History after Apartheid analyzes how, in the midst of the momentous shift to an inclusive democracy, South Africa’s visual and material culture represented the past while at the same time contributing to the process of social transformation. Considering attempts to invent and recover historical icons and narratives, art historian Annie E. Coombes examines how strategies for embodying different models of historical knowledge and experience are negotiated in public culture—in monuments, museums, and contemporary fine art. History after Apartheid explores the dilemmas posed by a wide range of visual and material culture including key South African heritage sites. How prominent should Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress be in the museum at the infamous political prison on Robben Island? How should the postapartheid government deal with the Voortrekker Monument mythologizing the Boer Trek of 1838? Coombes highlights the contradictory investment in these sites among competing constituencies and the tensions involved in the rush to produce new histories for the “new” South Africa. She reveals how artists and museum officials struggled to adequately represent painful and difficult histories ignored or disavowed under apartheid, including slavery, homelessness, and the attempted destruction of KhoiSan hunter-gatherers. Describing how contemporary South African artists address historical memory and the ambiguities uncovered by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Coombes illuminates a body of work dedicated to the struggle to simultaneously remember the past and move forward into the future.

By looking at the South African situation through the lens of trauma, they make clear how the psychic deformations and injuries left behind by racism and colonialism cannot be mended by material reparation or by simply reversing economic and political power-structures. Western trauma theories – as developed by scholars such as Caruth, van der Kolk, Herman and others – are insufficient for analysing the more complex situation in a postcolony such as South Africa. This is because Western trauma concepts focus on the individual traumatized by a single identifiable event that causes PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). What we need is an understanding of trauma that sees it not only as a result of an identifiable event but also as the consequence of an historical condition – in the case of South Africa, that of colonialism, and, more specifically, of apartheid. For most black and coloured South Africans, the structural violence of apartheid’s laws were the existential condition under which they had to exist. The living conditions in the townships, pass laws, relocation, and racial segregation affected great parts of the South African population and were responsible for the collective traumatization of several generations. This trauma, however, is not an unclaimed (and unclaimable) experience. Postcolonial thinkers who have been reflecting on the experience of violence and trauma in a colonial context, writing from within a Fanonian tradition, have, on the contrary, believed in the importance of reclaiming the past and of transcending mechanisms of victimization and resentment, so typical of traumatized consciousnesses. Narration and the novel have a decisive role to play here.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines images of racialized and gendered violence in post-apartheid South African fiction, and attempts to locate such images within the socio-political and historical contexts that condition contemporary South African society. I begin with an investigation of the manner in which the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, intended to facilitate South Africa's transition from apartheid to a representative democracy, is both a direct descendent of the truth commissions of colonial jurisprudence, and a rupture of such laws, meant to instantiate a new model of interpersonal relations as the basis for a new South Africa. I argue that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's proceedings represent an attempt to contravene racist and sexist violence by elaborating a model of interpersonal relations no longer predicated on domination, but characterized by openness and reciprocity. I further comment on the hindrance posed by regressive modes of governance, neoliberal models of social engineering, and economic inequality to the actualization of a post-apartheid dispensation. Following Mark Sanders' assertion that the work of the TRC and that of the post-apartheid novelist are structurally and thematically similar, the remainder of this dissertation investigates literary avenues that might allow South Africa to move beyond violence toward reciprocity and the affirmation of otherness. Central to my analysis are J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace and Zo± Wicomb's David's Story, both of which wrestle with the problems inherent in producing images of acts of violence inflicted on racialized, gendered bodies, challenging simplistic accounts of race, gender, and the intersection of the two in their representations of gendered violence. Disgrace juxtaposes a white man's rape of a coloured woman, the gang rape of a white woman by a group of black men, and the white protagonist's metaphorical rape of his daughter; while David's Story deals with rape, torture, and sexual violence perpetrated within the liberation forces of the African National Congress. From these readings, I propose an ethics of representation of sexual violence that calls upon writers to bear witness to the ongoing brutality, while simultaneously protecting the victims against objectification and preserving their agency. In my final chapter, I examine the politicization of sexuality, in particular gendered sexuality, in post-apartheid South Africa. The chapter engages two works of feminist erotica, a controversial genre of writing now flourishing in South Africa, in order to investigate the potential of women's pornography to serve as a site of women's subversive and empowering intervention within patriarchal discourse argue that (white) male-driven pornography appropriates women's sexuality within narratives that pose the racialized and gendered body as a site of vulnerability in need of male protection and subservient to male desire, and I claim that feminist erotica affords women opportunities for the reclamation, edification, and expression of their sexual agency that can contravene misogynistic narratives.
