Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A disquieting question persists: “What if I should die before I feel life is full?” It is deeply personal, hauntingly spiritual. It’s a challenge to re-visit beliefs and the dynamics of faith, love, hope. Exploration brings a fresh encounter: the human and spiritual elements of “self.” These are not contending identities; each supplies unique initiatives for life’s fullness. Both need nurturing; either can be ignored. Spiritual experience makes promise and mystery real; this enhances earthly achievements. These Meditations focus on spiritual vitality—especially for seniors. They reach beyond a biological birth-death time-frame. They touch on continuity beyond earth-time. God’s initiatives enrich the spiritual self—grace energizes faith. This generates and motivates people to offer acts of love. Love fosters grander character and perspective, wholesome relationships, healing for the heart-hungry/heart-broken. The outcome: a healthier self experiencing joy and peace—wholeness for life beyond death. Richard Smyth’s missionary service in India was designated “church development.” The Indian church prepared for autonomy, to assure continuity of American mission initiatives. “Development” involved identifying and implementing specific ministries. The challenge: match peoples’ needs with relevant opportunities. This affected worship/activity in local congregations as well as their outreach efforts. The goal: design culturally valid strategies, structures and services for the church’s mission, organization, workers. An emphasis was proper leadership and resources. He built up a multi-cultural congregation in one of New Delhi’s new suburban areas. This housed government, business and military personnel called to national offices. The congregation’s focus: build strong fellowship ties and initiate outreach services in the community. This pattern was used for nation-wide training programs by denominational and para-church groups. The last 15 years expanded the ministry to facilitate similar transitions by mission institutions in 14 Asia/Pacific nations. Richard and Sylvia Smyth retired in 1998; they reside in Asheville, North Carolina. Their family of 5 Indian children and spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren live in New Delhi, Manila, Dubai and Stockholm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holiness! It must be the goal of every Christian who is serious about their relationship with God in the here and now and the blessed hope of seeing Him then in the hereafter and throughout eternity. Why are we so convinced of this? Because we believe the Word of God when it says, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). Repeat: without holiness, no man shall see the Lord. Can it be any plainer than that? It's a frightening thought, especially in today's society where most of us are far from living a holy lifestyle. This may be because we hope God will judge us all on the curve, but it's probably because of an unfounded teaching among many Christians that simple belief in Christ's death and resurrection qualifies them as holy in the sight of God-no further action required; they are eternally secure. This erroneous teaching could cost souls their heavenly rewards, if not their eternity with Christ. In Holiness we try to discount and disprove that false teaching and lay the groundwork (according to our understanding of God's Word) for the model walk before God, a walk that ensures we will see God when this current reality ends but also our only real hope in these troubled times that, we believe, are a prelude to the Great Tribulation, the end of time, and the return of Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.W. Tozer maintained that a theologian’s message must be ‘both timeless and timely’, a sentiment borne out in the fact that his writing on worship still acts as an urgent warning today. Tozer is primarily concerned with the loss of the concept of ‘majesty’ from the popular mind and more importantly from the thinking of the church. He sees the church as having surrendered her once lofty concept of God – not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge. With this comes a further loss of religious awe and a sense of the divine presence, of an appropriate spirit of worship and of our ability to withdraw inwardly to meet God in adoring silence. Tozer addresses this problem, to go back to the causes of the decline and to understand and correct the errors that have given rise to our devotional poverty. ‘It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate,’ he tells us. What is needed is a restoration of our knowledge of the holy.

