Book excerpt: In her book, The Closed Hand: Images of the Japanese in Modern Peruvian Literature, Rebecca Riger Tsurumi captures the remarkable story behind the changing human landscape in Peru at the end of the nineteenth century when Japanese immigrants established what would become the second largest Japanese community in South America. She analyzes how non-Japanese Peruvian narrators unlock the unspoken attitudes and beliefs about the Japanese held by mainstream Peruvian society, as reflected in works written between 1966 and 2006. Tsurumi explores how these Peruvian literary giants, including Mario Vargas Llosa, Miguel Gutiérrez, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Carmen Ollé, Pilar Dughi, and Mario Bellatin, invented Japanese characters whose cultural differences fascinated and confounded their creators. She compares the outsider views of these Peruvian narrators with the insider perceptions of two Japanese Peruvian poets, José Watanabe and Doris Moromisato, who tap personal experiences and memories to create images that define their identities. The book begins with a brief sociohistorical overview of Japan and Peru, describing the conditions in both nations that resulted in Japanese immigration to Peru and concluding in contemporary times. Tsurumi traces the evolution of the terms "Orient" and "Japanese/Oriental" and the depiction of Asians in Modernista poetry and in later works by Octavio Paz and Jorge Luis Borges. She analyzes the images of the Japanese portrayed in individual works of modern Peruvian narrative, comparing them with those created in Japanese Peruvian poetry. The book concludes with an appendix containing excerpts from Tsurumi's interviews and correspondence in Spanish with writers and poets in Lima and Mexico City.

Hence, the book is structured into two parts, dedicated, respectively, to the creative categories of origin and the creative categories of originary. Within the former are creation myths, games – the origin of all cultural activity, the dialectic chaos-order, axial civilizations – the germ of our time, and the struggle between generations – a factor of social transformation, and, within the second, creative capitalism, creative work in the context of the global economy of risk and uncertainty, and representative democracy. However, these two concepts are not isolated, but deeply interrelated, in a way that explains how creative originality builds a temporal narrative. It has been dislocated in late modernity and, with it, creativity has been broken.

The author endeavors herein to clarify some of the strategies that industrial agribusiness, in collusion with the state and multilateral structures, sets in motion in order to functionalize the lives of millions of farmers, so that their bodies, enunciations, and sensibilities can be repurposed in accordance with the dynamics of capital accumulation. The argument is based on the idea that agro-extractivism cannot be thought of exclusively as an economic-political and technological system, but as a complex interweaving of cultural meanings, aesthetics, and affections, which, amalgamated under the abstract name of "development", act as a support for the whole system's scaffolding. The book also explores the other side of the coin, describing how, and under what conditions, social movements are responding to the calamities generated by this model. The central thesis is that many ongoing agroecological processes are providing one of the most interesting guidelines at present for visualizing transitions towards post-development, post-extractivism, and the construction of multiple worlds beyond the sphere of capital. Political ecology of agriculture joins the calls that question the cultural project of modernity and the predatory sense imposed by the globalized food empire, and invites recognition of the importance of agroecology in the context of the end of the fossil-fuel era and the likely collapse of our industry-based civilization.

Book excerpt: Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the 1987 publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.

Se fue moldeando a la diversidad de idiosincrasias de las sociedades a las que se fue incorporando, agregó costumbres locales respondiendo a un prolongado y largo proceso de maduración y, cuando parecía consolidado, acabó sometido a las leyes del mercado y sumergió en una nueva aventura revolucionaria, pautada por la tecnología, por la velocidad de transmisión de la información y por la globalización. No obstante, nunca perdió su esencia humanista porque, en este juego, por la lúcida percepción y la sabiduría del escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano, “donde menos se espera salta lo imposible, el enano propina una lección al gigante y un negro esmirriado y chueco deja bobo al atleta esculpido en Grecia”.

Book excerpt: Orientalismo, exotismo y traducción pretende ahondar en la reflexión en torno a la traducción en cuanto vehículo mediatizado de contacto intelectual, presentando especial atención a la recepción de la cultura árabe-islámica en Europa y al papel desempeñado en ella por las distintas tradiciones de estudios árabes e islámicos. El colonialismo ha condicionado la visión que tenemos de otras culturas como la árabe e islámica. Textos como Las mil y una noches y, especialmente, sus traducciones a las lenguas europeas son paradigmas de estas visiones desenfocadas y exóticas. Las disciplinas habitualmente englobadas bajo la etiqueta de Orientalismo -en España fundamentalmente Arabismo y Africanismo- han estado en nuestro país condicionadas por dos hechos que las han llevado a divergir de otras tradiciones europeas. Por un lado, la existencia de un "Oriente doméstico", Alándalus, ha marcado el desarrollo y orientación de los estudios árabes, islámicos y orientales en la universidad española. Por otra parte la empresa colonial española se materializó en un Oriente, Marruecos, que, aunque no doméstico sí era demasiado cercano, demasiado inmediato para poder separarlo de los entresijos y vivencias de la propia historia de España.
