Book excerpt: "We analyze the interrelationships of the several groups of hornless ruminants and show which of them lie nearest the higher ruminants. The phylogenetic progression within Ruminantia proceeds from Hypertragulidae through Tragulidae to Leptomerycidae to Gelocidae to Moschidae and thence to the horned ruminants. Archaeomeryx of the late Eocene is recognized as a primitive member of the Leptomerycidae; the living Tragulidae actually represent a more primitive ruminant stock. We introduce the name Moschina for the Gelocidae and the Moschidae and the term Eupecora for the higher ruminant groups bearing horns, antlers, and ossicones. We also propose Neoselenodontia, above the subordinal level, to include both the Ruminantia and their sister group, the Tylopoda. The stratigraphic records of the five lower ruminant families appear relatively complete with the exception of the Tragulidae, which are poorly known prior to the Miocene. The exclusively North American distribution of the family Hypertragulidae and many of the Tylopoda suggests that the Ruminantia may have originated in North America. The Tragulidae, exclusively Old World and predominantly subtropical, presumably originated by colonization and isolation in the Old World. Thereafter ruminant evolution centered in the Old World, but representatives of every major group reached North America"--P. 121.

Book excerpt: To mark the publication of Stop What You're Doing and Read This!, a collection of essays celebrating reading, Vintage Classics are releasing 12 limited edition themed ebook 'bundles', to tempt readers to discover and rediscover great books. THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES & THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE INTRODUCED BY DARWIN'S GREAT GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER RUTH PADEL When the eminent naturalist Charles Darwin returned from South America on board the H.M.S Beagle in 1836, he brought with him the notes and evidence which would form the basis of his landmark theory of evolution of species by a process of natural selection. This theory, published as The Origin of Species in 1859, is the basis of modern biology and the concept of biodiversity. It also sparked a fierce scientific, religious and philosophical debate which still continues today. THE COMMUNISTY MANIFESTO INTRODUCED BY DAVID AARONOVITCH The Communist Manifesto was first published in London, by two young men in their late twenties, in 1848. Its impact reverberated across the globe and throughout the next century, and it has come to be recognised as one of the most important political texts ever written. Maintaining that the history of all societies is a history of class struggle, the manifesto proclaims that communism is the only route to equality, and is a call to action aimed at the proletariat. It is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand our modern political landscape.

Book excerpt: Regarded by many as the most comprehensive anthology of all time, ‘The Harvard Classics’ was first published in 1909 under the supervision of the Harvard president Charles W. Eliot. An esteemed academic, Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier challenged Eliot to make good on this statement and ‘Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf’ was the result. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’, offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the ‘The Harvard Classics’ comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. This comprehensive eBook presents the complete anthology, with Eliot’s original introductions, numerous illustrations, rare texts and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to life and works of the authors featured in the anthology * All 51 volumes of ‘The Harvard Classics’ * Eliot’s original concise introductions * Eliot’s general introduction to the anthology (Volume 50) * The complete 20 volume edition of ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’ * Images of how the books were first published, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Major works include the original illustrations that accompanied the text * Easily locate the chapters and sections you want to read with individual contents tables * Precise arrangement of texts into the original anthology order * A veritable digital library comprised in a single eBook! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three major works by the father of evolutionary theory encompass his life, journey through the Galapagos, and landmark work on natural selection. On the Origin of Species: In one of the most important contributions to scientific knowledge, Charles Darwin puts forth the theory that species evolve over time through the process of natural selection. Drawn from extensive research performed on various creatures living in the Galápagos Islands, his research suggests that “one species does change into another”—a revolutionary notion that has shaped much of modern biology. The Autobiography of Charles Darwin: Darwin wrote his autobiography as a family document in 1876. When it was originally published posthumously, certain portions were considered too personal or controversial and were removed. This edition restores those passages, shedding light on the women in Darwin’s life and his evolving views on religion. It also includes previously unpublished notes and letters on family matters, as well as Darwin’s dispute with Samuel Butler. The Voyage of the Beagle: From volcanoes in the Galápagos to the coral reefs of Australia, this travelogue documents the young naturalist’s historic, years-long journey at sea. Darwin’s observations of the people, places, and events he experienced make for compelling reading and offer a fascinating window into the intellectual development of his ideas about natural selection.

Book excerpt: Easily the most influential book published in the nineteenth century, Darwin’s The Origin of Species is also that most unusual phenomenon, an altogether readable discussion of a scientific subject. On its appearance in 1859 it was immediately recognized by enthusiasts and detractors alike as a work of the greatest importance: its revolutionary theory of evolution by means of natural selection provoked a furious reaction that continues to this day. The Origin of Species is here published together with Darwin’s earlier Voyage of the ‘Beagle.’ This 1839 account of the journeys to South America and the Pacific islands that first put Darwin on the track of his remarkable theories derives an added charm from his vivid description of his travels in exotic places and his eye for the piquant detail.
