Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Everyone who cares about the human adventure will find new information and new angles of vision.”—Martin E. Marty, The New York Times Book Review This extraordinary work delves into the subject of religion in the prehistoric and ancient worlds—humankind’s earliest quests for meaning. From Neanderthal burials to the mythology of the Iron Age, to the religions of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Israel, India, and beyond, it offers both an appreciation of the wide-ranging diversity of religious expression—and a consideration of the fundamental unity of religious phenomena. “Will arouse the interest of all historians of western religion, since it includes chapters on the religions of Canaan and Israel. However, the book must be read cover to cover if one wants to grasp the significance of its gigantic historical scope.”—Church History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Professor Halkin's articles forms a complement to his recent biography of Erasmus of Rotterdam. The articles published here are concerned with his activities and his behaviour, and describe parts of what may be called his spiritual and intellectual itinerary, different aspects of his thought, or different chapters of his life. The personality of Erasmus continues to make a striking impact upon those who read him, but that it is hard to define it clearly or simply may be seen from the variety of differing judgements scholars have made. The last of the great Latin writers, the author of more than a hundred works, he strove hard to disseminate his ideas: with his books he expounded the theories of Christian humanism; in his treatises and letters he incessantly preached peace; right to the end of his life he worked for the reform of the Church. These themes recur in these articles, but, in Professor Halkin's view, it is his faith, his militant and uncompromising Christianity which gives his character its unity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventy-two entries in this volume explore, among other topics, the history, geography, and religion of Greece, Plato's mythology and philosophy, the powers of marriage in Greece, heroes and gods of war in the Greek epic, and origins of mankind in Greek myths. Ancient Egyptian cosmology, anthropology, rituals, and religion—closely linked to Greek mythology—are also discussed. "In a world that remains governed by powerful myths, we must deepen our understanding of ourselves and others by considering more carefully the ways in which the mythological systems to which we cling and social institutions and movements to which we are committed nourish each other. Yves Bonnefoy's Mythologies not only summarizes the progress that has already been made toward this end, but also lays the foundation for the difficult work that lies ahead."—Mark C. Taylor, New York Times Book Review "The almost 100 contributors combine, with characteristic precision and élan, the arts of science and poetry, of analysis and translation. The result is a treasury of information, brilliant guesswork, witty asides, and revealing digressions. This is a work of genuine and enduring excitement."—Thomas D'Evelyn, Christian cience Monitor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, an international collaboration sponsored by the Commission on the History of Historiography, is devoted to historians of the 19th and 20th centuries. Offering dictionary entries for historians from more than 35 countries, the editors have sought to illustrate specific domains of history and focus on those scholars who were important to particular cultures and histories. Consultants from each area suggested historians for inclusion, thus providing a unique national perspective. The volume begins with an explanatory preface and a detailed introduction to the time period covered. The entries are then arranged by national or geographical areas, and alphabetized within each regional section. As a general rule, the editors have excluded living historians from the dictionary. Cross references are indicated within the text for those individuals who are also the subjects of separate entries, and the editors have provided both an index of historians and a general subject index. English translations of books and articles in non-Western languages are also cited. This book will be an important reference source for studies in world history and historiography, as well as a significant addition to public, college, and university libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explains how the myths of Greece and Rome were transmitted from antiquity to the Renaissance. Luc Brisson argues that philosophy was ironically responsible for saving myth from historical annihilation. Although philosophy was initially critical of myth because it could not be declared true or false and because it was inferior to argumentation, mythology was progressively reincorporated into philosophy through allegorical exegesis. Brisson shows to what degree allegory was employed among philosophers and how it enabled myth to take on a number of different interpretive systems throughout the centuries: moral, physical, psychological, political, and even metaphysical. How Philosophers Saved Myths also describes how, during the first years of the modern era, allegory followed a more religious path, which was to assume a larger role in Neoplatonism. Ultimately, Brisson explains how this embrace of myth was carried forward by Byzantine thinkers and artists throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance; after the triumph of Chistianity, Brisson argues, myths no longer had to agree with just history and philosophy but the dogmas of the Church as well.
