Each in-service packet takes approximately one hour to complete and fully meets the Medicare in-service training requirements. As aides need training, you can make as many copies as you want - there's no restriction when used with aides assigned from your office location. Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: * Define aphasia * List four measures to facilitate communication in patients with aphasia * List three disease conditions that may cause aphasia, and * Name three key points to consider in providing care. OVERVIEW According to statistics, there are about 80,000 new cases of aphasia in the United States every year. Over a million people in the US currently have some degree of aphasia. While there are many causes of aphasia, by far the most frequent is cerebrovascular accident (CVA). It is a very common diagnosis for patients receiving homecare services, particularly for patients who need home health aide services. Therefore, it is very important that home health aides understand the basic principles of working with patients with aphasia. The purpose of this in-service is to provide general information about aphasia and key points to consider in providing care for affected patients.

Each in-service packet takes approximately one hour to complete and fully meets the Medicare in-service training requirements. As aides need training, you can make as many copies as you want - there's no restriction when used with aides assigned from your office location. Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Describe three actions he or she can perform that can help heal a pressure ulcer. Explain two observations about a patient with a pressure ulcer to report to the nurse. IIdentify two measures to prevent the development of a pressure ulcer. OVERVIEW Unfortunately, there is a three to 17 percent incidence of pressure ulcers in elderly patients. Those patients can experience extreme pain, social isolation, and complications, such as infection of the bone or blood, along with a higher mortality rate. Overall, in the United States the cost for the treatment of pressure ulcers ranges from $9.1 to $11.6 billion per year. The best plan for patients in the home setting is to provide care that helps to prevent the development of pressure ulcers. However, some patients are admitted with a pressure ulcer and others, in spite of good care, can develop one. That's when every member of the homecare team, including home health aides, can play a role in treatment. Most existing training on pressure ulcer generally targets practitioners. This lesson focuses on instructing home health aides, new or experienced, on care of the patient with a pressure ulcer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.
