Though basically a love story it takes place at a time in our history that made their love almost impossible and very dangerous. Minnie Upton was a strong-minded black teenager growing up in the inner-city of Memphis Tennessee in 1958. She and eight of her fellow students were among the first to be bused to the all-white school of Bartlett TN, in the suburbs of the city. Minnie finds herself being denigrated, threatened and abused by the unaccepting white culture and is finally threatened physically by some of her fellow students. It is then that Sam Rutherford, a white upper-classman who was an outcast in his own right because of a congenital condition which had caused him to grow and an accelerated rate, decides to step in and become Minnie's protector. It is within this environment of indiscriminate violence and pervasive racism that these two social exiles find unexpected love. The odds are stacked against them but they are up for the challenge because they have finally found something that is worth fighting for.

Book excerpt: Zug Island: A Detroit Riot Novel tells a Huck Finn-meets-heavy-industry tale about a suburban white kid who gets a crash course in race relations. Set in 1967 against a backdrop of industrial blight and urban decay, the book follows Jake Malone and Theo Semple as they stumble in and out of rhythm on Detroit's mean streets to discover that the face of racism comes in every shade of color. After getting kicked out of college, Jake needs to find work in Detroit's frozen rust belt. Armed with a shovel and a keen sense of self-preservation, he enters the dark reaches of Zug Island and must prove his worth, not only to himself but to everyone around him. He is befriended on the job by Theo; their friendship grows until put to the test outside the well-defined boundaries of the coke ovens. There they find that racial discrimination, enshrined behind Detroit's segregated suburban neighborhoods for decades, is alive and well. Then one sweltering, early Sunday morning, an aggressive Detroit police squad puts into motion a raid on a "blind pig" that ignites the heart of the city, setting old hatreds ablaze, leaving much of the town in ruins and suburbia witness to its worst fears. Hell has come to town. About the Author Gregory A. Fournier received his bachelor and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University. He has taught English language arts for over thirty years in Michigan and Southern California and spent ten years at Cuyamaca College in San Diego County as an adjunct professor. He has written a stage adaptation of Crime and Punishment and is currently working on his next novel, The Water Tower.

Book excerpt: Documents the development of the Cambridge ESOL Certificates in English Language Skills (CELS), a suite of modular examinations first offered in 2002. As a context for how CELS was conceived, developed, constructed, validated and managed, the book traces the history of exams which have influenced CELS. The Royal Society of Arts (RSA), later UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate) Communicative Use of English as a Foreign Language examinations (CUEFL) was one such influence, as were the Certificates in Communication Skills in English (CCSE), these exams being a development of the CUEFL. The University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations (UODLE) examinations, taken over by UCLES in 1995, were a further influence on CELS. UODLE itself had worked in partnership with the Association of Recognised Language Schools (ARELS) Examinations Trust, the Oxford EFL reading and writing exams for many years offered in tandem with the ARELS Oral English exams.
