Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hildegard of Bingen (1098 '1179) describes the virtue of Fortitude teaching the other virtues in the fire of the Holy Spirit. Like Fortitude, Hildegard was enkindled by the Holy Spirit and edified many with her teaching. Hildegard of Bingen's Homilies on the Gospels are here translated for the first time from Latin into English. Hildegard's sisters recorded and preserved her informal preaching in this collection of homilies on twenty-seven gospel pericopes. As teacher and superior to her sisters, Hildegard probably spoke to them in the chapter house, with the scriptural text either before her or recited from memory, according to Benedictine liturgical practice. The Homilies on the Gospels prove essential for comprehending the coherent theological Vision that Hildegard constructs throughout her works, including the themes of salvation history, the drama of the individual soul, the struggle of virtues against vices, and the life-giving and animating force of greenness (uiriditas). Moreover, the Homilies on the Gospels establish Hildegard as the only known female systematic exegete of the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: In these 40 sermons on the Gospel, Gregory the Great can be seen as both pastor and preacher. He pays attention to the historical details of Scripture, seeks out its moral application to daily Christian life, and through it reflects on the hidden reality of God. He believed that the Christian study of the Scripture entailed a personal engagement with mystery and openness to transformation, as an attempt to achieve individual perception of the divine while one is still bound by earthly and bodily ties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's homilies on the Gospel of John are masterpieces not only of theological profundity but also of pastoral engagement. This volume also includes the index for Homilies on the Gospel of John (1-40). Few ancient Christian authors attempted anything like a complete commentary on the Gospel of John, among them Origen, John Chrysostom and Augustine. Of these, Augustine's must count as the greatest. Unlike Origen's, it has come down to us in its entirety, and of the others that remain it is certainly the most theologically profound. John's gospel allows Augustine to range broadly over themes that were his life’s work —the Trinity, the person of Christ, the nature of the Church and its sacraments, the fulfillment of the divine plan. The 124 homilies that constitute Augustine's commentary, however, are masterpieces not only of theological profundity but also of pastoral engagement. In the question-and-answer style that he frequently employs, for example, one can sense Augustine's real awareness of his congregation's struggles with the gospel text. And the congregation's response to Augustine, which he frequently alludes to, is an indication of the success of his dialogical preaching style. The Johannine literature drew out the best in Augustine. The Homilies on the Gospel of John are the indispensable complement to The Homilies on The First Epistle of John, published in this series, and they should be a part of any serious theological library.

Book excerpt: Letters and Homilies for Jewish Christians is the second of three volumes extending Ben Witherington's innovative socio-rhetorical analysis of New Testament books to the latter-Pauline and non-Pauline corpora. A third volume will extend the focus on Letters and Homilies for Hellenized Christians begun in the first volume. By dividing the volumes according to the socioreligious contexts for which they were written, Witherington sheds fresh light on the documents, their provenance, character and importance. Throughout, Witherington shows his thorough knowledge of recent literature on these texts and focuses his attention on the unique insights brought about through socio-rhetorical analysis that either reinforces or corrects those gleaned from other approaches. "Bridging the Horizons" sections point to the relevance of the text for believers today, making this volume of special value to pastors and general readers as well as to students and scholars. Features and Benefits Provides commentary from a prominent New Testament scholar Offers a fresh look at Hebrews, James and Jude in light of recent study and socio-rhetorical concerns Includes "Closer Look" sections that explore contemporary issues in more detail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), the only medieval woman known to have authored systematic works of exegesis, composed fifty-eight little-studied Expositiones euangeliorum, homilies on twenty-seven Gospel passages. Hildegard described her divine charge to restore the tottering faith of her era through the revelation of hidden mysteries in the Scriptures. She was to continue the exegetical tradition of the Fathers and to construct moral fortifications with the words of Scripture in order to defend her sisters against the forces of evil. Hildegard of Bingen and her Gospel Homilies constitutes the first in-depth study of Hildegard's Expositiones and of her exegesis, preaching, and use of sources. It explores the Expositiones in the context of Hildegard's intellectual and cultural milieu and underscores the central role of biblical interpretation in the seer's works. Furthermore, this book re-examines Hildegard's self-depiction in the context of monastic education for women, the magistra's exchange with her mentors and friends, and her rich use of divine voice to empower her own expression. This is a new, exciting, and erudite study on one of the most influential female mystics.

For the Father lovelh the Son, and sheweth Him all things that Himself doe th: and He will shew Him greater works than these, that ye may marrel. For, as the Father r nine Hi up the dead, and quickeneth them; so the Son also quickeneth whom He will. For the Father judgeth not any, but all judgment He hath given to the Son; that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father Which hath sent Him. 1. Yesterday, in so far as the Lord vouchsafed to bestow, with what ability we might we discoursed, and with what capacity we might we understood, how the works of the Father and the Son are inseparable; and not so, that some the Father doeth, others the Son, but that the Father doeth them all by the Son, as by His Word, of Which is said, All things were made by Him, and without Him was nothing made. Let us see to-day the words which follow, and of the same Lord let us both pray, and hope for His mercy, that first, if He deem it meet, we may understand what is true: but if we cannot do this, that we may not go into that which is false. For it is better not to know than to err: but to know is better than not to know. Therefore before all things we must strive that we may know: if we be able to do so, thanks be to God; but if we be not able this while to attain unto truth, let us not go to falsehood. What we are, and what the thing we treat of, this we ought to consider. We arc men, bearing flesh, walking in this life: and albeit now 324 We grow, as infants at the In-east, by loving. . of the seed of the Word of God born anew, yet in such sort in Christ made new that we are not yet wholly stripped of Adam. For, what there is in us, mortal and corruptible, ...

A close familiarity with the words of the Gospels brings us into consonance with Jesus, inspires in us his love for the world, builds up enthusiasm for his project of the Kingdom of God, and infuses his Spirit in us. Without our scarcely noticing it, we become Christians. This personal meditation on the words of Jesus transforms us more than all the explanations, sermons, and exhortations which reach us from the outside. People change from within.
