Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving personal memoir of Mississippi in the 1920s and the bitter harvest of racial repression. As the story opens, six-year-old Buster Briggs boards a Pullman car headed south over the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and we embark with him on what will become his journey from childhood into adolescence. Bus Briggs is a white boy from Indiana who spends his summers and Christmases at his grandparents' Mississippi homeplace—Riverside. Travel with him on this journey of discovery. Join Bus and his cousins as they string popcorn and chinaberries for the yule tree, savor ice cream made from rare Mississippi snow, eat cornbread crumbled in buttermilk, enjoy all-day suckers and dill pickles at the general store. Meet the extended family that lives at Riverside—Buster's grandparents Mammy and Pappy, his aunt Allie and uncle Cally, and his cousins—as well as their black neighbor Mattie Riley and her son Leroy. At the heart of this story lies Buster's strong and sustaining friendship with Leroy. From his Pullman window, Buster first sees Leroy sitting on a stile near Riverside waving at the passing train. Leroy soon becomes Buster's fellow explorer, fishing instructor, and best friend. Before Leroy waves goodbye to Buster's departing train for the last time, an unbreakable bond is formed with the gift of a pocketknife—and what happens because of that gift. Even so, the racial prejudices of the time dictate that the paths of their lives diverge. Wallace Briggs set out to write a memoir of his family and of his own youth, but he has shaped a story that is far more than a personal recollection. Its themes are among the most powerful in literature—love and death, family dynamics, the innocence and selfishness of childhood, the struggle with cultural mores. What Briggs has produced is a work of great power and many pleasures, as finely constructed as a novel or stage play. His prose is crisp, cool, and sweet, like a slice of the watermelon chilling in the artesian well-water at Riverside.

Book excerpt: Lost innocence. Betrayal. Smalltown secrets. It all adds up to necessary lies. It always starts with the loss of innocence. Life had plenty to offer beautiful seventeen-year-old Cliffie Flowers in 1953 backwoods Georgia before she got pregnant by a local lothario whose conquests also included her sister. Fearing the disappointment of her adoring father, Cliffie lies to conceal her downfall as the golden girl who might have been the hope of her poor family. But her deception leads to far worse trouble. "Janice Daugharty is a born story-teller. Her voice is a finely honed 'Southern' voice that is warm, vibrant, and original; her characters seem to leap from the page, fully imagined in a sentence or two. Best of all, her fiction is rich with surprises. Each story is like a wild, improvised ride that takes us to an unexpected destination." --Joyce Carol Oates "Janice Daugharty is a natural-born writer." --Pat Conroy "Daugharty once again has succeeded in creating a suspenseful, well-written narrative around an unusual plot line." --Library Journal Janice Daugharty's 1997 novel, EARL IN THE YELLOW SHIRT (HarperCollins) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. When Moss Tucker smells danger, he shoots it. When he needs shelter, he grabs it. And when he wants a woman’s touch, he buys it. But then he sees Amanda Boone’s sparkling azure eyes—an innocent beauty like her would never get involved with a law-breaking man like him. Chestnut-haired Amanda tries to keep her gaze on the vast frontier that flashes past her train window—but it keeps straying to the buckskin-clad stranger. Every inch of him is virile and strong. She knows it’s wrong to even think of his muscular arms crushing her soft curves in a fierce embrace. Yet she vows that before the trip is over he will be the one to tame her savage desire with his wild and lawless love. “Bittner’s characters spring to life . . . Extraordinary for the depth of emotion with which they are portrayed.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Gypsy, Horsemen, Trumps and Thieves, I have taken three real-life stories and woven them into one book. The book starts out on a poor man's farm just outside Winchester, Kentucky, in September 1953. A fifteen-year-old boy Dewey "Pappy" Beauchamp puts all his faith in a ten-month-old black thoroughbred colt named Mountain Cat. The colt is all Dewey Beauchamp has to work with and hold onto. The majority of the book takes place from May 1999 through November 1999. Instead of separating the book by chapters, I used the days of the calendar to track the story. In the horse racing world, things can change in a heartbeat. You learn to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. It is not the life for the faint of heart. A wise man told me when I first started racing horses, "Son, there is a hell of a lot more bad luck, then there is good luck in the race horse business." He was right, but when good luck shows up, it's contagious. Enjoy the story, my friends. It has been written and lived with a Texas heartbeat. I would personally like to thank Jesus for all my blessings and his saving grace. I would have been lost without it. God bless, America!

