Here, I present multi-proxy records from sediments at three lakes in the northeastern United States and northwestern China to investigate the nature of Holocene climate change and climate variability. Chapter 1 presents a 35-year resolution calcite delta18O record for the last 12 ka (1ka=1000 cal yr BP) from Lake Grinnell in northern New Jersey. The record suggests that the delta18O shift from a stable state to a steadily decreasing trend at 5.8 ka reflects a non-linear response of atmospheric circulation to the gradual decrease in insolation, and that a dominant frequency shift in solar forcing might have caused the shift of centennial-scale climate oscillations in amplitude and frequency. Chapter 2 provides a 2-year resolution calcite delta18O record from a freeze-core at White Lake in northern New Jersey. The delta 18O changes, together with the published paleosalinity reconstructions from Chesapeake Bay, show a dry climate at 1780-1850, a wet climate at 1850-1920, and ~20-year moisture oscillations after 1920. Regional atmospheric circulation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may control the observed moisture variations. Anthropogenic global warming could be responsible for the increased moisture variability since 1920. Chapter 3 presents high-resolution lake-level records for the last 8 ka from Hurleg Lake on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Consistent with the East Asian and Indian monsoon reconstructions, the data show a dry and highly variable climate from 7.8 to 1 ka and a stable and wet climate after1 ka. Six dry intervals at 7.6-7.2 ka, 6.2-5.9 ka, 5.3-4.9 ka, 4.4-3.8 ka, 2.7-2.4 ka and 1.7-1.1 ka have also been detected. Insolation, solar variations, and/or oceanic and atmospheric circulations are responsible for the monsoon changes and millennial-scale variability. Chapter 4 provides a centennial-scale lake-level record for the past 1 ka at Hurleg Lake. The opposite moisture pattern between the Qaidam Basin and surrounding mountains implies that topography could be an important factor in controlling regional moisture patterns through mediating rising and subsidence air masses in this topographically-complex region. The 200-year moisture oscillations were possibly caused by change in solar forcing.

Abstract: Holocene hydrological changes in regions influenced by the mid-latitude westerly and the tropical/subtropical Asian monsoon differ from each other. The arid/semi-arid northeastern Tibetan Plateau, lying in between, is very sensitive to climatic changes. It thus becomes a climatologically important region to disentangle the interactions between the two circulations. Yet, limited high-quality Holocene paleoclimatic reconstructions are available in this region. This thesis presents multi-biomarker proxy records from lakes in the Qaidam Basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau to investigate the nature of Holocene climate variability. Firstly, late-Holocene paired alkenone-based temperature (U_37 DEGREESK'' ) and moisture (%C37:4) records from Lake Gahai and Lake Sugan were reconstructed. Paired temperature and moisture records confirm the warm-dry (e.g. Medieval Warm Period) and cold-wet (e.g. Little Ice Age) periods on the arid northeastern Tibetan Plateau over the late Holocene, opposite to the warm-wet and cold-dry association in Asian monsoonal regions. The records also suggest substantially warmer and drier conditions during the Medieval Warm Period than the current warm period. Further, a possible link between solar forcing and natural climate variability (both temperature and moisture) during the late Holocene is found on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. This thesis also studied the late-Holocene grain size-based dust storm history from Lake Gahai to encode possible mechanism of dust storm interacting with hydrological parameters. Intensified dust storm events were identified in periods of 500 BC to 250 BC, 50 BC to AD 250 and AD 1100 to present. In multi-centennial to millennial scales, dust storm events might be caused by the intensified wind induced by strong westerlies or/and Asian winter monsoon. In multi-decadal to centennial scales, moisture and vegetation coverage might have impacted on the dust storm intensity and frequency. Further, Holocene lake level history of Lake Gahai was reconstructed by multiple n-alkane and alkenone proxies. Combined biomarker results provide unambiguous evidence of relatively low lake level at 7-2 ka, probably lowest at 6 ka. Considering the chronological uncertainty, Holocene lake level changes in this marginal region thus display a different pattern from either of the core regions dominated by the westerlies (anti-phase) and the Asian summer monsoon (out-of-phase). The temperature-induced evaporation in the arid marginal region could significantly affect regional hydrological balance, resulting in the discrepancy with the long-term decreasing trend in precipitation in Asian monsoon-dominated regions. Lastly, n-fatty acid δD variation from Lake Hurleg over the past 10.5 ka was investigated. The C26 δD and C16 δD values can indicate water δD changes in terrestrial and aquatic sources, respectively. The heavier C26 δD values during cold and wet conditions suggest that terrestrial water δD changes might be caused by factors other than temperature and moisture, such as glacial melted water input and vegetation type change. The difference between C16 δD and C26 δD was used as an indicator of evaporation at the lake surface. At millennial timescale, less evaporation occurred during cold-wet periods in this region. Book excerpt: With growing concerns over future climate change, the need to understand past climate variability has become an important topic of research. In this thesis, a gap in knowledge of the transition to modern climatic conditions during the mid-Holocene is identified and addressed. Mid-Holocene atmospheric moisture availability has been reconstructed from five raised mires (Kortlandamossen, Tore Hill Moss, Raeburn Flow, Gällseredsmossen, and Misten Bog) located on geographical and climatological gradients across northwest Europe. In this thesis, a new testate amoebae-based palaeohydrological transfer function for south-central Sweden and an improved indicator-weighted Hydroclimatic Index (HCI) were created in order to establish univariate measures of mid-Holocene bog surface wetness (BSW). Together with detrended correspondence analysis, the HCI and testate amoebae transfer function were applied to palaeoecological data from the five bogs, in order to reconstruct climatic variability across northwest Europe from c. 9000 before present (BP) until c. 3500 BP. A series of wet and dry excursions of the bog surfaces were identified on all five bogs. These BSW changes were compared with palaeoclimatic evidence from the wider literature on a local, regional, continental and hemispheric scale. Throughout the early- to mid-Holocene, increased BSW on Misten Bog closely coincided with episodes of reduced SST in the North Atlantic. A similar link was established between SST and BSW on Raeburn Flow and Gällseredsmossen, following the end of the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM). The results from the analysis demonstrate that the HTM occurred asynchronously across northwest Europe. Reconstructions from all five bogs, except Misten Bog, showed a prolonged dry phase on the bog surface starting prior to c. 7000 BP. The end of the HTM occurred between c. 5600 BP and c. 4800 BP on all sites except Kortlandamossen, where regional environmental mechanisms delayed the end of the HTM. A climatic boundary at the end of the HTM was detected around 57oN, with sites south of 57oN experiencing the termination between c. 5600 BP and c. 5300, while it occurred between c. 4800 BP and c. 4400 BP on the sites north of this latitude. The only period when all five sites displayed similar BSW changes was between c. 4400 BP and c. 4000 BP, a period of global climatic change. A major wetting on the bogs during this time coincided with increased BSW and glacial advances across Europe as well as high lake levels in France and Switzerland.