Book excerpt: In Lives of the Prophets: The Illustrations to Hafiz-i Abru’s “Assembly of Chronicles” Mohamad Reza Ghiasian analyses two extant copies of the Majmaʿ al-tawarikh produced for the Timurid ruler Shahrukh (r. 1405–1447). The first manuscript is kept in Topkapı Palace and the second is widely dispersed. Codicological analysis of these manuscripts not only allows a better understanding of Hafiz-i Abru’s contributions to rewriting earlier history, but has served to identify the existence of a previously unrecognised copy of the Jamiʿ al-tawarikh produced at Rashid al-Din’s scriptorium. Through a meticulous close reading of both text and image, Mohamad Reza Ghiasian convincingly proves that numerous paintings of the dispersed manuscript were painted over the text before its dispersal in the early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The Bible uses the word Christian to describe followers of Jesus a grand total of three times. But there's another identifier that fills the pages of the New Testament--a word we've mistakenly reserved for the halo-wearing elite, losing something profound in the process. Saints. Wrapped in this ancient word is a divine invitation to discover who God created you to be and awaken to the life you were meant to know. Using Scripture and stories from his own experience, Addison Bevere makes a compelling case that the life you desire is found in the mystery of this sacred identity. If you want to exchange lifeless religion for the wonder of following Jesus, this book will spur you onward in your journey. ****** "In Saints: Becoming More Than 'Christians,' Addison will encourage you to stop fighting for victory and start living from the victorious destiny we already have through Jesus."--Christine Caine, bestselling author and founder of A21 and Propel Women "Saints is a clarion call to look past ourselves and to the only one who offers us the good life."--Kyle Idleman, senior pastor of Southeast Christian Church and author of Not a Fan and Don't Give Up "All I can say is 'Wow'! This 'Wow' speaks to the depth of knowledge, strength of wisdom, and keen insight found in Saints. It's obvious God has given Addison a voice, one that calls all generations to a higher level of living. As a father and fellow minister, I couldn't be prouder."--John Bevere, bestselling author and cofounder of Messenger International "While the word Christian seems to mean a lot of things to a lot of people, Saints calls us back to following our one and only, Jesus Christ."--Chris Hodges, senior pastor of Church of the Highlands and author of The Daniel Dilemma and What's Next? "Addison encourages us to put on our identity as a saint and live in a relationship with Jesus. Saints is an authentic look at what faith can be."--Bob Goff, New York Times bestselling author of Love Does and Everybody, Always "In a time when so many young men are deconstructing the sacred, Addison has leaned into it. I am challenged, corrected, and lifted by Saints."--Lisa Bevere, New York Times bestselling author and ridiculously proud mother "Addison Bevere has a unique voice in this generation. His new book is a force to be reckoned with in a world that misplaces its identity."--Heather Lindsey, author, speaker, and founder of Pinky Promise

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venetian artist Carlo Crivelli (c. 1430–1495) is a painter whose individuality of style and mastery of powerful line have fascinated many, but whose life and art have remained enigmatic. This absorbing book, drawing on extensive research in Venice and the Marches, the region of central Italy that Crivelli dominated artistically from 1468 until his death, examines his paintings in depth and traces the fundamental influences of the Vivarini, of Squarcione and Mantegna, and later of Flemish art. Ronald Lightbown, eminent historian of Italian Renaissance art, interweaves stylistic and iconographical analysis of Crivelli’s work with historical and cultural background. The author uncovers the reasons that led patrons to choose the saints that figured in Crivelli’s altarpieces, discusses the initiations of new cults and the devising of an iconography for them, and demonstrates Crivelli’s independence from clerical dictation in the symbolism of his still-life pictures.

Why do so many Americans claim that they pray every day, but when we actually see someone praying outside of a formal religious service we tend to view it as being eccentric or bizarre? Acclaimed author Mitch Finley takes a thoughtful look at how each major faith tradition incorporates prayer into daily life. Christian sacraments, Jewish holy days, Muslim daily prayer, "mindfulness" in Buddhism, and Hindu rituals are just some of the practices Finley examines. Exploring how people of many faiths pray will help you better understand and enhance your own prayer practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucifixion of Christ has been richly portrayed by countless artists for hundreds of years, but it was European Renaissance styles and painters such as Kurz, Benjamin West and John Valentine Haidt that first informed American artists of the possibilities for depicting the crucifixion. This work features artists living and working in America from the mid-18th to the 21st century who depicted the crucifixion of Christ in their artwork. The 19th century saw painters like Julian Russell Story, John Singer Sargent, Vassili Verestchagin and Fred Holland break from the Renaissance tradition of the 18th century to begin a religious art revolution. The 20th century saw painters like Thomas Eakins and George Bellows continuing the traditions of the 19th until the Realist style became dominant, which lasted until the latter part of the century and the rise of Abstract Expressionism and a number of experimental styles such as Op, Pop, and Super-realism.

Book excerpt: The Blueprint for Overcoming Darkness and Living in God’s Light... Our world unravels more each day. It feels as if we’re drowning in a sea churning with greed, violence, and lust. As darkness advances, hope dims. Yet within that reality, God gives us a profound mandate... Be Light Light has always defined God and His followers. At creation, God spoke light into existence. Jesus is the light of the world. And we are born to absorb and then reflect God’s light. In Be Light Samuel Rodriguez—described by Fox News and CNN as “America’s most influential Latino Evangelical leader”—provides a blueprint for confronting darkness in every realm of our lives. He issues a clarion call for individual believers and the church to rise up and once again be that bright city on a hill that doesn’t simply expose the invading darkness, but overcomes it with God’s blazing light. “When we share the message of Jesus, the candles of others are lit and more and more darkness is driven out of our world. Our prayer is that this excellent book will inspire millions—including you—to Be Light.” —Roma Downey, producer and actress
