Book Synopsis Holy Literary License by : Robert Flynn
Download or read book Holy Literary License written by Robert Flynn and published by Wings Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning western novelist with decidedly liberal political leanings writes a spiritual autobiography unlike any other. The author grew up in a small west Texas town, attended seminary, became a war correspondent in Vietnam, and taught creative writing and literature for 40 years at Trinity University in San Antonio. With a deep sense of the irony of his project, he sets out to explain how the Bible came to be, delving into historical misconceptions, errors in translation, political and cultural biases, as well as the editorial failings of the Bible's many authors -- and yet, he arrives at a place of ultimate faith.

Download or read book Banned in Berlin written by Gary D. Stark and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial Germany's governing elite frequently sought to censor literature that threatened established political, social, religious, and moral norms in the name of public peace, order, and security. It claimed and exercised a prerogative to intervene in literary life that was broader than that of its Western neighbors, but still not broad enough to prevent the literary community from challenging and subverting many of the social norms the state was most determined to defend. This study is the first systematic analysis in any language of state censorship of literature and theater in imperial Germany (1871-1918). To assess the role that formal state controls played in German literary and political life during this period, it examines the intent, function, contested legal basis, institutions, and everyday operations of literary censorship as well as its effectiveness and its impact on authors, publishers, and theater directors.

Download or read book A Fire to Light Our Tongues written by Elizabeth Joan Dell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fire to Light Our Tongues: Texas Writers on Spirituality brings together the works of writers in Texas. The title is taken, with permission, from Naomi Shihab Nye’s introduction to Salting the Ocean: 100 Poems by Young Poets, where she states the role of poetry serves as “a fire to light our tongues.” This view describes the role that creative writers, encountering the challenges of this past decade, face as they grapple with shifting views of spirituality. While the project started before COVID-19, given the current worldwide pandemic, a book of creative work responding to writers’ spirituality could not be more timely. This anthology offers readers creative works by Texas writers as they wrestle with evolving systems of belief or nonbelief.
