Book Synopsis The Iliad by : Geoffrey Stephen Kirk
Download or read book The Iliad written by Geoffrey Stephen Kirk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a projected six-volume Commentary on Homer's Iliad, under the General Editorship of professor G.S. Kirk. Professor Kirk himself is the editor of the present volume, which covers the first four Books of Iliad. It consists of four introductory chapters, dealing in particular with rhythm and formular techniques, followed by the detailed commentary which aims at helping serious readers by attempting to identify and deal with most of the difficulties which might stand in the way of a sensitive and informed response to the poem. The Catalogues in Book 2 recieve especially full treatment. The book does not include a Greek text - important matters pertaining to the text are discussed in the commentary. It is hoped that the volume as a whole will lead scholars to a better understanding of the epic style as well as of many well-known thematic problems on a larger scale. This Commentary will be an essential reference work for all students of Greek literature. Archaeologists and historians will also find that it contains matters of relevance to them.

Book Synopsis Racism in America by : Harvard University Press
Download or read book Racism in America written by Harvard University Press and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism in America has been the subject of serious scholarship for decades. At Harvard University Press, we’ve had the honor of publishing some of the most influential books on the subject. The excerpts in this volume—culled from works of history, law, sociology, medicine, economics, critical theory, philosophy, art, and literature—are an invitation to understand anti-Black racism through the eyes of our most incisive commentators. Readers will find such classic selections as Toni Morrison’s description of the Africanist presence in the White American literary imagination, Walter Johnson’s depiction of the nation’s largest slave market, and Stuart Hall’s theorization of the relationship between race and nationhood. More recent voices include Khalil Gibran Muhammad on the pernicious myth of Black criminality, Elizabeth Hinton on the link between mass incarceration and 1960s social welfare programs, Anthony Abraham Jack on how elite institutions continue to fail first-generation college students, Mehrsa Baradaran on the racial wealth gap, Nicole Fleetwood on carceral art, and Joshua Bennett on the anti-Black bias implicit in how we talk about animals and the environment. Because the experiences of non-White people are integral to the history of racism and often bound up in the story of Black Americans, we have included writers who focus on the struggles of Native Americans, Latinos, and Asians as well. Racism in America is for all curious readers, teachers, and students who wish to discover for themselves the complex and rewarding intellectual work that has sustained our national conversation on race and will continue to guide us in future years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 2 I all the books of the Iliad, there is fcarce any more pleating than the third. It may be divided into five parts, each of which has a beauty different from the other. The firlt contains what pafl'ed before the two armies, and the propofal of the combat between Paris and Menelaus: the attention and fufpenfe of thefe mighty bolts, which were jutl: upon the point of Jo1n1ng battle, and the lofty manner of offering and accepting this important and un expefied challenge, have fomething ln them wonderfully pompous, and of an amufing folemnity. The fecond part, which defcribes the behaviour of Helena in this juncture, her conference with the old king and his counfellors, with the review of the heroes from the battlements, is an epifode entirely of another fort, which ex eels 1n the natural and pathetick. The third confilts of the cere monies of the oath on both fides, and the preliminaries to the com bat; with the beautiful retreat of Priam, who in the tendernefs of a parent withdraws from the fight of the duel: thefe particulars detain the reader in expectation, and heighten his impatience for the fight itfelf. The fourth is the defcription of the due], an exaé't piece of painting, where we fee every attitude, motion, and aftion of the combatants particularly and diflinétly, and which con eludes with a furprizing propriety, in the refcue of Paris by Ven'us. The machine, of that Goddefs, which makes the fifth part, and whofe end is to reconcile Paris and Helena, is admirable in every circumfiance: the remonfirance (he holds with the Goddefs, the reluétance with which the obeys her, the reproaches (he calls upon Paris, and the flattery and courtlhip with which he [0 foon wins her over to him. Helen (the main caufe of this war) Was not to be made an odious character; {he is drawn by this great matter with the Brick firokes, as a-frai], but not as an abandoned creature. She has perpetual firuggles of virtue on the one fide, and foftnefl'es which overcome them, on the other. Our author has been remarkably careful to tell us this whenever be but nightly names her 1n the foregoing part of his work, the 1s. Reprefented at the fame time as repentant and it is thus we fee her at large at her firfi appearance in the prefent book; which is one of the (hortelt of the whole Iliad, but in recompence has beauties almofi in every line, and molt of them (0 obvious, that to acknowledge them we need only to read them.
