Book excerpt: Are you a HoCo? I think you are. A HoCo is not a dirty word. It's short for 'homo competens', and that is not an insult. That's Latin for 'competent person'. If you are a HoCo, or want to be one, this book is for you. This book talks about competent people in the network age. It discusses competence, the times we live in, and presents guidelines and tools that you - the homo competens - will need to thrive in your personal life, at work, and in society at large. If we really mean that 'competent people are our most important asset', let's not treat competence as a black box or leave it to chance.

Book excerpt: This book explores the socially and individually determined nature of media literacy, addressing the central question of how individuals’ media activity can be explained and evaluated. It examines people's media activity through the relationship between their competence to act and actual actions. Further, the book discusses the social factors that foster self-determined media activity, including people's abilities and skills and the associated knowledge that facilitates such skills, from the perspectives of various social science disciplines. Lastly, it applies these theoretical reflections to two empirical studies. Overall, this book provides a fundamental introduction to theories of media socialization, media literacy and media competence, and to the relation between media and socialization. It analyses international discourses on children, media, media literacy, and digital literacy. This book is of interest to scholars and researchers in the field of media studies, including media sociology and media education, communication, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: This book examines and problematises the concept of 'educational inclusion' within schools. Despite varying definitions of inclusion according to national context, there is a growing consensus that educational systems presented as ‘inclusive’ in policy and professional discourse, in practice, legitimise processes that appear far from inclusive. The editors and contributors draw together research from multiple contexts that considers systemic exclusionary pressures and practices from multiple perspectives, particularly less visible forms of social and educational exclusion. The book calls for true inclusion as an overriding socio-political and educational policy objective, and to end the marginalisation of specific groups beyond familiar neoliberal political discourses of piecemeal remediation.

Book excerpt: This volume pays homage to the historian of logic Angel d’Ors (1951-2012), by bringing together a set of studies that together illuminate the complex historical development of logic and semantics. Two main traditions, Aristotelian and terminist, are showcased to demonstrate the changes and confrontations that constitute this history, and a number of different authors and texts, from the Boethian reception of Aristotle to the post-medieval terminism, are discussed. Special topics dealt with include the medieval reception of ancient logic; technical tools for the medieval analysis of language; the medieval theory of consequence; the medieval practice of disputation and sophisms; and the post-medieval refinement of the terminist tools. Contributors are E.J. Ashworth, Allan Bäck, María Cerezo, Sten Ebbesen, José Miguel Gambra, C.H. Kneepkens, Kalvin Normore, Angel d’Ors, Paloma Pérez-Ilzarbe, Stephen Read, Joke Spruyt, Luisa Valente, and Mikko Yrjönsuuri. These articles were also published in Vivarium, Volume 53, Nos. 2-4 (2015).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point of this book is the 'civil war' of ideas that broke out during the early 2010s about the purpose and even the desirability of the European Union as a polity, with a number of right-wing populist formations openly advocating for exiting the Union. The sovereign debt crisis triggered a spiral of ideological decommunalization: national leaders seemed to have lost that sense of 'togetherness' and mutual bonds that had been laboriously developed over decades of integration. Politics and Social Visions explores this politically disruptive process from an ideational perspective, on the assumption that symbols and visions play a crucial role. In processes of polity formation, ideologies offer competing partisan views, but tend to converge along the 'communal' dimension, which defines the nature and boundaries of the emerging polity. This convergence has been a challenge for the EU since its origins, as it has required the construction of a coherent and acceptable image of Europe as a compound polity of nation-states with a divisive past. Maurizio Ferrera offers a reconstruction of how the main ideological currents have struggled - and often failed - to reconfigure their horizontal profiles (i.e. their images of the national within Europe) into a new vertical profile (i.e. an image of the European within the national). The challenge has been especially demanding for European left-wing parties, which have been largely unable to forge a shared and recognizable 'social vision' of the European Union. Only during the COVID pandemic have the seeds of a novel communal consensus emerged that might prove capable of defeating the anti-communal views of Eurosceptic ideologies and free market technocrats.
