Minnie Upton was a strong-minded black teenager growing up in the inner-city of Memphis Tennessee in 1958. She and eight of her fellow students were among the first to be bused to the all-white school of Bartlett TN, in the suburbs of the city. Minnie finds herself being denigrated, threatened and abused by the unaccepting white culture and is finally threatened physically by some of her fellow students. It is then that Sam Rutherford, a white upper-classman who was an outcast in his own right because of a congenital condition which had caused him to grow and an accelerated rate, decides to step in and become Minnie's protector. It is within this environment of indiscriminate violence and pervasive racism that these two social exiles find unexpected love. The odds are stacked against them but they are up for the challenge because they have finally found something that is worth fighting for.

Hell has come to town. About the Author Gregory A. Fournier received his bachelor and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University. He has taught English language arts for over thirty years in Michigan and Southern California and spent ten years at Cuyamaca College in San Diego County as an adjunct professor. He has written a stage adaptation of Crime and Punishment and is currently working on his next novel, The Water Tower.
