This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 10-12 years, the research on homocysteine has become very active. About 1500 of articles are now published each year on homocysteine and the vitamins involved in its metabolism. A disturbed homocysteine metabolism can be an underlying factor for pregnancy complications and fetal malformations, cardiovascular disease, dementia, psychiatric and neurologic disorders and possibly carcinogenesis. A disturbed homocysteine metabolism can in most cases be normalised by treatment with folate and/or vitamines B12 and B6. Many of these findings therefore directly concern most practitioners. However, if there are good reviews covering single aspects of this research, these are published in specialised journals. The author has realised the difficulties for the practitioner in keeping updated. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and also offers more data on the vitamins. Over 1600 references are made available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 30 years ago, a young Harvard pathologist offered the medical community a theory for the cause of one of today's biggest killers-- heart disease. It is called the Homocysteine Theory and is the medical breakthrough that inspired Andrew Weil to label Dr. McCully as a visionary medical pioneer well ahead of his time. This discovery has the potential to save millions, yet ironically destroyed Dr. McCully's medical career. Homocysteine, a byproduct of metabolism, has been discovered to be a better risk indicator of heart disease than high cholesterol. A simple B6 vitamin and folic acid play a major role in controlling homocysteine levels. This proven theory will change the way the medical establishment views and treats heart disease. Today, the medical community is beginning to accept Dr. McCully's findings transforming his story from medical heresy to legitimate medicine. Updated and revised, complete with a new introduction by Walter Wilett, this eye opening book combines Dr. McCully's personal story and scientific philosophy with a fascinating exposition of his discovery and a special program to make use of this information to improve overall health.

Book excerpt: Laboratory Assessment of Vitamin Status provides a comprehensive understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches used for the evaluation of vitamin status, reducing harm in the general health setting. It outlines the application of 'Best Practice' approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status, giving physicians and other healthcare professionals the opportunity to make evidence-based interventions. Nearly every metabolic and developmental pathway in the human body has a dependency on at least one micronutrient. Currently, the clinical utility of approaches taken by laboratories for the assessment of vitamin status is generally poorly understood, missing the opportunity to diagnosis vitamin deficiencies. This essential reference gives clinical and biomedical scientists an understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status in the general health setting through change in practice. Nutritionists and dietitians gain an understanding of more sophisticated markers of vitamin status. - Describes specialist assays in sufficient detail to enable laboratories to replicate what is being performed by expert groups - Provides detailed information that supports laboratories in the setting up of methods for the evaluation of vitamin status - Informs laboratories looking for third party providers of specialist investigations - Provides an essential overview of reference ranges for each vitamin

Book excerpt: This personal scientific memoir describes how a chance observation concerning artery disease in children with rare inherited abnormalities of metabolism, often called experiments of Nature, led to the discovery of a new theory of heart disease, cancer and diseases of ageing. As explained in subsequent chapters, this new theory places the amino acid homocysteine at the heart of altered metabolism of diseases of ageing. Not only does this theory illuminate and explain the origin of these diseases, development of this theory logically leads to a novel and revolutionary metabolic and nutritional program for disease prevention and treatment, potentially benefiting individuals and populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important and timely volume. The history of research in homocysteine metabolism can be divided into three periods. The first phase was the exploration of the individual reactions and metabolites that characterize the transmethylation and transsulfuration sequences. The former originated with his description of the biosynthesis of methylpyridine and culminated in the work of Cantoni and Axelrod. Similarly the finding that insulin contained cystine was a potent catalyst for the metabolic and nutritional studies of Rose and du Vigneaud. The description and the definition of homocystinuria, a rare inherited meta bolic disorder, marked the beginning of the second historical period. Where previously there had been few laboratories located largely in the United States soon there were numerous research groups representing many nationalities. The more intense focus led to major advances, both in the laboratory and in the clinics. Studies of afflicted individuals, when combined with investigations in experimental animals, provided the basis for a concept of methionine metabo lism that encompassed both transmethylation and transsulfuration. The central role of homocysteine was apparent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and most westernized nations. Both CVDs and their risk factors confer substantial risk for stroke and dementia, but are also associated with more subtle changes in brain structure and function and cognitive performance prior to such devastating clinical outcomes. It has been suggested that there exists a continuum of brain abnormalities and cognitive difficulties associated with increasingly severe manifestations of cardiovascular risk factors and diseases that precede vascular cognitive impairment and may ultimately culminate in stroke or dementia. This second edition examines the relations of a host of behavioral and biomedical risk factors, in addition to subclinical and clinical CVDs, to brain and cognitive function. Associations with dementia and pre-dementia cognitive performance are reported, described, and discussed with a focus on underlying brain mechanisms. Future research agendas are suggested, and clinical implications are considered. The volume is a resource for professionals and students in neuropsychology, behavioral medicine, neurology, cardiology, cardiovascular and behavioral epidemiology, gerontology, geriatric medicine, nursing, adult developmental psychology, and for other physicians and health care professionals who work with patients with, or at risk for, CVDs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps clinicians to optimally and appropriately utilize homocysteine levels in the diagnosis, prediction and management of and research into vascular disease and many other conditions. It also familiarizes readers with the pathophysiology and clinical implications of hyperhomocysteinemia. Laboratory investigations are gaining importance in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients, and as such, scientists and laboratorians are constantly attempting to identify new markers that will help in earlier diagnosis and better prognostication of conditions with high morbidity and mortality, as well as high prevalence. According to the WHO, developing countries are home to 80% of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke – conditions with a mortality second only to cancer. Intensive research in these areas has resulted in the identification of homocysteine (declared the ‘marker of the millennium’) and several new markers for the diagnosis and prediction of CAD and stroke. The book is a valuable resource for clinicians and consultants in practice, as well as for postgraduate and undergraduate students of medicine, biotechnology and biochemistry.

Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive treatise on homocysteine to treat the topic from the basic biochemical, metabolic, genetic, and dietary determinants to disease relationships, including concepts of pathogenesis. In addition, the public health implications of these associations are described. To date, evidence strongly supports the hypotheses that Hyperhomocysteinemia is a strong independent determinant of vascular disease and Many cases of hyperhomocysteinemia are amenable to homocysteine-lowering treatment with B-vitamins.£/LIST£ The strength of this evidence is prompting discussion of large-scale homocysteine-lowering interventions. Against this background of growing recognition of the importance of homocysteine as a factor in coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease, the editors conceived of a state-of-the-art monograph on homocysteine and its relationships to disease. The contributors would be those scientists who, in fact, had written the history of this field of study over the past third of a century. The editors invited the leading investigators in the world to contribute chapters in their own areas of expertise to this monograph and to deliver those papers at the first International Meeting on Homocysteine in Ireland, which has emerged as an important study center and where the first cases of homocystinuria were reported more than three decades ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 15 years the research on homocysteine and the vitamins involved in its metabolism has become very dynamic. About 1,500 publications on the subject are now published each year. The research has long mainly focused on the association between homocysteine and cardiovascular disease, but also pregnancy complications/ fetal malformations. There is, however, an increasing interest in the connection between the homocysteine metabolism and neuropsychiatric disease with a steeply increasing number of publications. In particular, the association between homocysteine metabolism and cognitive decline/dementia attracts much interest. If simple, non-toxic homocysteine-lowering treatment with vitamins can reduce the incidence of, or delay the onset of dementia, it would have an enormous impact in societies with a rapidly increasing number of elderly at risk for dementia. This book summarises the research within the neuropsychiatric field, but also gives an overview of the underlying biochemistry and of diagnostic aspects. About 1,000 references are given. Christina Bolander-Gouaille, a pharmacist, has for over 10 years specialised in writing reviews/monographs on homocysteine and related vitamins. This is her third book in a series edited by Springer Verlag. This book, however, is written in collaboration with Teodoro Bottiglieri, who is director of neuropharmacology and senior research scientist at Baylor University, Institute for Metabolic Diseases in Dallas, USA.

This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excess of homocysteine, a product of the metabolism of the essential amino acid methionine, is associated with poor health, is linked to heart and brain diseases in general human populations, and accelerates mortality in heart disease patients. Neurological and cardiovascular abnormalities occur in patients with severe genetic hyperhomocysteinemia and lead to premature death due to vascular complications. Although it is considered a non-protein amino acid, studies over the past dozen years have discovered mechanisms by which homocysteine becomes a component of proteins. Homocysteine-containing proteins lose their normal biological function and become auto-immunogenic and pro-thrombotic. In this book, the author, a pioneer and a leading contributor to the field, describes up-to date studies of the biological chemistry of homocysteine-containing proteins, as well as pathological consequences and clinical implications of their formation. This is a comprehensive account of the broad range of basic science and medical implications of homocysteine-containing proteins for health and disease.
