Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homiletic and Catechetic Studies, According to the Spirit of Holy Scripture and of the Ecclesiastical Year The exalted authority of the Catholic preacher does not indeed clothe him with oficial infallibility, but in consequence of the intimate union of the preacher with the teaching Church, in consequence of the superintendency and direction of the preaching ofice by this same infallible teaching Church, in consequence of a certain participation of the preaching ofiice in the magisterium ordinarium of the Church the hearing Church possesses a real guaranty that through the preachers, united with the bishop and the Pope, drawing through earnest efiorts from the source of Christ, it receives the truth, the real unadulterated truth of the infallible Church. But this living authority of teaching, with its rich organs of life, is at all times capable and prepared to correct at once all possible deviations from the truth. But all this limitation the preacher does not find to be a burden, but rather a binding to that truth which makes us free. The Son of God, Who rises through His own power. Resurrexit, non est hic: videte locum ubi posuerunt eum. The Gospel announces this fact: Christ Himself announces it in the Introit. The Church puts the words of Psalm 138 in a proper and deeply significant sensus accommodal'/us, into the mouth of the risen Christ Who announces His own deed. Christ announces Himself solemnly as the victorious Son of God. He addresses, as it were, at His resurrection, the Father in Heaven and man on earth in the words: resurrexi et adhuc sum tecum, alleluja: I rose up (oh God!) and am still with Thee (in spite of the dreadful suflering and death, united to Thee, oh God!) The Father raises the Son by His all-powerful hand, that all may believe in Him; this is for Him the greatest testimony of the Father. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching in congregations with many children is one of the most difficult challenges many preachers face. Whether you are a priest, deacon, catechist, or prayer leader, this book offers practical help in crafting specific homilies for children. Drawing on insights gleaned within the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Garrido helps preachers understand key characteristics of childhood and children’s spirituality and presents ways to reflect on Scripture through the lens of the young child. Preachers will discover that they are preaching with children, rather than preaching to them.

Book Synopsis A Handbook for Catholic Preaching by : Edward Foley
Download or read book A Handbook for Catholic Preaching written by Edward Foley and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While admitting particular parameters and priorities for Roman Catholic preachers, this volume was intentionally envisioned as a handbook for "catholic" preaching in the broadest and most universal sense of that term. Cosponsored by the Catholic Academy of Liturgy, the Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics, and the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions, it covers the role of the Scriptures in preaching, the challenges of preaching in a digital age, sermonizing in an interfaith context, and the need for a liberative and prophetic word that cuts across denominations and even faith traditions. Intended to aid those who teach or direct the preaching arts, the design and writing style of this book are particularly calibrated to graduate students in ministerial studies. Every article is a self-contained overview of a particular historical period, genre of preaching, homiletic theory, or contemporary issue. This more encyclopedic approach—devoid of footnotes, yet supported by pertinent bibliography and an extensive index—provides a sufficiently rich yet thoroughly accessible gateway to major facets of the preaching arts at this stage of the twenty-first century.
