Book excerpt: "Demystifying Hmong Shamanism" is the first book to provide a comprehensive discussion of shamanism as practiced and experienced by Hmong Americans. A broad range of case examples are discussed that not only represent the initiation and maintenance of the shaman's practice, but also a variety of ceremonies performed to promote spiritual health and well-being across the life span. Case examples are described in rich detail and presented within a real-life context. Shamanism as practiced in the United States remains consistent with that practiced in their homeland of Laos, with minor adaptations as described throughout the text. The book is unique in that it addresses a traditional form of shamanism that continues to be practiced widely within Hmong American communities across the United States. "Demystifying Hmong Shamanism" provides a comprehensive exploration of the practice and use of shamanism by Hmong Americans that incorporates a first-hand perspective from recipients, family members, shamans, and the shaman assistants. "Demystifying Hmong Shamanism" is the result of over ten years of research and close collaboration with Hmong shamans and other members of the Hmong American community. As practicing Hmong shamans advance in age, they have identified the importance of documenting their legacy for future generations. Their cooperation and collaboration with Dr. Gerdner has provided a unique opportunity for the documentation and recording of ceremonies normally restricted to family members. The shamanic ceremonies and practices reported here reflect the diversity with regard to purpose and performance found within the Hmong shamanic world. Recorded and presented for the first time, "Demystifying Hmong Shamanism" is a landmark publication in the field of Hmong and Hmong American studies, shamanism, and religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s, a radio program with a compelling spiritual message was accidentally received by listeners in Vietnam’s remote northern highlands. The Protestant evangelical communication had been created in the Hmong language by the Far East Broadcasting Company specifically for war refugees in Laos. The Vietnamese Hmong related the content to their traditional expectation of salvation by a Hmong messiah-king who would lead them out of subjugation, and they appropriated the evangelical message for themselves. Today, the New Way (Kev Cai Tshiab) has some three hundred thousand followers in Vietnam. Tam T. T. Ngo reveals the complex politics of religion and ethnic relations in contemporary Vietnam and illuminates the dynamic interplay between local and global forces, socialist and postsocialist state building, cold war and post–cold war antagonisms, Hmong transnationalism, and U.S.-led evangelical expansionism.

Book excerpt: Hmong are a group of people who are recorded to have been living in China since 3,000 BC. History indicates that Hmong fought many wars with the Chinese to resist assimilation, as well as to repel oppression. Many were forced to migrate out of China to neighboring Southeast Asian countries during the middle of the eighteenth century due to political oppression, later on settling in Western countries such as the United States. For thousands of years, Hmong animism was the only religion they believed and practiced. However, by the grace of God, a large number of Hmong have turned to Christ. The book, Hmong Animism: A Christian Perspective offers a comparative religious study on the two belief systems. It explains Hmong animists belief in reincarnation, shamanism, and the worship of ancestors, household demons and wild demons in comparison to Hmong Christians beliefs in God and the Savior Jesus Christ."

Exploring the resiliency of tradition amid shaky US commitments to pluralism and secularism, Melissa May Borja shows how Hmong Americans developed a “new way” that blended Christianity with their longstanding practices.

Book excerpt: This first ethnography of the Hmong in China is based on Nicholas Tapp’s extensive fieldwork in a Hmong village in Sichuan. Basing his analysis on the concepts of context and agency, Tapp discusses the “paradoxical ambivalence at the heart of Hmong culture.” A paradox arises in the historical and ethnographic construction of the identity of the Hmong by conscious contrast with, and in opposition to, a majority Han Chinese identity at the same time that large parts of Hmong culture are shared with the Chinese and may be the results of historical processes of adoption, absorption, mimesis, or emulation. Tapp examines the Hmong rituals of shamanism, ancestral respect, and death and provides details on livelihood, kinship, local organization, and intellectual culture. The book is enhanced with thorough accounts of ceremonies, rituals, and folktales, with translations of Hmong songs and stories. This publication has also been published in paperback (no longer available).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research project is on the Hmong religion. Hmong people believe in a faith called "Animism – the way of the spirit," which is a created religion that they practiced and passed down from generation to generation. The Hmong like to live in the past and do not want to change their customs, traditions, and cultural practices that their ancestors practiced for centuries. They put all their hope in their dead ancestors' spirits to guide them until a new religion appeared to them, and it is called "the Christian faith." The Christian faith brings new hope to the Hmong people, and it also created divisions and limitations to the Hmong Christians, their families, friends, and relatives. The family would reject those who convert for choosing another religion over the one they worship, and there are some Hmong Christians who still practice the animistic faith to please their family. They would say that it is their custom and tradition, and their way to honor their family. The researcher must survey by interviewing participants who were once an animistic believer and now a Christian why they still hold on to something that cannot give them hope and believe in a faith that is not alive. Christians must present the Gospel effectively to the Hmong people so that they can become a follower of Christ. They must worship only one God and not two to have eternal life because Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." (John 14:6).

Friends and family share their memories of Daniels growing up in Montana, cheating death in Laos, and carousing in the bars and brothels of Thailand. First-person accounts from Americans and Hmong, ranchers and refugees, State Department officials and smokejumpers capture both human and historical stories about the life of this dedicated and irreverent individual and offer speculation on the unsettling circumstances of his death. Equally important, Hog's Exit is the first complete account in English to document the drama and beauty of the Hmong funeral process."--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: From “an exceptional storyteller,” Somewhere in the Unknown World is a collection of powerful stories of refugees who have found new lives in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, told by the award-winning author of The Latehomecomer and The Song Poet. All over this country, there are refugees. But beyond the headlines, few know who they are, how they live, or what they have lost. Although Minnesota is not known for its diversity, the state has welcomed more refugees per capita than any other, from Syria to Bosnia, Thailand to Liberia. Now, with nativism on the rise, Kao Kalia Yang—herself a Hmong refugee—has gathered stories of the stateless who today call the Twin Cities home. Here are people who found the strength and courage to rebuild after leaving all they hold dear. Awo and her mother, who escaped from Somalia, reunite with her father on the phone every Saturday, across the span of continents and decades. Tommy, born in Minneapolis to refugees from Cambodia, cannot escape the war that his parents carry inside. As Afghani flees the reach of the Taliban, he seeks at every stop what he calls a certificate of his humanity. Mr. Truong brings pho from Vietnam to Frogtown in St. Paul, reviving a crumbling block as well as his own family. In Yang’s exquisite, necessary telling, these fourteen stories for refugee journeys restore history and humanity to America's strangers and redeem its long tradition of welcome.

A gripping story from the perspective of Tran Fang, an 11-year-old Christian of the Hmong tribe in North Vietnam. Tran lives in constant fear of losing her father, a leader who dares to stand for Christ and take the gospel to nearby villages. As the government of Vietnam conducts more intense persecution on the believers, her family's turn is unavoidable. Tran keeps praying and asks God to release her relatives in prison and to protect her family from the cruelty of the Communist Regime. The book reveals courage and fellowship that surpass any tragedy, and most importantly, faith that helps the Hmong Christians stay strong until the end.
