The Important Things of Life examines women’s work and family lives in Sweetwater County in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Focusing on the community of Blue, Arizona, Stauder details how the problems of overgrazing, erosion, and environmental stresses on the open range in the early twentieth century coincided with a push by the newly created US Forest Service to develop fenced grazing allotments on federal lands. Later in the twentieth century, with the enactment of the Endangered Species Act and other laws, the growing power of urban-based environmental groups resulted in the reduction of federal grazing leases throughout the West. The ranch is a beautiful parcel of about 3,300 acres and this book is designed to showcase that beauty and recognize the efforts of the owners to preserve and enhance this treasure for future generations.
