Book excerpt: Computer simulation experiments are essential to modern scientific discovery, whether that be in physics, chemistry, biology, epidemiology, ecology, engineering, etc. Surrogates are meta-models of computer simulations, used to solve mathematical models that are too intricate to be worked by hand. Gaussian process (GP) regression is a supremely flexible tool for the analysis of computer simulation experiments. This book presents an applied introduction to GP regression for modelling and optimization of computer simulation experiments. Features: • Emphasis on methods, applications, and reproducibility. • R code is integrated throughout for application of the methods. • Includes more than 200 full colour figures. • Includes many exercises to supplement understanding, with separate solutions available from the author. • Supported by a website with full code available to reproduce all methods and examples. The book is primarily designed as a textbook for postgraduate students studying GP regression from mathematics, statistics, computer science, and engineering. Given the breadth of examples, it could also be used by researchers from these fields, as well as from economics, life science, social science, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first, America has considered itself a “shining city on a hill”—uniquely lighting the right way for the world. But it is hard to reconcile this picture, the very image of American exceptionalism, with what America’s Use of Terror shows us: that the United States has frequently resorted to acts of terror to solve its most challenging problems. Any “war on terror,” Stephen Huggins suggests, will fail unless we take a long, hard look at ourselves—and it is this discerning, informed perspective that his book provides. Terrorism, as Huggins defines it, is an act of violence against noncombatants intended to change their political will or support. The United States government adds a qualifier to this definition: only if the instigator is a “subnational group.” On the contrary, Huggins tells us, terrorism is indeed used by the state—a politically organized body of people occupying a definite territory—in this case, the government of the United States, as well as by such predecessors as the Continental Congress and early European colonists in America. In this light, America’s Use of Terror re-examines key historical moments and processes, many of them events praised in American history but actually acts of terror directed at noncombatants. The targeting of women and children in Native American villages, for instance, was a use of terror, as were the means used to sustain slavery and then to further subjugate freed slaves under Jim Crow laws and practices. The placing of Philippine peasants in concentration camps during the Philippine-American War; the firebombing of families in Dresden and Tokyo; the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki—all are last resort measures to conclude wars, and these too are among the instances of American terrorism that Huggins explores. Terrorism, in short, is not only terrorism when they do it to us, as many Americans like to think. And only when we recognize this, and thus the dissonance between the ideal and the real America, will we be able to truly understand and confront modern terrorism.

Book excerpt: Gary Lee Downey investigates the body/machine interface in his remarkable ethnography of computer engineers. Drawing on interviews, observations and personal interaction with engineers, he documents the everyday power of technology's dominant image in our society, a force widely regarded as monolithically progressive. The Machine in Me will lead the reader to understand how deeply connected we are to The Machine and how beneficial it would be for us to really understand ourselves and machines as partially configured of the other--we as part machine, machines as part human. In this way, we can begin to see both the power and limitations of technology.

Book excerpt: Intrigued by the mystique and challenge of the Marine Corps, eighteen-year-old Wesley Fox enlisted in the summer of 1950, shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. He saw action with the First Marine Division in Korea and was wounded in 1951. After Korea, Fox advanced steadily in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of first sergeant, and, early in the Vietnam War, he received an appointment as second lieutenant. While serving as a rifle company commander with the Third Marine Division in 1969, he was twice wounded in a vicious battle during Operation Dewey Canyon. Early in this battle, every member of the company s command staff was either wounded or killed. In an all-or-nothing effort led by First Lieutenant Fox, his company repulsed the attack of a much larger enemy force and then counterattacked with devastating results. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Fox received the Medal of Honor, which President Richard Nixon presented to him at the White House. Despite the personal sacrifice and frequent danger, Fox resolutely embraced the ethos of the Marine Corps, risking his life on numerous occasions and emerging as a leader in one of the most respected and feared fighting organizations in the world. Readers interested in U.S. military history from the second half of the twentieth century, in the Marine Corps, and in inspiring tales of personal achievement will find plenty of each in Fox s extraordinary memoir."

Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry • Finalist for the PEN Open Book Award • Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize Carmen Giménez Smith dares to demand renewal for a world made unrecognizable Be Recorder offers readers a blazing way forward into an as yet unmade world. The many times and tongues in these poems investigate the precariousness of personhood in lines that excoriate and sanctify. Carmen Giménez Smith turns the increasingly pressing urge to cry out into a dream of rebellion—against compromise, against inertia, against self-delusion, and against the ways the media dream up our complacency in an America that depends on it. This reckoning with self and nation demonstrates that who and where we are is as conditional as the fact of our compliance: “Miss America from sea to shining sea / the huddled masses have a question / there is one of you and all of us.” Be Recorder is unrepentant and unstoppable, and affirms Giménez Smith as one of the most vital and vivacious poets of our time.

Jamie and Alex were sure everything was over when they finally got Markie back. The only thing that could make up for the nightmare of a missing child was having him returned to them. But it seems as if the nightmare is only beginning when Jamie discovers the kidnapper was her own mother. The knowledge comes with questions, and with grief. A grief Alex doesn't help by maintaining an "I told you so" attitude that sets Jamie's teeth on edge. Not only that, but Alex is also dead-set against apologizing to Christine for accusing her of being the kidnapper both to her face and to her husband. Paul, one of Alex's most trusted partners, quit Reid Enterprises as a result. All Jamie wants is for Alex to own up to his mistakes. After all, in the light of their son going missing, everyone was emotional, and it could easily have been a slip in a moment of frustration. But Alex won't give, and it's driving them apart. Not to mention that Christine isn't talking to Jamie, and she is struggling to come to terms with her mother's reason for being behind bars. Will Jamie and Alex be able to get past the biggest stumbling block they've ever come across in their marriage? Or will the weight of the recent past finally break them? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the thirty papers delivered at the International Archaeological Conference in Athens, 10-13 May 2005. These papers are selected essays from the conference which was organised within the framework of the project Crossings: Movements of People and Movement of Cultures - Changes in the Mediterranean from Ancient to Modern Times , a project that had been initiated by the Pierides Foundation. All contributors to this volume discuss various issues of Mediterranean archaeology along two broad thematic sessions: The first one was devoted to recent advances in theory and in fieldwork that had significantly contributed to our understanding of key themes in Mediterranean archaeology. Scholars contributed papers related to issues such as the movement of people and the circulation of objects and ideas throughout the Mediterranean during prehistory and history. Specific areas of interest covered cultural diffusion and indigenous development, local identity and regional processes, population movement, object biographies, trade and gift exchange, islandscapes vs. landscapes, travel and transport technologies, and colonisation. The second general theme broadened the conference discussion through an interdisciplinary debate concerning the sociopolitical implications of the 'postmodern' agenda in the present and the impact of this agenda on the study of the Mediterranean past. The sessions related to this theme addressed contemporary concerns with the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean as a source of social identities and common heritage. Issues concerning the use (and abuse) of the Mediterranean past and identity in the present, the politics of the Mediterranean past, and perceptions of how the region's heritage is or should be perceived were central to this section. The subject matter of the volume covers long time span from the Neolithic to contemporary times. The volume embraces the Eastern, Central and Western basins of the Mediterranean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume proposes key contributions addressing the connections between two important themes: dialogue and representation. These connections were approached or interpreted in three possible ways: 1. Dialogue as representation, 2. Normative perspectives on dialogue/representation issues, and 3. Representations of dialogue. The first interpretation -- Dialogue as representation -- consists of exploring dialogue as an activity where many things, beings or voices can be made present, whether we think in terms of ideologies, cultures, situations, collectives, roles, etc. The second interpretation – Normative perspectives on dialogue/representation issues – leads scholars to explore questions of normativity, which are often associated with the notion of dialogue, when conceived as a morally stronger form of conversation. Finally, the third interpretation – Representations of dialogue – invites us to address methodological questions related to the representation of this type of conversation. Echoing Bakhtin, contributors were invited to explore the polyphonic, heteroglot, or dialogic character of any text, discourse or interaction.
