Book Synopsis Ways of Going Home by : Alejandro Zambra
Download or read book Ways of Going Home written by Alejandro Zambra and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alejandro Zambra's Ways of Going Home begins with an earthquake, seen through the eyes of an unnamed nine-year-old boy who lives in an undistinguished middleclass housing development in a suburb of Santiago, Chile. When the neighbors camp out overnight, the protagonist gets his first glimpse of Claudia, an older girl who asks him to spy on her uncle Raúl. In the second section, the protagonist is the writer of the story begun in the first section. His father is a man of few words who claims to be apolitical but who quietly sympathized—to what degree, the author isn't sure—with the Pinochet regime. His reflections on the progress of the novel and on his own life—which is strikingly similar to the life of his novel's protagonist—expose the raw suture of fiction and reality. Ways of Going Home switches between author and character, past and present, reflecting with melancholy and rage on the history of a nation and on a generation born too late—the generation which, as the author-narrator puts it, learned to read and write while their parents became accomplices or victims. It is the most personal novel to date from Zambra, the most important Chilean author since Roberto Bolaño.

Book excerpt: "This book will provide the first comprehensive and critical overview of Associated American Artists (AAA), the commercial enterprise best known as the publisher of prints by Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. It addresses not only AAA's storied involvement in the sale of American prints via mail-order catalogue, but also its ongoing promotion of American art in a range of mediums over six decades. Through aggressive marketing of studio prints, reproductions of art, ceramics and textiles, and associations with corporate advertisers, AAA sought to bring "original" American art over the threshold of every American home"--

Download or read book Home Authors and Home Artists written by Washington Irving and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Authors and Home Artists: American Scenery, Art, and Literature That American artists have ample scope for the development of genius, in the department of landscape painting, is a truism too self-evident to need any argumentative dissertations. A very laudable degree of success in the cultivation of this genius, is also evident in man of our private drawing-rooms, as well as public exhibitions. Believing that ample material thus exists Cor illustrating the picturesque beauties of American landscape, the publisher has ventured to undertake this volume as an experiment, to ascertain bow far the taste of our people may warrant the production of home-manufactured presentation-books, and how far we can successfully compete with those from abroad. In the higher range of ornamental books of this class, such as are sought for by our liberal, gift-giving people, we have heretofore depended almost exclusively upon our importations from Europe. It is not to be pretended that this volume, even in its department, has reached the highest degree of excellence. Book Synopsis The Lost Arts of Hearth and Home by : Ken Albala
Download or read book The Lost Arts of Hearth and Home written by Ken Albala and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Arts of Hearth and Home is not about extreme, off-the-grid living. It’s for city and suburban dwellers with day jobs: people who love to cook, love fresh natural ingredients, and old techniques for preservation; people who like doing things themselves with a needle and thread, garden hoe, or manual saw. Ken Albala and Rosanna Nafziger Henderson spread the spirit of antiquated self-sufficiency throughout the household. They offer projects that are decidedly unplugged and a little daring, including: * Home building projects like rooftop food dehydrators and wood-burning ovens * Homemaking essentials, from sewing and quilting to rug braiding and soap making * The wonders of grain: making croissants by hand, sprouting grains, and baking bread * Adventures with meat: pickled pig’s feet, homemade liverwurst, and celery-cured salami Intended for industrious cooks and crafters who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, The Lost Arts of Hearth and Home will teach you the history and how-to on projects for every facet of your home, all without the electric toys that take away from the experience of making things by hand.
