As settlers moved into the new lands, they brought with them clear impressions of the houses they formerly had lived in, and as soon as their economic status permitted, they erected new homes comparable to those left behind. Among the first dwellings erected by the early settlers were log cabins. As fascinating and romantic as these are to many people today, they are not being considered in this book because our theme is artistic architectural design, not mere housing. It should be pointed out, however, that numerous log cabins and log houses are to be found in Indiana today. Contrary to popular belief, all of the dwellings erected by the first settlers were not necessarily of log construction, nor were log cabins exclusively used at any one time. While it is true that they represent the typical home of the pioneer who settled in a wooded area, they were erected in different parts of the state at different times, some fairly late in the nineteenth century. In many early communities log houses stood beside or not far from frame and brick buildings, only to be replaced by more stately domiciles when the owners could afford something better. When, for instance, the Lincoln family was living in the humblest sort of log cabin in Spencer County (1816 18 there were many fine residences in southern Indiana. At twenty - six he married. His life was like that of his class, but the man was no ordinary peasant. He was fond of reading and of thought. Religious feeling was much ex cited in the country during his early manhood, and Rapp, a devout believer, studied his Bible with the zeal charac teristic of his race. He found in it a very different scheme of life from that in which he was placed. He was a literalist, and reached and surpassed the conclusions that literalists hold to-day. The lethargy of the estab lished church was in sharp contrast with the activity of the Apostles. Christ might come at any moment, yet men were living as if there were no Christ. He longed for a return to the former things, for the close union of Christian fellowship intent only upon the eternal veri ties. He talked to others and found believers. At thirty he began to preach in his own house. His congregation, when it attracted notice, was denounced as separatists and persecuted by the clergy with the usual result. Yet there was nothing dangerous in their creed. Submission to the authorities was a principal tenet; all they asked was the right of private judgment and freedom to wor ship as they chose. Within six years three hundred fami lies had become adherents of Rapp, and, after ten years of waiting, seeing no prospect of peace or toleration, they determined to go to America. In 1803 George Rapp, his son John and two others, having left the church in charge of Frederick Rapp, an adopted son, landed at Baltimore. Appar ently preferring free soil, the family left its slaves behind and moved into Indiana Territory shortly after it was created in 1800. They settled a few miles north of Harrison, Ohio Indiana, just within the line. There John Johnson grew up, met Sarah Purse], daughter of Peter Purse], of Brookville, and married her about 1818. A daughter was born to them in 1819. In 1818 the central section Of Indiana was cleared of Indian title, and the savages were allowed three years in which to move out. SO in 1821 this New Purchase was Opened for settlement. At the same time the state legislature, meeting at Corydon, had created a commission to locate a new capital closer to the geographical center of the new state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1912, Vol. 8 The Indianians who were but little past middle age in 1860, could recall not only these strange and curious beginnings, but also the denials, the hardships and sufferings, not to say the tragedies, of life, in the pioneer Indiana settlements. Just one hundred years ago this year occurred the massacre in Pigeon Roost Settlement, not far from the early home of the Englishes in Scott county. When Bingham and Doughty of this city pub lished John B. Dillon's well-known History of Indiana in 1859, Zebulun Collings, a survivor of the massacre, was still alive, from whose lips the historian had some account of the conditions in the country at the time of the tragedy. I cannot here recount the story of these trials. I merely refer to them to indicate by what hardships the soldiers of civilization were founding our young comonwealth, and how'recent these events must have seemed to the older men when the boys of '61 were entering upon their struggle for the Union.
