Book excerpt: Hoping It Might Be So brings together all of Kit Wright's previous collections for adults as well as three dozen new poems. The collection, first published in 2000, was described by Christina Patterson in the Sunday Times as 'funny and profoundly humane' and by Sophie Hannah in the PN Review as 'full of verve and energy, with a strong musical quality that makes you want to read on and hear more'. Sean O'Brien in the Times Literary Supplement described Kit Wright as 'a masterly yet modest poet' while Ruth Padel in the Independent on Sunday said that 'all through his work there is that poignancy, darkness, brush with despair, which marks great comic work.' The poet Anthony Wilson said that Wright 'can be funny, serious and moving, and sometimes all three in the space of a single poem'. Hoping It Might Be So is a rewarding collection from an interesting, prolific and lively poet whose poems range from ribald to grief-stricken, elegiac to rambunctious

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016 there were 437,465 children and teens across America removed from their homes and placed into foster care. The majority brought with them trauma from neglect and abuse they had experienced early in life. For over 45 years, Bruce T. Anderson has worked with hundreds of youth who have known trauma firsthand. Many have learned to breathe hope and have gone on to live productive lives. For Joni it was on a bicycle. For Allie it was on a mountain in Colorado. For Trina it started with disappointment at school. These are their stories. What others are saying: I laughed. I cried. Reading this helped me to understand a lot about troubled teens and even myself. You cannot read this book and not experience hope. Easy to read, but hard to put down. Faye B This book has the WOW factor aEUR| full of expectations, hope, anxiety and reassurances. aEUR| a must read full of faith, belief and security. Evie, Artist and Poet An inspirational account of a life's work in changing directions of broken young lives. Breathing Hope gives shape and substance to what hope looks like in the making. John C In Breathing Hope, I found inspirational stories of youth who because of deep trauma had too often been deemed hopeless by unspoken norms. At nine years of age, that was me. I recommend this book to anyone who has known the scars of trauma and to those who genuinely care about children and youth: parents, teachers, social workers, childcare workers, church/synagogue volunteers and anyone who wants to make a lasting difference. Dave E, Survivor and Breather of Hope Bruce T. Anderson is a graduate of Taylor University and has an MSSW degree from the University of Cincinnati. He has been a licensed social worker (LCSW) in the State of Maryland since 1985. He lives in Western, Maryland.

Book excerpt: In Hope Sings, So Beautiful, award-winning author Christopher Pramuk offers a mosaic of images and sketches for thinking and praying through difficult questions about race. The reader will encounter the perspectives of artists, poets, and theologians from many different ethnic and racial communities. This richly illustrated book is not primarily sociological or ethnographic in approach. Rather, its horizon is shaped by questions of theology, spirituality, and pastoral practice. Pramuk's challenging work on this difficult topic will stimulate fruitful conversations and fresh thinking, whether in private study or prayer; in classrooms, churches, and reading groups; or among friends and family around the dinner tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most popular source of theological hope for American Christians is that of Jurgen Moltmann. Preachers, teachers, and lay people reflect Moltmann's influence, with their hope in a this-worldly eschatology and a suffering God. However, an exclusive reliance on that hope deprives the church of crucial resources in the face of global economic, environmental, and military crises. This book explores Moltmannian hope and considers its costs before looking elsewhere for additional contributions, from Thomas Aquinas's theological virtue of hope to nihilism and beyond, in order to encourage the church to sustain and practice hope in Jesus Christ, our only hope.

Book excerpt: “[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker

And how do I go about seeking Him? "Birth and Rebirth: The Awakening of a Dormant Spirit" revolves around timeless and universal themes: the nature of the human experience and the reason for human struggle; the realization of humankind's highest aspirations; the final goal towards which all religions aim. Taking a philosophical approach, the book critically analyzes the root of human suffering, examines the merits and demerits of both science and religion (as they are commonly practiced), and proposes a method through which each individual human being can overcome his or her obstacles and can move forward in life with confidence and enthusiasm.

Book excerpt: Readers will greatly benefit reading this book's forerunner SO MUCH WATER SO LITTLE WOOD for they play in contrasting milieus of maladministration and usually well administered milieus of the financial and other worlds. The American Association of Universty Professors deserves praise for its penetrating light on that book's milieu benefitting employees and other educational institutions for future years. Professions have their unique vocabulary and idioms of wisdom as does the investment business. Its truth will be summarized. Business flourished for me. Ruth and I could vacation and travel - a more pleasant life. Sorrow struck. Ruth had developed small brain aneurysms and died within four days. Two and a half years later I married Janice Seybolt Morton, a widow with two young daughters. Life went on. And Princeton Seminary? Purposely locked in a forget corner. Then my phone rang. The same student who wanted a copy of my prayer decades ago, now Seminary Archivist, looked for my file, but it was forever assigned to trash. "I still have your prayer," he said. He came for three days, asking questions and recording my answers. He unlocked the corner. I had portraits of five deceased, outstanding former colleagues at Princeton painted for the Seminary, and eventually established endowments for scholarships and distribution of Bibles in South Africa, together with liberal contributions for a new library. Graciously the Seminary dedicated a lecture room in the new library for me on October 22, 2013. This book fulfills my dream of tribute to several of my friends at Pretoria University dedicating their lives to the Kingdom of God. They are all long gone now, one fifty years ago in 2013, but to all applies the inscription on Johannes Petrus Potgieter's grave stone at his mission station Rivoni: "THOU THEY WERE DEAD, YET SHALL THEY LIVE."
