Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been considerable public debate in Canada on the merits of proposals to extend coverage under the public earnings - related pension system (the Canada and Quebec Pension Plans or C/QPP) to homemakers. This paper presents an analysis of one such proposal put forward by a Parliamentary Committee in 1983. The analysis considers both the likely costs and the redistributional impact of this homemaker pension proposal, based on a monte carlo lifecycle microsimulation model. The main results are first that the proposal tends to be mildly redistributive from higher to lower lifetime income groups. Secondly, the proposal is of not as much benefit to women as might be expected - it is almost equal in value to men and women. This later conclusion is the result of the fact that the homemaker pension provision was part of a package that also included splitting of pension credits accrued during marriage.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Income Inequality Measurement by : Jacques Silber
Download or read book Handbook of Income Inequality Measurement written by Jacques Silber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amartya Sen "Equality," I spoke the word As if a wedding vow Ah, but I was so much older then, I am younger than that now. Thus sang Bob Dylan in 1964. Approbation of equality varies not only with our age (though it is not absolutely clear in which direction the values may shift over one's life time), but also with the spirit of the times. The 1960s were good years for singing in praise of equality. The spirit of the present times would probably be better reflected by melodies in admiration of the Federal Reserve System. And yet the technical literature on the evaluation and measurement of economic inequality has grown remarkably over the last three decades. Even as actual economic policies (especially in North America and Europe) have tended to move towards focusing on virtues other than the avoidance of economic inequality, the professional literature on assessing and gauging economic inequality has taken quite a jump forward. A great many different problems have been addressed and effectively sorted out, and new problems continue to be posed and analyzed. The Contents: A Review Jacques Silber has done a great service to the subject by producing this collection of admirablyhelpful and illuminating papers on different aspects of the measurement of income inequality. The reach of this collection is quite remarkable. Along with a thorough overview from the editor himself, the major areas in this complex field have been carefully examined and accessibly discussed.

Book Synopsis Consumption, Income and Retirement by : A. Leslie Robb
Download or read book Consumption, Income and Retirement written by A. Leslie Robb and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses unpublished Canadian Family Expenditure Survey data on individuals for 1969-82 to estimate consumption and income age profiles for married-couple families, paying attention to the transition between work and retirement. The paper examines the common assumptions of numerical simulation life-cycle models, namely upward sloping consumption-age profiles and dissaving in retirement, and the assumption that the marginal utility of consumption is independent of the quantity of leisure consumed. The paper also demonstrates the ability of the uncertain lifetime model to rationalize the empirical results and evaluates the suitability of that model as a vehicle for policy simulations.

Book Synopsis Modelling the Lifetime Employment Patterns of Canadians by : W. G. Picot
Download or read book Modelling the Lifetime Employment Patterns of Canadians written by W. G. Picot and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper utilizes data from Statistics Canada's Family History Survey (FHS) to study the relationship between family-related variables and the movement of Canadians -- women in particular -- in and out of employment. These relationships are explored by expressing transition probabilities as a function of variables such as age, sex, marital status, age of youngest child and educational attainment. The transition probabilities are also conditioned upon the state occupied the previous year, and the duration in that state. The goal is to develop an employment submodel of a larger Lifetime Income and Pension Policy Simulation Model (LIPPS). The simulated employment patterns are compared to the actuals from the FHS.

Book Synopsis World Development Report 2019 by : World Bank
Download or read book World Development Report 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.
