Science of Synthesis is designed to be the first point of reference when searching for a synthesis strategy. This volume covers the synthesis of three- and four-membered heterocycles with maximum unsaturation and of five-membered hetarenes with one oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, nitrogen, or phosphorus atom. Maximum unsaturation means that the ring does not contain either an sp3-hybridized carbon atom or a heteroatom incapable of pi-conjugation. Some compounds which are derivatives of such ring systems but no longer feature maximum unsaturation are also included. Book excerpt: For the first time the discipline of modern inorganic chemistry has been systematized according to a plan constructed by a council of editorial advisors and consultants, among them three Nobel laureates (E.O. Fischer, H. Taube and G. Wilkinson). Rather than producing a collection of unrelated review articles, the series creates a framework which reflects the creative potential of this scientific discipline. Thus, it stimulates future development by identifiying areas which are fruitful for further research. The work is indexed in a unique way by a structured system which maximizes its usefulness to the reader. It augments the organization of the work by providing additional routes of access for specific compounds, reactions and other topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tin in Organic Synthesis is a systematic presentation of the organic chemistry of tin. This book discusses the significant advances that have been made with regard to the applications of organotin compounds as reagents or intermediates in organic synthesis and points out directions for future developments. This monograph is comprised of 17 chapters divided into four sections. Following a brief introduction to organotin chemistry, the production of the organotin reagents, which are most usually employed in organic synthesis, is described. Special emphasis is placed on the creation of a fresh tin-carbon bond, a preliminary step in numerous fruitful applications. The following chapters are devoted to synthetic applications involving tin-hydrogen, tin-carbon, and tin-heteroatom bonds. The reduction of organic halides, carbonyl compounds, thio, nitrogen compounds, unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds, and seleno and telluro compounds is considered. The discussion then turns to electrophilic cleavages of tin-carbon bonds, which are of possible interest in organic synthesis, along with transmetallation and metallation of organotin compounds. The creation of new carbon-carbon bonds through substitution, addition, or elimination reactions is also examined. The remaining chapters focus on organotin alkoxides, organotin enolates, organotin oxides and peroxides, and organotin esters. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in the field of organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: The increasing number of publications that use tellurium clearly demonstrates the important role of tellurium compounds as unique and powerful tools in a broad range of organic chemical manipulations, often characterized by their selective behavior. Tellurium in Organic Synthesis provides an overview of the principal aspects of organic tellurium chemistry. Many chapters have been enriched and updated in this second edition. New chapters include overviews of toxicology and pharmacology and a review on the preparation and reactivity of several tellurium heterocycles. The first part of the book focuses on the preparation of selected inorganic tellurium compounds and on the main classes of organotellurium compounds. The second part, and main interest of the book, details the use of these inorganic and organic compounds as reagents to perform specific organic manipulations and synthesis. Reactions covered include reduction, formation and reaction of anionic species, deprotection, tellurium cyclizations, formation of alkenes, use of vinyllic tellurides, free radical chemistry, transmetallations, and removal of tellurium. Overview of inorganic and organic tellurium chemistry Synthetic applications of tellurium compounds All topics accompanied by detailed experimental procedures

During this time a rapidly increasing number of metals have found utility in organic synthesis as the corresponding organometallic compounds. The sub ject of "Organic Synthesis by Means of Transition Metal Complexes" was reviewed in the first volume of this series of monographs. This volume deals primarily with the appli cation of organomercury compounds in organic synthesis (exclusive of solvomercuration-demercuration reactions), but will of necessity involve a number of reactions of other organometallics as well. Organomercurials are among the oldest known organo metallics and were perhaps the first to have an entire book devoted to their chemistry, when Whitmore wrote an American Chemical Society monograph on the subject in 1921. Subsequently, two very detailed monographs on the subject have appeared. In 1967 "The Organic Compounds of Mercury", volume 4 in the series "Methods of Elemento Organic Chemistry" appeared and this was followed in 1974 by Houben Weyl's full volume, Band XIII/2b, devoted entirely to the organometallic compounds of mercury. These books cover the entire field of organomercury chemistry.

Book excerpt: Methods for the Oxidation of Organic Compounds: Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, and Arenes is an account of the different methods used for the controlled oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes. Most of the oxidative techniques considered are illustrated with detailed experimental procedures taken from the literature. The formation of alkenes, alcohols, hydroperoxides, dialkyl peroxides, cyclic peroxides, ethers, and esters as well as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids is described, together with the aromatization of cyclic systems. The following chapters are devoted to alkenes, alkynes, and arenes and focus on the formation of compounds ranging from 1,2-diols and oxiranes (1,2-epoxides) to 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, phenols and their derivatives, and quinones. The formation of dialkynes by oxidative coupling of 1-alkynes is described, along with the oxidative cleavage of arenes and oxidative coupling of phenols. This monograph should be of interest to organic chemists and research students.
