Book Synopsis Native American Architecture by : Peter Nabokov
Download or read book Native American Architecture written by Peter Nabokov and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, Native American architecture calls to mind the wigwam, tipi, iglu, and pueblo. Yet the richly diverse building traditions of Native Americans encompass much more, including specific structures for sleeping, working, worshipping, meditating, playing, dancing, lounging, giving birth, decision-making, cleansing, storing and preparing food, caring for animals, and honoring the dead. In effect, the architecture covers all facets of Indian life. The collaboration between an architect and an anthropologist, Native American Architecture presents the first book-length, fully illustrated exploration of North American Indian architecture to appear in over a century. Peter Nabokov and Robert Easton together examine the building traditions of the major tribes in nine regional areas of the continent from the huge plank-house villages of the Northwest Coast to the moundbuilder towns and temples of the Southeast, to the Navajo hogans and adobe pueblos of the Southwest. Going beyond a traditional survey of buildings, the book offers a broad, clear view into the Native American world, revealing a new perspective on the interaction between their buildings and culture. Looking at Native American architecture as more than buildings, villages, and camps, Nabokov and Easton also focus on their use of space, their environment, their social mores, and their religious beliefs. Each chapter concludes with an account of traditional Indian building practices undergoing a revival or in danger today. The volume also includes a wealth of historical photographs and drawings (including sixteen pages of color illustrations), architectural renderings, and specially prepared interpretive diagrams which decode the sacred cosmology of the principal house types.
Book Synopsis Historic Zuni Architecture and Society by : Thomas John Ferguson
Download or read book Historic Zuni Architecture and Society written by Thomas John Ferguson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1996-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique approach to the Zuni Pueblo's history applying the architectural method of "space syntax" linking the structure of Zuni society to the structure of the architecture housing it. Drawing heavily on archeological findings, the volume nonetheless disputes the traditional archeological theory of population change as a basis for the changes in Zuni society, but does not offer any clear theories of its own. However, Ferguson (adjunct curator of archeology, Arizona State U.) does create a vivid historical, architectural analysis of the Zuni culture, society, and social and architectural structure from 1540 to the 1980s. Includes numerous diagrams, illustrations, and photographs.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology and History of Pueblo San Marcos by : Ann F. Ramenofsky
Download or read book The Archaeology and History of Pueblo San Marcos written by Ann F. Ramenofsky and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Marcos, one of the largest late prehistoric Pueblo settlements along the Rio Grande, was a significant social, political, and economic hub both before Spanish colonization and through the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. This volume provides the definitive record of a decade of archaeological investigations at San Marcos, ancestral home to Kewa (formerly Santo Domingo) and Cochiti descendants. The contributors address archaeological and historical background, artifact analysis, and population history. They explore possible changes in Pueblo social organization, examine population changes during the occupation, and delineate aspects of Pueblo/Spanish interaction that occur with Spaniards’ intrusion into the colony and especially the Galisteo Basin. Highlights include historical context, in-depth consideration of archaeological field and laboratory methods, compositional and stylistic analyses of the famed glaze-paint ceramics, analysis of flaked stone that includes obsidian hydration dating, and discussion of the beginnings of colonial metallurgy and protohistoric Pueblo population change.
Book Synopsis A Native American Encyclopedia by : Barry Pritzker
Download or read book A Native American Encyclopedia written by Barry Pritzker and published by Oxford : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispelling myths, answering questions, and stimulating thoughtful avenues for further inquiry, this highly absorbing reference provides a wealth of specific information about over 200 North American Indian groups in Canada and the United States. Readers will easily access important historical and contemporary facts about everything from notable leaders and relations with non-natives to customs, dress, dwellings, weapons, government, and religion. This book is at once exhaustive and captivating, covering myriad aspects of a people spread across a continent. Divided into ten geographic areas for easy reference, this work illustrates each Native American group in careful detail. Listed alphabetically, starting with the tribal name, translation, origin, and definition, each entry includes significant facts about the group's location and population, as well as impressive accounts of the group's history and culture. Bringing entries up-to-date, Barry Pritzker also presents current information on each group's government, economy, legal status, and land holdings. Whether interpreting the term "tribe" (many traditional Native American groups were not tribes at all but more like extended families) or describing how a Shoshone woman served as a guide on the Lewis and Clark expedition, Pritzker always presents the material in a clear and lively manner. In light of past and ongoing injustices and the momentum of Indian and Inuit self-determination movements, an understanding of Native American cultures as well as their contributions to contemporary society becomes increasingly important. A magnificent resource, this book liberally provides the essential information necessary to better grasp the history and cultures of North American Indians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that although professional architects were involved in the project, the architect was actually Lou Henry Hoover herself, who conceived the design of the house and worked out its details, using her architects largely for technical matters and to produce the drawings and supervise construction. As for the design, the book argues that it was inspired mainly by the Native American Pueblo architecture of New Mexico and Arizona.
