Book excerpt: Children who choose to leave home as a result of hunger, poverty, conflict, or simply to seek adventure, often travel alone. Crossing the border into strange countries, which for them hold great promise, the find their hopes battered when bandits steal their possessions or abuse them. They are often arrested by authorities, have their few possessions confiscated, and find themselves vulnerable to sexual and verbal abuse. Published with Save the Children, the book is based on interviews with children, some as young as twelve years old: Why did they leave home? How did they cross borders with no documentation? What hazards did they face en route, and at their destinations? Although their chronicles of theft, violence, sexual abuse and workplace exploitation can seem relentless, and often end in arrest and deportation, they are at the same time life-affirming and filled with hope.

Book excerpt: The National Household HIV Prevalence and Risk Survey of South African Children forms part of the Nelson Mandela/HSRC Study of HIV/AIDS: South African National HIV Prevalence, Behavioural Risks and Mass Media Household Survey 2002. This report provides information on HIV prevalence, orphanhood, risk factors for HIV infection and knowledge of HIV/AIDS among South African children. A total of 3 988 children aged 2 to 18 years participated in the survey. Caregivers of 2 138 children 2 to 11 years of of age answered a questionnaire on the child's behalf. A total of 740 children 12 to 14 years of age directly answered a separate questionnaire. An additional 1 110 children and between 15 and 18 years of age answered a youth questionnaire. Of the 3 988 children, 3 294 (82.6 per cent) provided a saliva specimen for HIV testing. The results show HIV prevalence among children 2 to 18 years of age to be 5.4 per cent. Prevalence was nearly constant across age groups and did not vary significantly. There were insufficient numbers to compare prevalence across race groups. The prevalence was higher than expected. Further studies are necessary to verify this finding.

Book excerpt: In 2002, the Human Sciences Research Council was commissioned by the WK Kellogg Foundation to develop and implement a five-year intervention project focusing on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in southern Africa. In collaboration with several partner organizations, the project currently focuses on how children, families and communities in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe are coping with the impact of HIV/AIDS. The aim of the project is to develop models of best practise so as to enhance and improve support structures for OVC in the southern African region as a whole. This report forms part of a series that examines the work undertaken as part of the Kellogg OVC Intervention Project from 2002 to 2005.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of apartheid, there have been major increases in migration flows within, to and from the Southern African region. Cross-border movements are at an all-time high across the region and internal migration is at record levels. The implications of greater mobility for areas of origin and destination have not been systematically explored. Migration is most often seen as a negative phenomenon, a result of increased poverty and the failure of development. More recently, the positive relationship between migration and development has been emphasised by agencies such as the Global Commission on International Migration, the Global Forum on Migration and Development, the United Nations Development Programme and the African Union. The chapters in this publication are all based on primary research and examine various facets of the relationship between migration, poverty and development, including issues that are often ignored in the migration-development debate like migration and food security and migration and vulnerability to HIV. The book argues that the development and poverty reduction potential of migration is being hindered by national policies that fail to recognise and build on the positive aspects and potential of migration. As a result, as these studies show, migrants are often pushed to the margins where they are forced to "survive on the move". Their treatment violates labour laws and basic human rights and compromises the potential of migration as a means to create sustainable livelihoods, reduce poverty and food insecurity, mitigate the brain drain and promote the productive use of remittances. This book shows that migrant lives and livelihoods should be at the centre of international and African debates about migration, poverty and development.

Book excerpt: The problem of children left orphaned and vulnerable by HIV/AIDS is receiving increasing attention worldwide. Yet, even as the global community acknowledges the human tragedy that orphaning on the scale heralded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic represents, it is widely speculated that large numbers of orphans may themselves represent a security challenge. By reducing the resources available to children and destabilising the institutions on which they depend - such as the family, school and community - it is argued that HIV/AIDS may severely affect children's development, creating generations of disenfranchised and potentially dysfunctional young people left with little alternative but engage in criminal and other threatening activities.
