Book excerpt: Soon after the fall of the Aztec empire in 1521, missionaries began teaching Latin to native youths in Mexico. This initiative was intended to train indigenous students for positions of leadership, but it led some of them to produce significant writings of their own in Latin, and to translate a wide range of literature, including Aesop's fables, into their native language. Aztec Latin reveals the full extent to which the first Mexican authors mastered and made use of European learning and provides a timely reassessment of what those indigenous authors really achieved.

Book excerpt: This manual provides a detailed presentation of the various Romance languages as they appear in texts written by Jews, mostly using the Hebrew alphabet. It gives a comprehensive overview of the Jews and the Romance languages in the Middle Ages (part I), as well as after the expulsions (part II). These sections are dedicated to Judaeo-Romance texts and linguistic traditions mainly from Italy, northern and southern France (French and Occitan), and the Iberian Peninsula (Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese). The Judaeo-Spanish varieties of the 20th and 21st centuries are discussed in a separate section (part III), due to the fact that Judaeo-Spanish can be considered an independent language. This section includes detailed descriptions of its phonetics/phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax.

Book excerpt: Through an examination of paratextuality in late antique literature, this collection of essays reconsiders the importance of the written material that appears in the margins of ancient poetic texts. Paratexts such as headings, prefaces, letters et al. have largely been skimmed over or completely disregarded in favour of the main ancient work. However, there is now a new wave of scholarship that takes into consideration the reading of books in line with the different 'margins', or 'frames', and the structures (de-)constructed by them. A salient feature of late antique poetry is the presence of the paratextual. For example, the prefaces of Ausonius, Claudian, Avianus, Sidonius Apollinaris, and Venantius Fortunatus are studied in their own right by the contributors, who present new understandings and interpretations of the aims of these late antique writers. In keeping with its subject matter, this volume presents a multitude of approaches intended not only to look at, but rather to read and take seriously the paratextual material. The result is a reframing of our appreciation of the marginal matter, which has up until this point been overlooked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread and culturally significant impact of Percy Bysshe Shelley's writings in Europe constitutes a particularly interesting case for a reception study because of the variety of responses they evoked. If radical readers cherished the 'red' Shelley, others favoured the lyrical poet, whose work was, like Byron's, anthologized and set to music. His major dramatic works, The Cenci and Prometheus Unbound, inspired numerous fin-de-siècle and expressionist dramatists and producers from Paris to Moscow. Shelley was read by, and influenced, the novelist Stendhal, the political theorist Engels, the Spanish symbolist Jiménez, and the Russian modernist poet Akhmatova. This exciting collection of essays by an international team of leading scholars considers translations, critical and biographical reviews, fictionalizations of his life, and other creative responses. It probes into transnational cross-currents to demonstrate the depth of Shelley's impact on European culture since his death in 1822. It will be an indispensable research resource for academics, critics, and writers with interests in Romanticism and its legacies.

Book excerpt: The Marian miracle tale of thirteenth-century Spain and France is an unusual thematic genre comprising tales, songs, poems, plays, and sermons dedicated to miraculous occurrences attributed to the Virgin Mary. While there are scholarly articles on particular aspects of this large and important body of literature, there has been no attempt to bring its principal authors together into a single scholarly study. Bringing five well-known thirteenth-century authors together -- Gonzalo de Berceo, Gautier de Coinci, Cardinal Jacques de Vitry, Rutebeuf, and King Alfonso X of Spain -- the book shows how each used the Marian collections for individual purposes. Mary is portrayed in a variety of manifestations, as Mediatrix, Monitrix, Maler Dei, National Patroness, and even as something close to the troubadour's desired or unattainable Lady. Berceo was a secular priest who found an older collection of tales useful as an instructive tool. Gautier, an aristocratic monk of intellectual refinement, had a nearly exclusively artistic interest in his Marian materials, while Cardinal Jacques de Vitry -- an eminent churchman and eloquent reformer -- sought with his carefully chosen tales to bring Marianism into the fold of doctrinal orthodoxy. Rutebeuf, a minstrel, accepted the tales as popular piety and returned them to his audience in a spirit of reproach to the sometimes heavy-handed didactic use made of the material by churchmen with vested interests. Finally, the personal voice and directing presence of Spain's King Alfonso X makes of his famous Marian collection, the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a part of his social and religious program for Spain. Additionally, a reflection upon the formalistcriticism of Bakhtin and Todorov suggests new possibilities for seeing within some Marian tales of the period a subtle tool for the subverting of perceived Church excesses.
