Book excerpt: It was the astronomers and mathematicians of the Islamic world who provided the theories and concepts that paved the way from the geocentric theories of Claudius Ptolemy in the second century AD to the heliocentric breakthroughs of Nicholas Copernicus and Johannes Kepler in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Algebra, the Arabic numeral system, and trigonometry: all these and more originated in the Muslim East and undergirded an increasingly accurate and sophisticated understanding of the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. This nontechnical overview of the Islamic advances in the heavenly sciences allows the general reader to appreciate (for the first time) the absolutely crucial role that Muslim scientists played in the overall development of astronomy and astrology in the Eurasian world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you and your partner always quarreling, for no apparent reason? Could it be that one of you is a Dragon and the other a Dog? If you were looking for a creative person to work for you, would it help to know their birth year? Someone born in the Year of the Monkey would be a strong choice. Were you born in the Year of the Rooster? Maybe it's no surprise that your closest friends are a Horse and a Rabbit. The Chinese Horoscopes Guide to Relationships is a fascinating guide to the secrets of the astrological system that has been practiced in China for years. By identifying the people in your life--business associates, family members, teachers, friends, lovers, and spouses--through their respective signs, you will gain valuable insight into their personalities and aptitudes, their quirks and proclivities. More important, you will discover how your own sign and its traits affect how you get along with others born under different signs. At long last, you will have the astrological explanations as to why you can be so compatible with one person yet so completely at odds with someone else. Theodora Lau was born in Shanghai and lived with her husband and two children in Hong Kong before moving to California, where she is presently settled. She is the author of The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes, now in its third edition.

This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to break new ground, both empirically and conceptually, in examining changing understandings of the physical human body from a variety of anthropological perspectives. In doing so, it interrogates how the body has been and continues to be conceptualised, experienced and interacted with. After an introductory appraisal of recent approaches to understanding the body, the book provides empirically rich accounts from East and Southeast Asia of how cultural, environmental and social norms shape human physicality. The contributions are organised in four broad themes. Part I, ‘Body and Space’, offers two contrasting case studies from Malaysia, both of which examine gender norms associated with marriage and pregnancy, including the taboos associated with these rites of passage. Part II, ‘Imperfect Bodies: Communication and the Body as Media’, analyses two case studies—Deaf people in Japan and masked theatre performance in Bali, Indonesia, to reflect on changing attitudes towards disability, which reflect broader social norms and cultural beliefs about the nature of disability and its place in society. Part III, ‘The Body and Image’, provides a pair of case studies from Singapore, on male fans of the popular manga boys’ love genre and on ways that the Chinese zodiac system is determined from birth and continues to be spiritually embedded in the body of a Chinese individual through ritual practices. Part IV, ‘The Body as Container: Taming the Bodies?’, presents a single case study from Thailand of spirit possession among schoolchildren. Though wide-ranging, all the case studies posit that the body is a site of constant negotiation. The way the body is presented and the way it is seen are shaped by a complex array of social, cultural, political and ideational factors. Anthropology through the Experience of the Physical Body is a valuable interdisciplinary work for advanced students and researchers interested in representations of the body in East and Southeast Asia and for those with wider interests in the field of critical anthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an area of contemporary religion, spirituality and popular culture which has not so far been investigated in depth, the phenomenon of astrology in the modern west. Locating modern astrology historically and sociologically in its religious, New Age and millenarian contexts, Nicholas Campion considers astrology's relation to modernity and draws on extensive fieldwork and interviews with leading modern astrologers to present an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the origins and nature of New Age ideology. This book challenges the notion that astrology is either 'marginal' or a feature of postmodernism. Concluding that astrology is more popular than the usual figures suggest, Campion argues that modern astrology is largely shaped by New Age thought, influenced by the European Millenarian tradition, that it can be seen as an heir to classical Gnosticism and is part of the vernacular religion of the modern west.

This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esoteric Astrology – A New Astrology for a New Millennium Volume One - The Signs, Planets and Houses of the Horoscope This publication takes a new and revitalised look at astrology. It is simple to understand, yet remains a powerful tool, capable of providing a solid foundation for the comprehension of this broad and magnificent subject. This textbook, like most of Dr. Baker’s printed books, eBooks and DVDs, enhances your studies via many charts, lists, tables and images (over 100 in this one). This major work is a very comprehensive introduction for those who want to study this subject in earnest, and for the more advanced student it will serve as an essential reference manual. In today's computer-based world it is no longer necessary to spend hours calculating a horoscope when the most modest PCs can do it in seconds, and with 100% accuracy! Consequently the needless paraphernalia, usually associated with learning astrology, has been stripped away. Emphasis is placed on the application of astrology to the unique problems of the modern world, its use as a method of revealing purpose and meaning in life, and ultimately as a key to the psychosynthesis of personality. The horoscope is described in comprehensive detail, with special attention given to the esoteric ruling planets of the zodiac signs, which are more relevant than orthodox rulers in the charts of spiritually-minded people. The new rulers also accommodate the immense changes in external conditions and inner consciousness that have occurred in the last hundred years and are related to a new range of experience which the brain registers as the externa of the modern world. The significance of karma is represented for it gives dramatic effect to our daily actions, and the third factor of esoteric psychology, lying beyond our understanding of heredity and environment, is given full prominence. This integrative and enriching work can be read alone, as a fascinating introduction and foundation to the New Astrology, or can be followed up with the author's extensive range of astrological books and video tapes, audio lectures and the all-embracing Dictionary of Astrology for the 21st Century. Together they provide a complete system for the professional and novice alike, containing efficient and extraordinary techniques of interpretation which have never been used before and which halve the time required to assimilate and practise astrology.
