Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes called "puff adders," eastern hognose snakes are thick-bodied snakes that reach about 46 in (115 cm) long. These snakes are easily distinguished by their upturned snouts, but they are variable in color. The eastern hognose has a background color that can be yellow, gray, brown, green or black, often patterned with large, rectangular spots down the middle of the back that may resemble eyespots. The scales of this snake are keeled and the underside of the tail is usually lighter than the rest of the venter. The females of this species have a tail that has a fine taper to the end of the tail, while the males have a slight bulge near the cloaca and the tail then tapers off drastically. When confronted, the hognose snake will suck in air; spread the skin around its head and neck (like a cobra), hiss, and lunge pretending to strike. Eventually, they will even play dead, rolling on their back and opening their mouth. Often, these displays alone are enough to identify this species. Despite this fairly convincing show, hognose snakes almost never bite. This beginners guide provides vital information on the origin, physical attributes, how to buy, temperament, health problems, feeding, and socialization of this wonderful petsGet your copy today by scrolling up and clicking Buy Now to get your copy today

While general society may expect this sort of snake to be a rattler, their normal distinction lies in their noses. The males are littler in contrast with the females. Their typical length, including the tail, is 15-20 inches (38-51cm).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Hognose Snake, or Heterodon nasicus as it is formally known, is a harmless snake native to North America. The name of these snakes comes from the way their snouts are turned up. Tan, gray, and reddish-brown Western Hognose Snakes are common, and they typically have dark spots or patterns. Their bodies are usually keeled and their scales are flattened. Adults of this species of snake typically measure between 14 and 24 inches (35 and 61 cm) in length. Grasslands, deserts, and scrublands are common habitats for these snakes because they are ground dwellers. When threatened, Western Hognose Snakes are recognized for their distinctive bluffing, hissing, and "playing dead" actions. They pose no threat to human safety since they prefer to avoid conflict rather than act aggressively. Toads, frogs, tiny reptiles, and even rodents are common fare for Western Hognose Snakes, which are opportunistic feeders. They have rear fangs and weak venom, which is mostly utilized to immobilize their victim. Due to their small size and unique characteristics, these snakes are a common choice for pet ownership. Prospective owners, however, should do their homework, since these creatures have very particular food and environmental requirements. There are several more species of Hognose snakes in North America besides the Western Hognose Snake, and each has its own set of distinguishing features and habits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautiful to behold and extremely sensitive to its environment, the snake is nonetheless stigmatized as a serpent, a creature that almost universally inspires fear. At a time when so many animals are endangered, who will speak up for the snake? Snake populations are declining precipitously around the globe, but calls for their conservation are muted by fear and prejudice. Saving Snakes offers a new approach to understanding snakes and preserving their populations—an approach built on respect. Nicolette Cagle has traveled the world in search of snakes, from the Midwest and the southeastern United States to Cuba, Nicaragua, and Australia, and spent decades conducting natural science research on the patterns of snakes in regions where urban development encroaches upon the natural world. Her book offers a firsthand account of the strange and secretive lives of snakes, and reveals their devastating losses. Beautifully and accessibly written, Saving Snakes entwines Cagle’s personal narrative with deep scientific and historical research. Through the author’s exploration of her evolution as a field naturalist, it provides a blueprint for developing a conservation consciousness among young people and paves the way for increased inclusivity in the male-dominated field of herpetology. While fundamentally a book about snakes, this is also the story of one woman's pursuit of her passion as she searches for, studies, and advocates for these enigmatic creatures.
