Book excerpt: Usually, Cody Cambres had to do ranch work alone in the winter. However, he had a standing order with an employment agency for an employee. One winter he was surprised to get a call saying a man would be on the bus that evening. Alan told Cody that he wanted a job and a warm place to sleep instead of living outdoors as a homeless man. Alan had refused to stay in any mission shelter because of life experiences involving religion. He does enjoy ranch work. In the spring Cody and Alan are checking cows and the calves born that spring when a bullet hits Alan. Later a bullet from the same rifle kills Cody's best horse. Fire begins on Cody's ranch and spreads. Aimi's house burns down and Aimi's husband is murdered by a bullet from the same rifle. Alan helps both Cody and Aimi with ranch work.

Book excerpt: By God's unfailing grace this story unfolded in the lives of an average American family. Nothing was planned nor rehearsed. Some of it was disheartening, some wonderful, but a path I hope that our family will never have to travel again. We experienced an adventure that many families will one day find themselves experiencing, whether they are prepared for it or not. During our travels, people that we met would often tell us that they had never given serious thought to having to take their family, and, leaving all possessions behind, look for a place to start all over again. Few people are prepared to believe that they could find themselves homeless or that their future could remotely resemble what our family went through.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thread weaves through our lives, connecting our past and present into the timelessness of who we are. We find this same connection as we meet ourselves in others, dispelling the illusion that we are separate beings and opening the door to a heaven we long imagined, yet least expected. Through the eyes of his own homelessness, Carl Mazza takes us with him on an intensely personal journey, a bequest from his immigrant forbears, to tell how ordinary people, living through dislocation and chaos, are awakened through human meeting to a primal and gripping spirituality outside institutional religion. The stories in this book are true and powerful; you will be touched and inspired. It is an individual and engaging search for the meaning of belonging which ends in a surprising and compelling view of heaven: where it is and how we can get there. Through an understanding of life experienced as meeting, the author defines a spirituality of powerful possibilities, a soul-force which is too often minimized by organized religion. Drawing from intimate stories over five decades of friendship with persons who have been homeless, he introduces us to people whose lives, though devastated by misfortune and heartbreak, open a vista on an uncharted horizon of meaning for our lives.

It’s a place of history, culture, and some of the most momentous events of the nation. But it’s also a gathering place for some of the city’s homeless. What is life like for the homeless in Harvard Square? Do they have anything to tell people about life? And God? That’s what Harvard student John Frame discovered and shares in Homeless at Harvard. While taking his final course at Harvard, John Frame stepped outside the walls of academia and onto the streets, pursuing a different kind of education with his homeless friends. What he found—in the way of community and how people understand themselves---may surprise you. In this unique book, each of these urban pioneers shares his own story, providing insider perspectives of life as homeless people see it. This heartwarming page-turner shows how John learned with, from, and about his homeless friends—who together tell an unforgettable story—helping readers’ better understand problems outside themselves and that they’re more similar to those on the streets than they may have believed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven. Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear. Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us. Told by the father, but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere was the transition from church-based aid to federal welfare state brought about by the Great Depression more dramatic than in the South. For a moment, the southern Protestant establishment turned to face the suffering that plantation capitalism pushed behind its image of planter's hatsand hoopskirts. When starving white farmers marched into an Arkansas town to demand food for their dying children and when priests turned away hungry widows and orphans because they were no needier than anyone else, southern clergy of both races spoke with one voice to say that they had done allthey could. It was time for a higher power to intervene. They looked to God, and then they looked to Roosevelt. When Roosevelt promised a new deal for the "forgotten man," Americans cheered, and when he took office, churches and private agencies gratefully turned much of the responsibility for welfare and social reform over to the state. Yet, argues historian Allison Collis Greene, Roosevelt's New Dealthreatened plantation capitalism even while bending to it. Black southern churches worked to secure benefits for their own communities while white churches divided over loyalties to Roosevelt and Jim Crow. Frustrated by their failure and fractured by divisions over the New Deal, leaders in the majorwhite Protestant denominations surrendered their moral authority in the South. Although the Protestant establishment retained a central role in American life for decades after the Depression, its slip from power made room for upstart Pentecostals and independent evangelicals, who emphasized personalrather than social salvation.

In heaven or on earth? Such distinctions are false, says Arthur Paul Boers. We can't experience God in heaven without loving the needy on earth. Nor can we truly love the needy on earth if not empowered by God in heaven.
