Book Synopsis Remembering Musical Childhoods in Vietnam by : Tina A. Huynh
Download or read book Remembering Musical Childhoods in Vietnam written by Tina A. Huynh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth exploration of the childhood musical experiences of Vietnamese elders, providing a unique lens on the intersections between identity, culture, and music education. Centering the stories of five Vietnamese Americans and one Vietnamese person who grew up in Vietnam between 1931 and 1975, the author considers the role that each individual’s childhood musical experiences played in their life as they were impacted by war, political movements, and immigrant and refugee experiences. The book adds a new perspective to research on the global music practices of children by exploring music transmission and repertoire in Vietnam in the context of political unrest and colonialism before and during the Vietnam War. It also explores the evolution of the personal meanings and memories of music over a period of drastic change in each individual’s life, as five of six elders transitioned into a life in the United States. This book provides both an act of cultural and musical preservation, and relevant implications for music education today. Situating the children’s songs and games of Vietnamese culture in their original context, the author invites those in the field of music education to consider how lived experiences and entrenched systems of teaching affect music learning and identity formation. The volume includes a selection of Vietnamese children’s songs, games, chants, and musicopoetic lullabies (ca dao), offering ways to enrich music educators’ world music curricula. Relevant to music education, ethnomusicology, and Asian American studies, this book provides a nuanced account of Vietnamese children’s music making of the past and presents an analysis of childhood musical experiences in a wider cultural, sociopolitical, and historical context.
Book Synopsis The Vietnam War from the Other Side by : Cheng Guan Ang
Download or read book The Vietnam War from the Other Side written by Cheng Guan Ang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing studies of the Vietnam War have been written mostly from an American perspective, using western sources, and viewing the conflict through western eyes. This book, based on extensive original research, including Vietnamese, Chinese and former Soviet sources, presents a history of the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese communists. It charts relations with Moscow and Beijing, showing how the involvement of the two major communist powers changed over time, and how the Vietnamese, despite their huge dependence on the Chinese and the Soviets, were most definitely in charge of their own decision making. Overall, it provides an important corrective to the many one-sided studies of the war, and presents a very interesting new perspective.

Book Synopsis Southern Medicine for Southern People by : Laurence Monnais
Download or read book Southern Medicine for Southern People written by Laurence Monnais and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a national medicine? What does it mean for a medicine to be traditional and scientific at the same time? How could a specifically Vietnamese medicine emerge out of the medical practices and treatments that have flourished and waned during key socio-cultural encounters in Vietnam? This book answers these questions by examining the making of Vietnamese medicine from a historical and contemporary perspective. Ever since its fourteenth century emergence out of the traditions and practices of the much more globally celebrated Chinese medicine, Vietnamese medicine has been engaged in a constant effort to define, guard and more recently, revive itself. In this collection of empirically-rich chapters, international scholars specialising in history, sociology, anthropology and medicine show how this process has played out through very much ongoing North-South and West-East encounters. Vietnamese medicine is practiced, produced and consumed in contexts of medical pluralism and globalisation, not only within Vietnam, but increasingly also among the Vietnamese diaspora around the world. Its development and modernisation cannot be detached from Vietnam’s tumultuous and tragic quest for independence. The compass points that saturate every chapter in this volume suggest that the making of Vietnamese medicine has been as much related to post-colonial national identity formation as it has to national efforts to address the health problems of the Vietnamese people.
