His former Colonel had retired, and he was lost and followed suit. Wandering around aimlessly though just got him involved in some stuff he could not handle alone. It had him rethinking that last mission and feeling a need to see his former Colonel again. He never made the meeting he set up with Luke. Getting down from his jeep after a long drive to take a leak in the woods saw him nearly mauled to death by a wild panther, knowing his end had arrived, and finally accepting the dark gift from a vampire because he could not let things end the way they were heading. Finding his former Colonel waiting for him when he was with himself again after the delirium and several days of sleeping left him with a lot of questions. The one he needed to answer as desperately as he needed to understand what it meant to be a vampire was what happened to the panther? That was soon followed by dragons? Really? Okay. Xavier and Alexander, who already possess the magic Hallows from Dream, Ocean, and Sky, are reluctant to gain more Hallows, afraid that they will be the ones to bring the End of Existence. But the brothers can't afford to quit no. For if Macarius beats them to the relics, he will destroy the ones they love. The Shadowblood champions only pray they've made the right choice! Get ready to embark on a fascinating journey with epic adventures, thrilling action, addictive world-building, intricate magic systems, and unpredictable plots. Blossom of Gold is the explosive conclusion to the NecroSeam Chronicles series you won't want to miss! ***** Five Star Review from Readers' Favorite Blossom of Gold is a work of epic fantasy fiction with plenty of action and conceptual delights and was penned by author Ellie Raine. The fifth and final novel in the NecroSeam Chronicles series, this ending to the saga contains some mild profanity and graphic violence, which makes it largely suitable to adult and mature YA readers alike. In this darkly conceptualized world, we are introduced to Reapers and the undead alike - though the undead are mutated demons from whom the seam of life (the titular NecroSeam) has been left uncut. Theundead are about to be unwittingly enslaved to fight a war that could bring about the End of Existence, with twins Xavier and Alexander standing right in their path. Author Ellie Raine has developed a truly superb and fully engrossing fantasy world like nothing I've ever read before. The concept of Grim Reapers and undead demons may not seem new, but through Raine's intelligent revisioning and extensive work in lore and world building, this world filled with dark realms, nature, life, and death is one that is completely realized and totally unique. The action for twin brothers Xavier and Alexander comes thick and fast as the end draws near, and the use of prophecy and magical quests feels apt and authentic, not trope-like or overdone. This makes for a truly compelling adventure novel with dark twists everywhere, and some truly frightening images that stay with you long after reading. Overall, Blossom of Gold is a superb work that is highly recommended for fantasy fans everywhere. Review by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite

The surface realm’s civil war is raging as rumors spread that their lost Relicblood will return. A new war involving the five realms threatens the fragile balance of this world. Even the Demon kingdoms are fighting amongst themselves. And in the middle are twin reapers, destined for something, if only they knew what it was. After six years trapped inside his twin, Xavier’s soul is finally back in his own body, although his long years in a mindless coma has left him extremely weak. Princess Willow is thrilled to have her fiancé back, but her duties as the Dealth realm’s emissary takes precedence, now that the war has intensified. The twins set sail with Willow on a diplomatic mission to the icy mountains of the Ocean realm, continuing on to the Neverland continent, unaware of the trap the new queen has in store for them. During the long voyage, the reapers are joined by the royal heirs of all five realms, including a Relicblood who should not even exist. And it’s the Shadowblood twins they are counting on. For it has been foretold that when the time comes, these dual champions will be powerful protectors of the true Relicbloods. And that time is almost here.

Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The History of Art in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

Book excerpt: The naturalist frequently finds that to learn to identify species is a most difficult task, and yet nothing is more important to his work. He finds that species are not separated merely on shape and colour, but on structural peculiarities which frequently are connected with particular habits. This is especially the case in vertebrate animals, which in Great Britain, with its very limited number of forms, may be identified in a haphazard manner by elimination. This is impossible in a country where different climatic areas interdigitate and where there are many species, as the United States, which for the purpose of the naturalist is a continent. Here Prof. H. S. Pratt ?fills the bill ?by his ?Vertebrate Animals of the United States,? which, however, omits birds. A short account of each group is given, the anatomical features dividing it up into sub-groups and families being usually illustrated. Where neces-sary, special features for families are described and then follow keys to the genera, descriptions of the same and keys to their species. The whole closes with a good bibliography and a glossary of technical terms. The short descriptions of each species, with mention of their geographical distributions and habitats, are excellent, and the tabulation of the sub-species most useful. We learn that there are about 600 species of freshwater fishes, 70 of newts and 61 of frogs and toads we are given a key by which their tadpoles and eggs can be identified-300 reptiles and a wide series of mammals belonging to 9 orders. We characterise this publication as a book for ready reference, such as should be on the shelves of all American naturalists.