Book excerpt: The sound and the fury… On a dark night in Pennsylvania, a jazz legend met his death. But now, in the heat and light of Las Vegas, the sound of Clifford Brown’s soaring trumpet is coming back to life. Because a man named Evan Horne, who knows all about jazz and pain, is unraveling a puzzle that reaches back forty years to Brown’s last hours—and that has already gotten one person killed. Horne was called to Las Vegas to authenticate some recordings purported to be the lost tapes of Clifford Brown. But when a murder interrupts his listening session, Horne becomes the key player in a dangerous duet. Carrying a worn old trumpet that may have belonged to Clifford Brown himself, Horne is pursuing the truth behind an audiotape that may be worth a fortune, may be a hoax, and may be just one haunting melody in a killer’s murderous obsession… Praise for THE SOUND OF THE TRUMPET: “Well written, plausible, and down to earth; recommended.” —Library Journal “Fascinating insider information on various aspects of the jazz world. A must for jazz fans, who will appreciate Moody’s grasp of the music.” —Booklist “When Bill Moody writes about dead jazz musicians, you can hear the blue notes bouncing off the walls.” —The New York Times Book Review “Moody writes beautifully…a gallery of colorful figures…distinctively pleasurable.” —Publishers Weekly “For a lively trip into the…world of jazz musicians, and murder, there’s no better guide than Bill Moody.” —Tony Hillerman, author of the Leaphorn and Chee mysteries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before movie stars Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger became governors of California, a popular radio personality with no previous political experience—who wasn't even registered to vote—swept into the governor's office of Texas. W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel was a 1930s businessman who discovered the power of radio to sell flour. His musical shows with the Light Crust Doughboys (which launched the career of Bob Wills) and his radio homilies extolling family and Christian values found a vast, enthusiastic audience in Depression-era Texas. When Pappy decided to run for governor in 1938 as a way to sell more flour—a fact he proudly proclaimed throughout the campaign—the people of Texas voted for him in record numbers. And despite the ineptitude for politics he displayed once in office, Texans returned him to the governorship in 1940 and then elected him to the U.S. Senate in 1941 in a special election in which he defeated Lyndon Johnson, as well as to a full term as senator in 1942. While the hit film O Brother, Where Art Thou? celebrated a fictional "Please Pass the Biscuits, Pappy" O'Daniel, this book captures the essence of the real man through photographs taken by employees of the Texas Department of Public Safety, most of which are previously unpublished. Reminiscent of the work of WPA photographers such as Russell Lee and Dorothea Lange, these photos record the last unscripted era of politics when a charismatic candidate could still address a crowd from an unpainted front porch or a mobile bandstand in the back of a truck. They strikingly confirm that Pappy O'Daniel's ability to connect with people was as great in person as on the radio. To set the photos in context, Bill Crawford has written an entertaining text that discusses the political landscape in Texas and the United States in the 1930s, as well as the rise of radio as mass medium for advertising and entertainment. He also provides extensive captions for each picture. John Anderson, Photo Archivist of the Texas State Archives, discusses the work of Joel Tisdale and the other DPS photographers who left this extraordinary record of the greatest vote-getter in Texas history, who became one of America's first celebrities to cross the line from entertainment to political office.

Book excerpt: The groundbreaking, bestselling history of slavery, with a new foreword by Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed With the publication of the 1619 Project and the national reckoning over racial inequality, the story of slavery has gripped America’s imagination—and conscience—once again. No group of people better understood the power of slavery’s legacies than the last generation of American people who had lived as slaves. Little-known before the first publication of Remembering Slavery over two decades ago, their memories were recorded on paper, and in some cases on primitive recording devices, by WPA workers in the 1930s. A major publishing event, Remembering Slavery captured these extraordinary voices in a single volume for the first time, presenting them as an unprecedented, first-person history of slavery in America. Remembering Slavery received the kind of commercial attention seldom accorded projects of this nature—nationwide reviews as well as extensive coverage on prime-time television, including Good Morning America, Nightline, CBS Sunday Morning, and CNN. Reviewers called the book “chilling . . . [and] riveting” (Publishers Weekly) and “something, truly, truly new” (The Village Voice). With a new foreword by Pulitzer Prize–winning scholar Annette Gordon-Reed, this new edition of Remembering Slavery is an essential text for anyone seeking to understand one of the most basic and essential chapters in our collective history.
