuck: effectively, it is hostage to the Cyprus dispute. The Committee said that, by undermining the force of EU leverage, the stalemate is having consequences that are detrimental to UK objectives in Turkey across a range of fields, including not only human rights but also energy and market access issues. The Committee found this especially regrettable given that Turkish democracy may be in a critical phase, and given the influence that Turkey may have at the moment over reforming Arab states. The Committee also said that, by creating uncertainty over the timing - if not the fact - of Turkey's EU accession, the stalemate was discouraging both the EU and Turkey from starting to address some of the most difficult issues that would be involved in Turkey's EU membership. The Government's continuing support for Turkey's EU membership has provided a strong basis for the further development of UK-Turkey bilateral relations which has significant potential. As a foreign policy partner Turkey could potentially add value to UK foreign policy
Book Synopsis The EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy in Germany and the UK by : Nicholas Wright
Download or read book The EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy in Germany and the UK written by Nicholas Wright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact on member states of long-term foreign policy co-operation through the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Focusing on Germany and the UK, it provides an up-to-date account of how they have navigated and responded to the demands co-operation places on all member states and how their national foreign policies and policy-making processes have changed and adapted as a consequence. As well as exploring in depth the foreign policy traditions and institutions in both states, the book also offers detailed analyses of how they addressed two major policy questions: the Iranian nuclear crisis; and the establishment and development of the European External Action Service. The book’s synthesis of country and case studies seeks to add to our understanding of the nature of inter-state co-operation in the area of foreign and security policy and what it means for the states involved.
Book Synopsis Understanding Influence by : Thomas Waldman
Download or read book Understanding Influence written by Thomas Waldman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching objective of this book is to analyse the manner in which statebuilding-oriented research has and can influence policies in fragile, post-conflict environments. Large-scale, externally-assisted statebuilding is a relatively new and distinct foreign policy domain having risen to the forefront of the international agenda as the negative consequences of state weakness have been repeatedly revealed in the form of entrenched poverty, regional instability and serious threats to international security. Despite the increasing volume of research on statebuilding, the use and uptake of findings by those involved in policymaking remains largely under-examined. As such, the main themes running through the book relate to issues of research influence, use and uptake into policy. It grapples with problems associated with decision-making dynamics, knowledge management and the policy process and draws on concepts and analytical models developed within the public policy and research utilisation literature. This book will be of great interest to researchers, knowledge managers and policymakers working in the fields of post-war reconstruction, statebuilding, fragile states, stabilisation, conflict and development.

Book Synopsis Blair, Labour, and Palestine by : Toby Greene
Download or read book Blair, Labour, and Palestine written by Toby Greene and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of Tony Blair's policy decisions in the Israeli-Palestinian arena were controversial and politically costly. Blair, Labour and Palestine argues that gaps between him and much of his party were rooted in different world views. A positive attitude towards Israel came to be seen as a defining mark of New Labour loyalists. However, contrasting views among left-leaning strands in the party reflected a broader set of ideological rifts. Such differences became increasingly significant in the wake of 9/11 as British policymakers sought to understand and respond to Islamic anger against the West. Based on interviews conducted by the author and on previously unseen documents, this unique case study shows how the distinctive world view of a political leader defined foreign policy, by shaping Britain's response to Islamist violence and its interconnected approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Author Toby Greene also examines the extent to which ministers and officials considered shifting foreign policy in response to fears of Islamist radicalisation in the UK, and Blair's role in stopping this trend, especially after the 7/7 bombings.

Book Synopsis The Iran hostages incident by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee
Download or read book The Iran hostages incident written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 23 March 2007 15 Royal Navy personnel from HMS Cornwall were captured by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard while conducting a boarding operation on a merchant vessel in shallow waters near the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab waterway, between Iraq and Iran. They were taken to Iran, paraded before the international media and detained until their release and return home on 5 April. On their return, the Royal Navy staged a press conference for some of the detainees: two of them subsequently sold their stories to the media. Lt General Sir Rob Fulton was appointed to inquire into the operational circumstances and factors leading to the capture of the Royal Navy personnel. His report was confidential and not published but the Defence Committee was allowed to see it to ensure Parliamentary scrutiny. The Committee reports that Fulton robustly identified serious weaknesses in intelligence, communications, doctrine and training. Whilst there were insufficient grounds for courts martial, formal administrative action has been taken against a number of Service personnel. The Government has made good progress towards implementing Fulton's recommendations. The Committee also considered the findings of the Hall report into media access to Service personnel (available at www.mod.uk). The decision to allow the Service personnel to sell their stories was a serious mistake and deeply damaging to the reputation of the Royal Navy. The Secretary of State for Defence has accepted responsibility and apologised. This should not absolve others from blame.
