Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When unmourned experiences of helplessness and disavowed desires turn into a passive fatalism, people stop hoping for the best and fear the worst, despairing that the real world has anything good to offer. This can lead individuals to memorialize past sufferings through psychological symptoms and compulsive repetitions. Dr. Shabad discusses how patients, after many years of living a life limited by resentment, fear, and despair, can come to terms with their childhood experiences: a mother who can never be satisfied, a father who consistently buries his head in the newspaper. He explains how people can overcome hardships endured and losses suffered. The authentic spontaneous dialogue between therapist and patient provides the generosity and courage necessary to shed their now obsolete defenses and mourn what cannot be remedied or replaced. Rich clinical material demonstrates how mourning can bring about self-acceptance, and set individuals free to take responsibility for and live out their own personal truths. This is a deeply felt, and beautifully written tribute to the redemptive power of psychotherapy and to the regenerative capabilities in all human beings.

Book excerpt: How is hope to be found amid the ethical and political dilemmas of modern life? Writer and philosopher Mary Zournazi brought her questions to some of the most thoughtful intellectuals at work today. She discusses joyful revolt with Julia Kristeva, the idea of the rest of the world with Gayatri Spivak, the art of living with Michel Serres, the carnival of the senses with Michael Taussig, the relation of hope to passion and to politics with Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau. A dozen stimulating minds weigh in with their visions of a better social and political order. The result is a collaboration - of writing, of thinking, and of politics - that demonstrates more clearly than any single-authored project could how ideas encountering one another can produce the vision needed for social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In hope, Christian faith reconfigures the shape of what is familiar in order to pattern the contours of God's promised future. In this process, the present is continuously re-shaped by ventures of hopeful and expectant living. In art, this same poetic interplay between past, present and future takes specific concrete forms, furnishing vital resources for sustaining an imaginative ecology of hope. This volume attends to the contributions that architecture, drama, literature, music and painting can make, as artists trace patterns of promise, resisting the finality of modernity's despairing visions and generating hopeful living in a present which, although marked by sin and death, is grasped imaginatively as already pregnant with future.

Book excerpt: If children are our future, its important that they remember the past, because if they dont, no one will. Who, if not parents, can impart family histories and heritage upon children? Nkem DenChukwus inspirational collection, the issues of bloodline and heritage are tackled head-on, along with the importance of ones culture. In Part I, DenChukwu delves into the tribal heritage of the Igbos of Eastern Nigeria. She explains it vividly, how being born in any one country does not determine who you really are. Instead, your bloodline represents your true heritage. In understanding the difference, DenChukwu believes you can better understand yourself. In Part II, she transitions into lucid life tales to show the beauty in a language, how ones culture and the lack thereof, can affect ones thought processes and behavior. It is possible to lose an accent or assimilate into a new culture. It is also possible to forget your heritage, and in this forgetfulness, people lose much.

Book excerpt: Where is Jesus when we need him most? An influential pastor shares how despair can lead us to discover true hope and a deeper relationship with God, helping us emerge stronger and more joyful from times of crisis. “May this careful look at pain in the context of Jesus’s life open up avenues of discovery and healing.”—Mindy Caliguire, cofounder and president of Soul Care We all experience difficulties and hardships. But how can we learn to live richly in the midst of them? And even grow spiritually because of them? The answer is found in the hopeful humanity of Jesus. As the Son of God, Jesus wasn’t exempt from suffering, disappointment, or injustice. He lived in the real world as a real person. He wept for those he loved. He felt hunger and thirst. He endured temptation, betrayal, and ridicule. He died after being unjustly tortured. And somehow through it all, he embodied hope—by defeating death and opening a new world of life for us. In Echoing Hope, influential pastor and blogger Kurt Willems reveals how understanding the humanity of Jesus can radically transform our identity and empower us to step into our pain-filled world in a new way. Combining rich theological insight with personal stories and practices for response, he shows how we can overcome despair and encounter the beautiful potential of our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have all been told, at one time or another, to "never give up hope." It's a common injunction to children, but as we grow older, sustaining hope becomes more challenging, particularly in a world we come to see as often frightening, dark, and unjust. But what is this thing "hope," and why is hope so valuable that we are so often urged to preserve and protect it? This book explores the nature and essential role of hope in human life under conditions of oppression. Oppression is often a threat and damage to hope, yet many members of oppressed groups, including prominent activists pursuing a more just world, find hope valuable and even essential to their personal and political lives. Katie Stockdale offers a unique evaluative framework for hope that captures its intrinsic value, the rationality and morality of hope, and ultimately how we can hope well in the non-ideal world we share. She develops an account of the relationship between hope and anger about oppression and argues that when people are angry about oppression, they tend to also harbour hope for repair. When people's hopes for repair are not realized, as is often the case for those who are oppressed, their anger can evolve into bitterness. They feel unresolved anger as a result of losing hope that injustice will be sufficiently acknowledged and addressed. Fortunately, things do not have to be this way. Even when people may feel that they have lost all hope, faith can help them to be resilient in the face of oppression. They can join with others who share their experiences or commitments for a better world, uniting with them in collective action. By doing so, they can strengthen hope for the future when hope might otherwise be lost. Ultimately, this work illustrates the crucial value of hope for both individuals and collectives in the pursuit of justice, and in an increasingly uncertain world.

Book excerpt: This is a meditation about the vocation of the catechist. Whether you are a seasoned catechist or considering the invitation to become one, Called to Witness Hope reflects on the joy as well as the responsibilities of being someone who echoes the faith to others. A catechist is, first and foremost, a person living the grace of Baptism in the everyday, a joyful missionary disciple, a passionate witness of God’s love in history. Starting with some thoughts on the calling to be a catechist, the book invites readers to contemplate four images meant to inspire deeper appreciation for this ministry: evangelizer, bridge, companion, and prophet of hope. Called to Witness Hope builds upon the impetus generated by Pope Francis’s institution of the ministry of catechist in his apostolic letter Antiquum Ministerium (2021), the text of which is part of the book. This book is neither a commentary on the apostolic letter nor an analysis of the specialized ministry of the instituted catechist. This is a work about all catechists and for all catechists—a meditation on the beauty and power of this vocation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay on "what the imagination has made of the phenomenon of echo,” John Hollander examines aspects of the figure of echo in light of their significance for poetry. Looking at echo in its literal, acoustic sense, echo in myth, and echo as literary allusion, Hollander concludes with a study of the rhetorical status of the figure of echo and an examination of the ancient and newly interesting trope of metalepsis, or transumption, which it appears to embody. Centered on ways in which Milton's poetry echoes, and is echoed by, other texts, The Figure of Echo also explores Spenser and other Renaissance writers; romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth; and modern poets including Hardy, Eliot, Stevens, Frost, Williams, and Hart Crane. This book has implications for literary theory and holds great practical interest for students and teachers of American and English literature of all periods.
