Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathic Practice of Medicine Notwithstanding the high estimation in which he very properly held the advantage of being able to select, oftentimes with perfect accuracy, the proper remedy by means of the symptoms, Hahnernann appears always to have recognised the importance of aknowledge of those remedies which had proved most generally or most strikingly useful in those dis eases which present a somewhat constant and fixed character. He has, therefore, from time to time, as experience has con firmed the value of remedies, in such diseases, not hesitated to recommend them to the attention of physicians. Other physicians having imitated his example in this respect, homeopathic medicine is at length able to present very use? Ful, though far from complete works, based upon experience in practice, and which may serve as guides to the proper remedies for many forms of disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders in Homoeopathic Therapeutics Second. - To try to discourage the disposition to quarrel over Symptomatology and Pathology. Neither can be ruled out, and it is foolish for our school to divide on such a bone of contention. Every symptom has its pathological significance, but we cannot always give it in words; but the fact that it has such meaning is sufficient reason for prescribing on the Symptom or Symptoms without insisting on, or trying to give, the explanation. Third. - To insist on the fact that the question of dose is still an open one, and so I have taken pains to give the dose I have found best, not insisting that anyone is bound to give the same; but it is fair to say that if they use a different one and fail, they must blame themselves, not me. F ourth. - To condemn the abuse of drugs, both in the old school and ours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathic Therapeutics: As Applied to Obstetrics The author earnestly hopes that the scope and design of this little work will not be misunderstood. A com prehensive collection of remedies, with their symptoms, clinical and pathogenetic, has not been attempted, how ever much a work of that kind may be needed. The most characteristic features of a limited number of remedies, and those only, are embraced. That some valuable drugs, and many important indications, have been omitted, is highly probable, since the practice and experience of physicians do not run in uniform grooves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathic Therapeutics in Ophthalmology The systematic arrangement of the materia medica will facilitate ready reference. Drug characteristics are given because with their aid a much more successful prescription may be made. This book is small, the remedies comparatively few, because only reliable indications have been given. Quality has been preferred to quantity. To most of the remedies in our materia medica have there been attributed one or more eye symptoms but, as yet, without confirmation. To include these would but serve to confuse the reader and impair his confidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional (“standard,” “traditional”) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial–as well as one of the most popular–alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances–minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by “entering” the body’s “vital force.” Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution. In Copeland’s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach–Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be “real” doctors, and how “real” doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath. At the center of Copeland's Cure is Royal Samuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical “diploma mills”). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research–controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies.
