Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Dryden: The Poet, the Dramatist, the Critic Has - the importance of his influence. It is this nice ques tion of influence that I wish to investigate first, in relation to what I may call the filjmternawrymglmipwta tor, that is, in our history, we to say that poets like Shakespeare and Milton 'were without influence? Certainly not, but in fluence, in the sense in which we can cope with the term, is something more limited. The dis proportion between Shakespeare and his imme diate followers, among the dramatists, is so great that the influence of Shakespeare is a triflingthing in comparison with Shakespeare himself; and as for Milton, that was so peculiar a genius that although he had plenty of mimics during the eighteenth century, he can hardly be said to have any followers. For influence, as Dryden had influence, a poet must not be so great as to overshadow all followers. Dryden was followed' by Pope, and a century later, by Samuel John son; borh men of great original genius, who developed the medium left them by Dryden, in ways which cast honour both on them and on him. It should seem then no paradox to say that Dryden was the great influence upon English verse that he was, because he was not too great to have any influence at all. He was neither the consummate poet of earlier times, nor the eccen tric poet of later. He was happy both in his predecessors and in his successors. A hundred years rs a long time for the stamp of one man to remain upon a literature 5 poets' influence and reputation cannot last so long in our days; and 6' that makes Dryden a central, a typical figurein English letters. He is in himself the Malherbe, the Boileau, the Corneille and almost the Moliere (almost, because Congreve refined and surpassed him in comedy) of the seventeenth century in England; and to him, as much as to any indi vidual, we owe our civilisation. Download or read book Dharmasutras written by Patrick Olivelle and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dharmasutras are the four surviving works of the ancient Indian expert tradition on the subject of dharma, or the rules of behavior a community recognizes as binding on its members. Written in a pithy and aphoristic style and representing the culmination of a long tradition of scholarship, the Dharmasutras record intense disputes and divergent views on a wide variety of religious and social issues. These unique documents give us a glimpse of how people, especially Brahmin males, were ideally expected to live their lives within an ordered and hierarchically arranged society. In this first English translation of these documents for over a century, Patrick Olivelle uses the same lucid and elegant style of his award-winning translation of the Upanisads and incorporates the most recent scholarship on ancient Indian law, society and religion. The fresh editions of the Sanskrit texts present new manuscript material, variants recorded in medieval commentaries and legal digests, and emendations suggested by philologists.

Book Synopsis The Poems of T. S. Eliot Volume II by : T. S. Eliot
Download or read book The Poems of T. S. Eliot Volume II written by T. S. Eliot and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poems of T. S. Eliot is the authoritative edition of one of our greatest poets, scrupulously edited by Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue. It provides, for the first time, a fully scrutinized text of Eliot's poems, carefully restoring accidental omissions and removing textual errors that have crept in over the full century in which Eliot has been so frequently printed and reprinted. The edition also presents many poems from Eliot's youth which were published only decades later, as well as others that saw only private circulation in his lifetime, of which dozens are collected for the first time. To accompany Eliot's poems, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the creative activity that came to constitute each poem, calling upon drafts, correspondence and other original materials to provide a vivid account of the poet's working processes, his reading, his influences and his revisions. The first volume respects Eliot's decisions by opening with his Collected Poems 1909-1962 in the form in which he issued it, shortly before his death fifty years ago. There follow in this first volume the uncollected poems from his youth that he had chosen to publish, along with such other poems as could be considered suitable for publication. The second volume opens with the two books of poems of other kinds that he issued, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and his translation of Perse's Anabase, moving then to verses privately circulated as informal or improper or clubmanlike. Each of these sections is accompanied by its respective commentary, and then, pertaining to the entire edition, there is a comprehensive textual history recording variants both manuscript and published. The Poems of T. S. Eliot is a work of enlightening scholarship that will delight and inform all those who read Eliot for pleasure, as well as all those who read with pleasure and for study. Here are a new accuracy and an unparalleled insight into the marvels and landmarks from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Waste Land through to Four Quartets

Book excerpt: Homage to Mistress Bradstreet, long poem by John Berryman, written in 1948–53 and published in 1956. Noted for its intensity, it is a tribute to colonial poet Anne Bradstreet that also reveals much about the author. The poem examines the tension between Bradstreet’s personal life and her artistic life, concluding in a spirit of fatalism. It shows throughout a loving and intimate grasp of the details of American history. The work primarily examines creative repression, religious apostasy, and the temptation to adultery.

Book Synopsis Language, Texts, and Society by : Patrick Olivelle
Download or read book Language, Texts, and Society written by Patrick Olivelle and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together the research papers of Patrick Olivelle, published over a period of about ten years. The unifying theme of these studies is the search for historical context and developments hidden within words and texts. Words – and the cultural history represented by words – that scholars often take for granted as having a continuous and long history are often new and even neologisms, and thus provide important clues to cultural and religious innovations. Olivelle’s book on the Asramas, as well as the short pieces included in this volume, such as those on ananda and dharma, seek to see cultural innovation and historical changes within the changing semantic fields of key terms. Closer examination of numerous Sanskrit terms taken for granted as central to ‘Hinduism’ provide similar results. Indian texts have often been studied in the past as disincarnate realities providing information on an ahistorical and unchanging culture. This volume is a small contribution towards correcting that method of textual study.
Download or read book Dharma written by Patrick Olivelle and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly book devoted to the study of the term dharma with in the broad scope of Indian cultural and religious history. Most generalizations about Indian culture and religion upon close scrutiny turn out to be inaccurate. An exception undoubtedly is the term dharma. This term and the notions underlying it clearly constitute the most central feature of Indian civilization down the centuries, irrespective of linguistic, sectarian, or regional differences. The nineteen papers included in this collection deal with many significant historical manifestations of the term dharma. These studies by some of the leading scholars in the respective fields will both present a more nuanced picture of the semantic history of dharma by putting contours onto the flat landscape we have inherited and spur further studies of this concept so central for understanding the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent.
