Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Worcester Society of Antiquity, Vol. 2 In publishing this First Book of the Records of Worcester, it has been my endeavor to present in print a faithful transcript of the written volume, preserving the orthography, and so far as was possible, the other peculiarities of the original. The following pages comprise all the matter in the manuscript excepting the warrants, the majority of which contain nothing of importance not repeated in substance in the proceedings of the meetings, and the printing of them would have largely increased the size and expense of the work. They were carefully scanned, however, and extracts embodying articles of which no record of action appears, curious passages, or other matter of interest, are frequently given in the text or in foot-notes. A few brief notes of explanation have been added, but the limits of the work and the peculiar circumstances attending its production, precluded much elaboration in this respect. The proofs have in all cases been compared with the original, and it is thought that few errors will be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester, and Its People, Vol. 1 Splendidly equipped in the local historical and gene alogical fields, Mr. Nutt methodized his work with wisest judgment, and prosecuted it with remarkable enthusiasm and industry. The results are presented in the following pages, which from first to last are his own work, with the slight exception of a very few of the biographical sketches. The illustrations were also of his providing, and he had seen much of the matter in page form before Death so unexpectedly called him away. The publishers had maintained business relations with Mr. Nutt for many years, and their regret in parting with him is most sincere. To their editor, his passing away comes as a personal loss, through their long association, which, beginning in a business way, deepened into a feeling of personal attachment. The gifted author, - skilled as antiquarian, genealogist and historian, - in this work has left his final tribute to the people of the famous city in Which he took a wholesome pride, and to whose traditions, history and destiny he was intensely loyal. The publishers. Publishers' note - Volumes I and II, Historical, are paged continuously; Index at end of Volume II. Volumes III and IV, Biographical, paged continuously; Index at end of Volume IV. To index all the thousands of names in these volumes, would be impossible. In addition to the names in Vols. III and IV, all indexed, the reader will readily find almost any other for which he would search, by turning to the chapter relating to Edu cation, Churches, the Professions, or Manufacturers, or Mercantile Business. In Chap ter VI, pp. 44-272, Early Settlers, will be found a great mass of genealogical material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings From the Sources of the History of the Second Parish, Worcester, Massachusetts The religious society which is known as The Second Parish in the town of Worcester, originated in a voluntary association of sixty-seven persons, formed in March, 1785. The first meeting of the society for public worship was held on the third Sunday of this month, and it was incorporated by an act of the General Court, passed November 13, 1787. The history Of this organization has been written several times, but there are a few incidents connected with its formation and early history which deserve further consideration. These I propose to write about briefly in this paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Green was that of Mrs. Levi Heywood, at W'orcester; later he was taught by the late Mrs. Sarah B. Wood, then passing to the public grammar school under the charge of Mr. Caleb B. Metcalf. Going next to the high school, where he graduated in 1854, he entered Harvard College. Among his classmates there were two other graduates of the Worcester High School - Eugene Frederick Bliss, for most of his life a citizen of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Lieutenant Thomas Jefferson Spurr, who was mortally wounded at the battle of Antietam. Mr. Green graduated from Harvard College in 1858. In the early part of the summer of 1859 he sailed from Boston for Smyrna, and before returning home in the same vessel visited Constantinople. Remaining two years in Worcester on account of ill-health, he resumed his studies at Harvard University in the autumn of 1861, and graduated from the Divinity School in 1864. He visited Europe again in 1877, 1902, 1904 and 1906, and added in 1905 to extensive travels previously made in this country, a visit to Alaska. During the Civil W'ar and while in the Divinity School, Mr. Green was drafted for service in the army, but was debarred from entering it by delicate health. He took the degree of Master of Arts at Harvard University in 1870, and June 28, 1877 was chosen an honorary member of the Phi Beta Kappa society by the chapter of the order connected with the same university. In 1864 Mr. Green became bookkeeper in the Mechanics' National Bank of Worcester, and later was teller in the Worcester National Bank. Which latter position he held for several years. He was offered the position of cashier of the Citizens' National Bank, to succeed the late Mr. John C. Ripley, but declined it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester, Massachusetts It is true that local self-government, in a modified form, had been known both in Germany and England before the earliest colonization of America. But long before that colonization commenced the Crown had, by repeated encroachments, deprived the people of their ancient right of self-control, and that right or power had been vested in municipal councils or other local boards, and which were self-perpetuating bodies.3 But when removed from the presence of that domi nating power of the few over the many, the colonists at once returned to what has been called the natural order of society in the establishment of government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worcester Book: A Dairy of Noteworthy Events of Noteworthy Events in Worcester, Massachusetts, From 1657 to 1883 In the preparation of this volume my purpose has been to provide a Reference Book of Dates for Worcester events, which would readily afford often desired information as to the exact time of any noteworthy local occurrence. With this end in view, a large number of items have been gathered, including not only the more important matters which are familiar in print, but also many of a kind not usually noticed in town histories. Among the latter may be mentioned the visits of literary, theatrical and musical celebrities; political conventions, meetings and disturbances; exhibitions, fairs, lectures and entertainments; riots, accidents and calamities; natural phenomena; and many things uncommon and singular. Notes, explanatory, historical, biographical or anecdotal, have been added; and a complete index will be found at the end. In the compilation of the matter I have drawn freely from the many printed works relating to the history of Worcester, both general and special; from the files of the Worcester papers, (which I have been kindly allowed to consult at my convenience at the library of the American Antiquarian Society); from the publications of The Worcester Society of Antiquity, which have supplied many original items; and from other sources too numerous to mention. I am also indebted to many persons for facts and statements included in the book, some of which appear in print for the first time.
