Book excerpt: Physiological and functional maturity relationships permit verification of the hypothesis about segregation of natural population of lobster into two stock units associated with north and south sides of the archipelago. Results indicate that length-maturity relationships are homogeneous inside each stock unit but different between the two areas. Lengths attained at 50% physiological maturity are 84 mm and 79 mm on the north and south sides, respectively, and those attained at 50% functional maturity are 85 mm and 79 mm. Actual legal length of 76 mm allows very weak protection to females capable of extruding eggs. We observe that only 9% of the females that have been recruited to the fishery in the previous year, are mature in a sampling area located on the north side, and 17% in another area located on the south side. Commercial landings contain 83% of pre-pubertal, pubertal or adult I females that have not yet extruded eggs, compared with 74% on the south side. The relative scarcity of bigger males after exploitation seems to limit fertilization of females of commercial size. Thus the maximum rate of berried females in natural populations is below 30%; this rate decreases and attains zero at larger sizes instead of stabilizing around theoretical rate of 50%.
