Field, of Waterbury, who had been secretary and treasurer since the company began business, was elected president; Mr. Hotchkiss becoming vice president and E. W. Rutherford secretary. The company's plant on Brown Street has been greatly extended, additions having been made nearly every year of its existence. In 1900 the central threestory building, 86 by 97, was erected, and in 1908 the large addition, 66 by 82, and the brick boiler house were added. In 1909 the wing, 73 by 107, was added. Hotchkiss, who was its president for so many years, has been closely identified with the United States Rubber Company as a director and was on its executive committee for the first seven years of its existence. THE PLATT BROTHERS & COMPANY Among the long-established manufacturing enterprises of Waterbury is that of the Platt Brothers & Company, which, was incorporated in 1876, but was founded on the first of April, 1847. Even before that date the business had its inception, having been established by Alfred Platt, grandfather of Lewis A. Platt, who is now president of the concern. It continued the manufacture of buttons until 1910, when that branch of the business was taken over by a newly organized company under the name of the Patent Button Company, capital $48,000, of which Lewis A. Platt, however, remains the treasurer. The original firm of A. Platt & Co. was afterward reorganized under the name of A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing incisive commentary on the historical and contemporary American working class experience, Banded Together: Economic Democratization in the Brass Valley documents a community's efforts to rebuild and revitalize itself in the aftermath of deindustrialization. Through powerful oral histories and other primary sources, Jeremy Brecher tells the story of a group of average Americans--factory workers, housewives, parishioners, and organizers--who tried to create a democratic alternative to the economic powerlessness caused by the closing of factories in the Connecticut Naugatuck Valley region during the 1970s and 1980s. This volume focuses on grassroots organization, democratically controlled enterprises, and supportive public policies, providing examples from the Naugatuck Valley Project community-alliance that remain relevant to the economic problems of today and tomorrow. Drawing on more than a hundred interviews with Project leaders, staff, and other knowledgeable members of the local community, Brecher illustrates how the Naugatuck Valley Project served as a vehicle for community members to establish greater control over their economic lives.

Book excerpt: The hard work of nineteenth-century Irish immigrants in Waterbury helped place the city on the map as the Brass Capital of the World. In the early years of immigration, the Irish still had a hard road before them, filled with prejudice and social exclusion. Irish Catholics would hold Mass in secret, but eventually beautiful churches were built, attracting the most revered clergy in Connecticut. Soon Irish and Irish Americans established themselves as city leaders and professionals in the community. Dr. Charles A. Monagan was a founding member of St. Mary's Hospital, while his son John later became mayor. Some achieved fame through their excellence in sports, such as Roger Connor, whose long-standing record for career home runs was unbeatable until finally broken by the one and only Babe Ruth. Detailed research and oral histories from living descendants bring to light the remarkable Waterbury Irish legacy.

Book excerpt: For too many years American workers have been cut off from their own roots. When children go to school, they learn little about the people who work in factories and offices, their movements and their efforts for a better life. What is hidden from them is their own legacy, the heritage of culture and struggle handed on from other generations of working people. This book represents a new approach to history. It attempts to pass on that history from one group of workers to other workers, especially as workers and unions are at a crossroads, facing deteriorating conditions and even the permanent loss of jobs. But workers have faced these problems before, and surmounted them. This book can help all understand that our collective history helps us to face the challenges of the present and ones yet unknown of tomorrow. -- Publisher description.
